    anyone heard of this med before?

    Hi ~
    Saw my "pain specialist" today and he prescribed a new med called EMBEDA.
    I noticed when dropping off the Rx that it contains naltrexone. It is a brand new medication according to the doc and even the pharmacy has to order it.
    Wondered if anyone hear takes it or has heard of it or knows anything about it.......
    I'm always worried about taking "new" meds before they see possible adverse reactions in thousands of people........remember Celebrex 10 yrs ago? I ended up having a heart catheterization because they couldn't figure out why my heart was racing at 120 bpm!!

    Hi Franz,

    Have you been treated with opiods long-term? I don't think an opioid agonist would typically be prescribed for pain treatment unless you were already opioid tolerant; that would be dangerous. It's not really a "new" drug, just a combination of two "old" ones, morphine and naltrexone. I'm assuming your doctor knows your drug history, so I would just say be really, really sure to use it as directed. I'd be very nervous using a narcotic with a history of addiction, but I'm not living with pain, either.

    You absolutely cannot safely drink with it, so I guess that's a good thing!

      "Embeda is a very strong pain medication developed by Alpharma Pharmaceuticals. The active ingredients are morphine sulfate and naltrexone hydrochloride; morphine being the agonist and naltrexone being the antagonist. It is a schedule 2 controlled substance, intended for long-term pain caused by malignancy or where lower tiers of the pain management ladder have already been exhausted, and where medications such as OxyContin would otherwise be indicated.[1]
      Embeda is formulated with morphine pellets and has an inner core containing Naltrexone. The purpose of this formulation is to prevent people from crushing the tablet for intranasal administration or from injecting themselves. If it is crushed, the Naltrexone would mix with the morphine and Naltrexone would competitively antagonize the effects of morphine in the body. The inner core containing Naltrexone is specifically formulated so that if ingested orally, the core encapsulating the Naltrexone would not be digested by the GI tract."

      So it's straight morphine essentially. If you crush it to snort it or inject it it won't work well or at all. But for your purposes it is morphine.

        I googled it but didn't read the wikipedia results. So essentially the Nal has no effect?
        Is that what I'm understanding? Crap!

          anyone heard of this med before?

          are you alcohol dependent and wanting to try nal for this? If so talk to your doc about it. You may not be able to take the nal if you need narcotics for pain relief at the pain relief would not work well. You might, however, be a candidate for baclofen.
