I drank in that same way for about 37 years. Noone except my husband knew I had a problem. And he only knew after about 15 years of marriage! It wasn't until my mid 50s that I started drinking more consistently and Always to excess. I presume that since you are on this site alcohol is giving you some type of trouble. I don't think it really matters what you call it.

I, too, went long periods between binges which became more and more frequent until almost daily. I always felt while abstinent that I would eventually "blow" it. I knew from my very first drink that I was at high risk for alcohol dependence and fought it for a long time. Bac has helped me change the very nature of my relationship with alcohol. I no longer fear it. I no longer crave it. I am comfortably abstinent and "moving on". My only reason for staying on these boards is to encourage others.

After a binge you try really hard to just stop and then the abstinence is too much so you go back to it after feeling awful for about as long as you can stand it.
In a way, I suppose someone who binges and stops shows more determination than someone who does not stop at all. Or maybe they feel "guilt" at having drunk so much.BACLOFENISTA

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Guilt was huge for me and always lurking.
It is the phenomenon of "reversal of intent" that essentially defines addiction. It means that we intend to stop but keep using. That is our "better/smarter" brain knows we are getting in trouble, but our primitive brain wants what it wants and wants it "NOW".
We need to use all the tools. Will power plus meds if will power isn't enough.
Good Luck. I have learned so much on this forum.
