    On campral still drinking

I was first prescribed campral 18 months ago and did get 6 months sober although 3 months was spent in a treatment centre. Whe I was taking the campral and not in treatment i did notice it was doing me good and i was not craving but then my 12 months on it was up and i panicked and drank again. My chemist has now started getting it for me again but I dont seem to be able to get more that 4 or 5 days without a drink altough my drinking is not as chaotic and harmful to my family i now seem to be able to drink about 30 units a day and am not getting pissed. the not getting pissed thing is obviously good but im worried about the 30 units or more a day on my body, i used to drink more than this tho in vodka but now its in beer i will get back on here in one week and tell you whats happening then

    Hi spacebebe,

Great to hear you had some time AF on Campral. I'd recommend reading up on the other meds (Topamax, Baclofen, Naltrexone) to see if you'd like to try one of those instead, or in addition to the Campral.

I was on Campral, and eventually switched over to Baclofen exclusively since Campral didn't really seem to work for me. I experienced nearly immediate results on Baclofen. Campral was US$50/month for me, so saving a little helped me out, too.

I tried Campral several times over the years, once or twice after a period of residential treatment too. It didn't stop me relapsing, partly I believe because I wasn't prepared to make the changes in myself in order to stop drinking - even though I kept swearing I wanted to stop.

In the end after trying most things apart from Bac I did manage to stop with nothing more than L-Glut and a very changed mindset.

      So don't despair.

I've found L-glutamine to be as effective as naltrexone. I found Campral to be completely ineffective. With L-glut you have to get up around 6-8 grams/day. Even up to 10. I've never noticed any side effects and its a lot cheaper than any of the other craving drugs(nal, campral, bac).

I used to be on Campral as well, but it wasn't that effective for me. I finally ended up going on Antabuse, and that's how I got sober. If you are considering Antabuse, I would recommend being fully informed about it. Good luck to you!

I found Campral to be mildly effective but not enough to keep me sober or take away the majority of cravings, although my urge to drink has usually been due to strong depression, so my case could be different to others. Antabuse ended up being something that worked for me but only once I had found enough determination to get sober. Finding that determination is something that is extremely hard to explain to anyone else, since I was not able to find it for many years. Low-dose baclofen has helped me with anxiety and possibly depression while sober. I cannot recommend my other "method" of staying sober since it is marijuana-smoking and that has had a lot of unwelcome side effects for me. Good luck!

If you drink on Campral it will be a waste of money. I know that sounds stupid but it's supposed to completely negate their effect. ?60 isn't much as I'm sure you spend far more than that on alcohol.

People knock the NHS in our country, and complain a lot about paying for prescriptions, but they only cost about ?7 (is that about $10?) for 1 month.
