    Topamax and dry cough

    Hi All,

I have just reached 300 mg of Topamax and it is working great for me. I got past all of the weird tingling and dizzy side effects and desire for alcohol is completely disappeared. But, I have a constant taste of metal in my mouth, constant dry mouth, and now I have developed a persistent dry cough. The dry cough worries me. I have been to a doctor once, got medicine, but the cough continued. Had to go back. I have had the cough for about a week. Anyone else experience this? Is this a side effect of Topamax (some Internet research suggests that it could be). Does it go away after time like the other side effects. I hope I can overcome this because this has been a wonder drug for me! Any input would be appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Topamax and dry cough

Hi Buddhasmyl - I didn't have anything like that. I got up to the 300mg of Topa as well and also had the tingling but didn't have the dry mouth or the cough. I am not sure what to suggest. If it might be one of the SE and you say research on the internet says it might be, is it bad enough for you to maybe titrate down a little and see if you can reach a point where you don't have the cough but still don't have the cravings? I decided that as I was doing really well, I didn't need the Topa any more (fool that I was) and titrated right down to nothing - and yep - started drinking again. Right now I am titrating back up again - am up to 200mg now and am hoping and praying it will kick in soon. Maybe start going down slowly and see if you can reach a happy medium? Just a thought.....let me know how it goes. Good luck,

    hugs, Sunshinedaisies xx

      Topamax and dry cough

Well done Budd on becoming AL free and Excellent advice SD,

Its interesting that you came off SD, you had spoken about the fact that you were thinking about it.

When you came off, did you notice any difference in how you felt mentally, I mean in regards to Topa side effects ie, did you find that your memory imporoved when you where off Topa, and did you find an improvement in mood?? I noticed when I was on it a definate drop in mood despite being on AD's.

      Just wondering and pondering.......

      Regards Indy

        Topamax and dry cough

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I think I will decrease the dosage a bit and see if that improves the cough. I might just be at too high of a dose for my body. I will just have to see. Thanks for the input!!

          Topamax and dry cough

Hi Indi - to be honest, after I came off it, in fact as I came off it, I broke my foot, and was feeling pretty down, and then started drinking so have no idea how my mood was! Once I started drinking I felt great! LOL Everything was back to normal - I felt totally fine - exactly how I felt before I stopped. So in answer to your question, I have no idea if it was the Topa. I see my doc in September and am going to chat with him about it - I am back up to 200mg again and am waiting for the Topa to kick back in again but feel great still. I am thinking maybe a change of AD might be in order. How are you doing??? Let me know eh?

          hugs to you, Sun xx

            Topamax and dry cough

I haven't tried Topa but my blood pressure meds made me cough. Doc changed me to another drug and my cough is gone.

              Topamax and dry cough

              Hi All,

I just found out that I caught H1N1. That is probably what is causing my dry cough, not the Topamax. False alarm. :-) Thanks for the input anyway.
