Anyone using/used beta blockers to calm anxiety?
Reading a lot about this 'performer's drug' that takes away pounding heart/anxiety due to 'fight or flight' circumstances. Lowers cortisol. If anyone has any laying around...I'm in California. Also interested because they are surprisingly cheap. Would like to get completely off benzos; even though I'm on a very low dose. It seems the night time anxiety that caused me to drink is cortisol- the 'stress hormone.' Why only at night I don't know. I had my hormones tested and my cortisol skyrockets at night, hence the desire to quell the feeling. But the benzos seem like over-kill, as I don't need to turn my mind off, just this pounding heart.

Have you tried anything not on prescription such as GABA or Vitamin B3 Niacin? I take both of these supplements and find them both very calming..........worth a try...hope this helpfulI am a part of the family of humanity. Not one person on this earth is a stranger to me. Rev. Ted Noffs

have you asked your doctor to give this to you on a trial basis? If you have tachycardia and anxiety at night you might ask him to Rx you for a month to see if it helps.
I take melatonin sometimes at night but I don't suffer anxiety or rapid heart.

Anxiety
Hi
I have sent you a PM.
I have a prescription for Baclofen for anxiety. It works very well.
Try about 30 mg a day. That should be enough.BACLOFENISTA

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Thanks!
I do love valerian and it works to some degree, I did get a 'script for Baclofen and it did in small doses calm me. I just can't afford it. The blockers are about 3.00$ US for 20@25mg, which you split in half, from the online pharmacies, prices vary of course.

inderal or propranolol is exactly what you need.
I would think propranolol is what you need. I take klonopin usually daily for anxiety, 300mg topamax, and 40mg propranolol for the pounding heart, granted I drank liquor like a madman before calming down this year. the proranolol helps tremendously with calming the body, it has even been studied to do a full blown hospital detox vs. benzos, of course didn't work like benzos but it does work for detoxification in high doses but is dangerous, people have died trying to detox on propranolol. My combo of klonopin and 40mg propranolol calms me like no other, most addiction psychiatrists are up to date on this drug, in fact, this is the preferred doping drug for shooting in the olympics to steady your hands, another reason I take it (my hands still tremble)

YES!! I spoke to my doctor about the possiblity of using a beta blocker for physical anxiety (not the mental part) I was experiencing, and he agreed to let me try a beta blocker to see if it would help. I was in an extremely hostile work environment, and even though I wasn't physically in danger, my body was responding to the situation as if I were-- heart racing/pounding, stomach dropping feeling, nausea, sweating-- basically a physiological fear response which made it really hard to focus at work. I also had a prescription for Ativan, which is a benzo, but didn't want to have to take it during the day because it made me loopy. The beta blocker worked! And it's not habit forming. Just don't mix with alcohol AT ALL.

There are different kinds of beta blockers. I take 25 mg of atenolol per day to prevent supraventricular tachycardia (not anxiety related). It is cheap medicine. I haven't noticed a reduction in anxiety, or any side effects at all, so it's probably not the beta blocker you are after.* * *

Beta blocker Inderal (generic is propranolol) has saved my life. I suffered from severe anxiety, alcoholism and insomnia for many years. I was perscribed almost every SSRI that exists amd every benzo that I know about. Nothing has done even close for me what this has, not even alcohol. It is a miracle for me. I take 10 mg twice a day- works like a charm. It is very long lasting. Seems like I'm taking a very low dose compared to what I have seen others mention they take though... I will stick to what I am doing; It is WORKING!!!

I take 20 mg propranolol when I have to do any public speaking/singing. It works well for me; takes the edge of the anxiety. I never tried it for sleep, but benadryl (diphenhydramine), an antihistamine, helps me with that. I'll be curious to see if the BBs helps you at night, please let us know!AF since July 15, 2010. :applouse:

Thank you all!!
I got my Inderal from India (River Pharmacy) and they really do help me. I'm giving them out to friends who are in various states of anxiety and they all claim it has worked well. I do not take them every night....but it's at night when the nervousness begins. Why not mix w/ alcohol? I researched extensively and see no warnings.
