The first clinical trial of high dose of baclofen for treatment of alcohol dependence has been published in a medical journal (Ameisen O / R. de Baurepaire, Annales medico-psychological, January 2010). This test, which focused on 60 patients for whom conventional treatments had failed, demonstrating that high-dose baclofen suppresses alcohol dependence and consumption in 88% of these patients. The removal of alcohol dependence was described for the first time in the medical literature in 2004 by Prof. Ameisen that, based on animal models of addiction withdrawal, had managed to completely remove his own addiction to alcohol, self-administering high dose of baclofen. Since then the elimination of alcohol dependence using high-dose baclofen, has been reproduced and published in the medical literature and in hundreds of patients in Europe and the United States. As in animals, baclofen is, in humans, the only drug for which the complete elimination of the pathological desire to consume alcohol is established. Other drugs, naltrexone (naltrexone) and its derivative nalmefene (Revex), acamprosate (acamprosate, Campral), topiramate (Epitomax) etc ... only reduce the urge. The link to the medical article is:

The results show that after three months of treatment, 88% of patients had completely stopped or significantly reduced their alcohol intake, and most of them have become indifferent to alcohol without effort. The doses of baclofen were required vary from one patient to another, ranging from 15mg/day to 300mg/day, with an average of 145mg/day. Approximately two thirds of patients required a dose greater than that permitted 80mg / d.

This is exciting news. I hope this means more people who need higher doses in the US will begin to be able to get them through their docs rather than .com pharmacies off shore. Of course I also hope this means more doctors will become educated about Bac as a treatment option.

Fantastic Ottor have been adviced by a health care professional to get some evidence and approach my gp in England to prescribe baclofen for me ( I need a minatanice dose of 75/100mg daily) you just provided me with just what I need to show my doctor ! Do you think we are finally getting there ?

I'm so very happy to see this result.

Now... I wonder how long it will take for this to become a mainstream treatment? I look forward to the day when courts, families and rehabs offer a Baclofen regimen as the most effective solution.

This is great news, which should encourage more doctors to prescribe effective doses (i.e. beyond the current daily dose "limit" of 80 mg). Now if only a controlled-release form of baclofen could become available to overcome any problems caused by its very short half life!

What I'm wondering is, why is this just coming out now, if the study was done in January?

Could it be related to the study being published in French? You would expect it to have been translated somewhere, seeing as French is not currently the most spoken language in the world, nor the standard for medical documentation (I think).

Could there be other reasons it has not been widely circulated, especially to addiction specialists?

Seems once again the veil of silence over al adicction decends. I really dont think the main body of medical specialists want to acknowledge that al addiction can be controlled by medication. Much easier to shake heads and point fingers at the poor hapless drunks who lack self control and will power ( are they the same thing ?). If this was a trail for any other kind of illness it would be headline ground breaking news !

Hi Beatle,

This is typical. The peer review process for academic journals is glacially slow at times, sometimes due to a manuscript sitting on a reviewer's desk for a long time prior to review. Corrections and revisions also take time since they have to circulate back and forth.
