Here is a poem my mother kept next to her bed when I was a child:

    Abou Ben Adhem

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:?
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the Presence in the room he said
"What writest thou?"?The vision raised its head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord,
Answered "The names of those who love the Lord."
"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"
Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerly still, and said "I pray thee, then,
Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night
It came again with a great wakening light,
And showed the names whom love of God had blessed,
And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

That's lovely, Otter. I've been thinking about you and yours. I hope all is improving? Hang in there.

        Still alive!

        Hi

Thanks all for your kind thoughts.

Well, the good news is that the Baclofen is working its wonders. One thing that really helped was a bit of counselling from Dr. Phill. I think he did as much as the Baclofen. 20 mg in the morning and at bed time and 10 mg every couple of hours, no cravings. He is No. 1 in my book!

I have been spending some time on a web site for a new venture to take my mind off all this,;I did not jump off a cliff, or join a monastic order.

I don't want to tempt fate but things seem in many ways to have turned a corner.

We both wish everyone here all the best and we will keep up our posts over the months/years to come and will carry on our own battle against this awful affliction.

Read the poem again, this time with the concentration your thoughts deserve. Nice sentiment.

            How's it all going?

Who are you admonishing, Ig? Is that #1 to #2?

I'm glad it's going well, Otter. Remarkably grateful for that, in fact.

              Thanks for checking in.

I wasn't admonishing any one and my post wasn't sarcastic.

Sometimes I just read the last post when I log on. Again haste to catch up, if I had looked more carefully I would have noticed Otter's folow up optimistic post. So good to hear its going well.
