Any stories of longer-time Baclofen users?

Hi all of you, I've been reading all the posts for a few weeks now. Thank you for that. By suggestion of my Psychiatrist I am trying Baclofen for a few weeks now and he gave me Ameisen's book . It's the opposite of what you are going through to get your doctors to prescribe Bac to you (I'm from the Netherlands).

I've been reading many threads and that convinced me to start this therapy. What I miss in the threads is stories of how people are doing when using long-term Baclofen. So, if anyone would like to respond to that, it would be very helpfull to me.

Yes, we are all on the "bleeding edge" of this new medical development! But at least we know baclofen is not a new drug, it has been around for decades and prescribed in high dosages for innumerable patients (but not for alcoholism of course).

So, we don't know what our long-term prognosis is in terms of being AL-free, but we all know what our long-term prognosis is if we continue as alcoholics (as I recall, we have 3 choices: jail, mental institution, or death).

Low, I am amazed that your psych actually gave you Dr. A's book to read! I discussed BAC with not only my primary care dr. but two diff psychs (I fired the first one because he wouldn't even bother to read the book, the second said he read it but never would prescribe), so I had to order online. Take that gift and run with it!

If you find any stories, let me know. I've also been looking, asking, to no avail.

Great shrink you've got! Love to hear his reasoning.

            Me, me, me!

            And welcome!

              Everybody,

Thanks for your replies and the welcoming.

Sunnyvalenting: these are exactly the kind of stories I'd love to read From mid-january to the end of oktober is 9 months! Must feel like heaven.. I'd also like to read less succesfull experiences with Bac.

Ignominous: End of 2009, My shrink prescribed me Refusal and Lexapro (an anti-depr) wich worked pretty well a few months. Mostly because the Refusal scared the ... out of me. But then I overcame that fear and started drinking while on Refusal even if I got sick. I can tell you: not recommendable. I quit both medications. So my Shrink reasoned like this: "it's a safe product and it seems to be working on rats, so read the book and give it a try if you feel like it. " He is prescribing it to more of his clients now. His clients mostly are pretty succesfull, higher educated people that function in normal life pretty well and don't feel like going to AA-meetings.

I myself titrated up to 160 mg a day (4x40). I titrated up pretty fast since at lower doses there were no negative SE's at all. I did not reach the almost mythical 'Switch' yet but the SE of feeling pretty comfortable is very, very clear to me. I get a warm good feeling all over my body each time the dose kicks in, after two hours. A strange feeling, but it pleasantly surprises me everytime again. A few years ago, I used to recreatively do partydrugs like extacy, cocaine and I find it a bit similar to extacy, but more controlled and less psychedelic. Taking a dose about 2 hours before bedtime, makes me lay down with no worries and a warm tinteling body. It's so relaxing that I almost long to my bed and sleep. I used to have a sleeping problem and took sleeping pills, but I can do without now. So for right now, the Bac is doing a great job in replacing the anti-depr and sleeping pills. I recognized these SE's at a dose of about 100-120 mg a day. The craving is still there though, so I'll have to titrate up more, which is fine with me. It's still great to feel that it does 'something' to my brains, so I have faith in the healing effects when using lager doses.

                Hiya, Low

I've been on baclofen since July 2009. I have been sober for over 14 motnhs now, and doing brilliantly on a fairly low dose of 80mg a day from a switch dose of 270mg.

Low, is "Refusal" the same as Antabuse (disulfiram)?

It's great to hear that the side effects are positive.

Very good question - they must be out there somewhere. Quite a few folks hit the switch before me. Anyone still in contact with the likes of Bill P?

Getting your W's mixed up? :H

                          This guy: https://www.mywayout.org/community/members/bill-p-.html

Knows a lot about bac (or at least did at the time) but unfortunately deleted most of his posts in a temper tantrum (nothing new on MWO, of course!).

That is when Lo0p came to the rescue and created the Consolidated Info thread, if memory serves (not that my memory is what it used to be. It must be a long-term SE of bac )

Hi all not been on for ages. I have been on bac since Aug 2009 just after tip. I have modded on it but all went a bit wrong when i messed the dose up and got a bit complacemtn about it all , I am now bacl on track but I am finding that I cant tollerate the bac as well as i did first time around and feel unwell alot of the time. I think maybe I should try being af on the bac.

And is Bill P really dead ?

                              Thx for all the replies.

Brave Hearted: thanks for taking your time to share this.

I've been to my shrink this morning (it's 10.52 here. I returned Ameisen's book and he prescribed me 120 pieces of 25 mg Bac to make it to the switch. He warned me about the possibility of epilectic attacks. He asked me how I would know when/if I reached the switch. I told him all about the stories I read on this website. I find it very helpfull and I love to here more stories about longer-term use. All the experiences of the SE's I've read here scares the .. out of me sometimes and I find confidence in the fact that untill now everybody seems to be able to write down his story afterwards.

So, this site is very educational for me, but also for my shrink (since there are not that many sources that he can scientifically rely on).

Another SE: after I saw my shrink I visited a friend and she told me I looked pretty dazed when she looked into my eyes. It made her laugh because I was smiling all the time.

So, any (un)succesfull experiences of longer-term Bac-use could be very helpfull.

                              Thx again!
