    Dr. Oliver Amesien

hi, all. the article in Science in July 2009 is something about rats and opiates, maybe? It's all greek to me, but I've signed up for the free trial and if someone wants my username and password for it, and they can maybe shed some light on why Dr. Levin recommended it, I'd be happy to help.
Not to hijack further, Dab. Love your threads...
    hugs.

      Goes to show...

I'm really embarrassed. For weeks, since reading his book, I have been totally misspelling Dr. "Olivier Ameisen's" first and last name. I'm university educated and a writer as well. Goes to show how 30 years of alcohol inevitably takes its toll. Would that I could, and hopefully will be soon, FREE. :upset:

It is very fortunate that Dr Ameisen took it upon himself to go so far outside the normally-accepted daily dose range with baclofen. It wouldn't have been very obvious to anyone to try huge baclofen doses for alcoholism, not even those in the field of addiction. Given that baclofen had been around for many decades but never used in this way, its effects in alcoholism (beyond some low-dose studies done in Italy) may never have been discovered!

The lack of use of baclofen in other addictions may also be due to nobody actually having tried high-enough doses. There may also be other drugs, possibly ones similar to baclofen, that are able to help alcoholism and other addictions when used in very high doses. Dr Ameisen himself has expressed an interest in GHB for this purpose, although in that case high doses would not be used due to GHB's strong central nervous system depressant effects.

Dabs, I get the worry over the misspelling. It's the kind of thing I'd obsess about for weeks, maybe longer. I'm here to tell you, though, that it doesn't matter. Start a new one and we'll let this one go, if you want.
That said, I emailed Dr. Ameisen last week. Shockingly, amazingly, outrageously, I got an email in return from him. I haven?t heard from him that I can share his thoughts here, and so I?ve hesitated to write about it. There wasn?t anything revelatory, so no worries. It amuses me that I asked him in a follow up email if I could share his thoughts? As though he can?t do it for himself or he needs a mouth piece here. And even worse, I intimated in the post that he clearly read that he may have been drinking. Ha! Talk about embarrassing.

That said, I feel it?s very significant that he replied. And that he?s here with us, paying attention, just in case we get way off track.

          xo, peeps. KOKO lol
