    Side effects of Campral

    Hello,
I have been prescribed Campral but hesitate to start taking it as I have been told it may impair my ability to drive. Is this the case? How would I drive myself to and from work for example? I would like to hear how others manage this issue?
    Thanx
Don't tell me it can't be done until I'm finished doing it.

    Side effects of Campral

I didn't have any side effects from either naltrexone, or campral. however, I do generally tolerate medications very well. the worst part about campral, is how much of it you have to take during the day.

Campral should not affect your driving ability, it is not a sedative.

If in doubt read the leaflet for side effects and contraindications. I'm going to check my old box now but I'm pretty sure you've just heard a myth. Some people think all meds make you drowsy, a little like it's a misconception that antibiotics react with alcohol. It's only one particular antibiotic which has an adverse reaction, the others just simply don't work whilst you are drinking!

Right got the medication leaflet here for Campral. It clearly says "Campral doesn't make you sleepy and therefore it is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines". That's straight from the leaflet.

Perhaps your informants are thinking of librium which is prescribed to assist with withdrawls, and does definitely affect your driving.

        Side effects of Campral

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it and feel grateful to have found this site.
I have now taken my first lot of Campral this morning and feel quite disorientated and spaced out. So far today I have locked my keys in the car twice, written on envelopes upside down and forgotten people names. I don't feel like a drink though so for that reason, I'll press on and see if the side effects abate with time. I have started the medication now at a time when I have no immediate obligations for several weeks so really hope that I am not feeling as vague by the time I have to go back to work.
P.S I hope all this makes sense as I Do feel like a bit of a space cadet today.

Campral SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS EFFECT on you and the symptoms you describe are NOT KNOWN SIDE EFFECTS - it is not a sedative and does not work in such a way that should alter the way you operate. Is there anything else you are taking? Are you sure it's Campral because the sides you report are very much like Librium.

I have taken Campral on several occasions and never felt spaced at all.

If you are experiencing such symptoms you should really consult your Doctor as it could be something else effecting you(illness or otherwise).

                Side effects of Campral

I just started taking Campral today. I have definitely been spaced out. I have gone on-line and read about it and dizziness is a possible side effect.
Campral can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Take Campral for the full prescribed length of time, even if you relapse and drink alcohol. While you are taking Campral, tell your doctor about any alcoholic drinks you consume, no matter how many.
Just wondering if it passed in a few days?
I am thinking that I'm going to have to wait & start it on the weekend when I don't have to function at work or DRIVE! It was scary driving this morning - trying to remind myself to concentrate.
I'm not giving up on it - just thinking that I need a couple of days of not having to drive/think while I get used to it.

Campral doesn't cause those sides,if you are experiencing them it's either a change in feeling through being sober or something else.

                  Check with your DR.

                    Side effects of Campral

I took Campral, at a dose of 2000 mg (6 333-mg tablets per day), and did not feel any strong sedative effect. It is not supposed to be a sedating drug, as others have pointed out. I was attending a counselling clinic when I took Campral and I must say that I do recall one guy saying he experienced quite strong effects from it. I was skeptical at the time but he insisted it was creating a "hangover"-like state, at a time when he wasn't drinking. It does affect GABA and glutamate receptors in the brain from memory so I suppose it could theoretically cause effects on the central nervous system, although it is apparently not absorbed very well and takes a week or so to reach a steady level. If there are effects like this straight away then I don't know whether they would get stronger or weaker over time but it would be something to talk to your doctor about, especially if it keeps going.

                      Side effects of Campral

Thank you both for taking the time to answer. I went on several sites and those side effects were listed on all of them. I think that I am going to be able to get thru them but it was definitely there.
It's not a change in feeling through being sober. I was on antabuse for a couple of months and never experienced that feeling. But, both times that I took the Campral today, I had about 1-1/2 to 2 hours of feeling spaced. I am going to give it a try again when I am not going to have to work or drive for a couple of days. Hopefully, this weekend. I think that I'll adjust to this right away. But, I did skip the evening dose because of driving tonight.
Thanks for the help everyone. I am certainly going to give this a try.

I took Campral for almost 2 years (full dosage one year, half the second). It did make me tired at the end of the day, but not spacey. If you can hang in there for a year, you will repair at lot of the connections in the brain that have been messed up.

For me it was worth the short term issues to know that I am in better shape for the rest of my life. Hang in there. Knowing that YOU have decided that you will never drink again and that YOU are in control is a GREAT feeling!
