Hi, everyone. I was prescribed Baclofen by my MD shrink / psychopharmacologist in the Bay Area, California. I was trying Naxeltrone / TSM, and she had suggested in the spring that I try Baclofen. That went over my head, until a year on TSM had passed without much effect on my drinking. I then finally clued in and she also wanted me to go to 250 mg. Can't post her name / tel. no. -- but PM me and I can try to get you a referral. She would want to see you in person on a sustained basis, and as she's in the Bay Area, she ain't cheap. But she's worth it!

This is one of the most important threads on this forum since there are 2000 hits to this site every day. It should be kept at the top so people begin to see how this is spreading. I think the Toronto clinic is important because there are some major teaching hospitals there and treatment is covered by free Medicare. I agree about the importance of this thread!!

It is very heartening to see so many doctors getting on board with Baclofen as a treatment for alcoholism.

While it wasn't my magic pill, I get thrilled every time I see a member here hit the switch and get their lives back.

Baclofen has a much higher rate of success than anything else I have seen.

Yes, it is strange though that at the same time an article appears in McLeans saying that most doctors don't prescribe because it is still off label. If most doctors know about its effects, most doctors would be legally and ethically bound to prescribe because the side effects do not outweigh the benefits for alcoholism, as opposed to, say, spasm for which it is prescribable.

It just goes to show how sloppy journalism has become that they just throw comments like that in to make a bit of filler for their article. How irresponsible. It is like saying that if large doses of aspirin were found to cure cancer that most doctors would not use it because its side effects outweigh its benefits for tooth ache. A good investigative journalist would have checked with professional bodies and found that it is for the doctor to work with his client to decide whether a particular medicine is beneficial and safe to prescribe off label and if it is, then they would be negligent not to prescribe and if they just refused then they would be in breach of their professional duties to their client.

If you went to a doctor and told him about Baclofen and he did his research, where would it say that the side effects for alcoholism are worse than alcoholism itself? Nowhere! Are most doctors really that stupid? The great thing is that the top people in alcoholism are now using Baclofen so a doctor who is not so specialized would have to defer to their greater experience and prescribe so it is a good idea if you have trouble getting your doctor to prescribe to have them contact someone like Jonathan Chick or the Toronto clinic to get advice and make them prescribe.

It seems to me that general doctors would be uncomfortable prescribing it. They don't have enough experience with substance abuse.
Considering so little is avaialable on label to treat it and the lack of financial incentives to get there, an addiction specialist should be considering these options for sure, in my opinion.
