    Does anyone still take Campral?

    howdy all,
with all this incredible news about bac, i'm wondering if i should bother w the campral i have already. took it once for a few months but it only somewhat seemed to help. i'm now 7 days af and would rather go the bac route, based on what i'm reading here.

please share any experiences with campral. has anyone tried both and can speak on that? also, i asked in another thread, do i need a prescription for bac? how do i get some?
    thanks!

Funny thing is they were prescriped together and after reading around here Naltroxene works if you are drinking and Campral only works if you are not drinking....I was drinking but they still did not do anything!

              Does anyone still take Campral?

I take Campral and it definitely has helped me with the anxiety that is a common PAWS symptom. Plus Campral helps rewire the brain back to the pre-addictive state, according to information that I have read on the National Institutes of Health website. I don't have much as far as cravings, but I attribute that more to the amino acid, vitamin and supplement regime that I am also taking.

I took Campral a number of years ago during a period of abstinence. It did seem to help somewhat with cravings and mental stability in the absence of alcohol, but I recall reading somewhere that it doesn't help much at all if a person still drinks. I made a stupid decision to stop taking it, probably out of complacency (as it wasn't causing any bad side effects), and I relapsed. I kept a diary at the time and I did seem to get more irritable and unstable when I stopped taking it, then seemed to feel more stable when I went back to it for a while....I mean "stable" to include a much reduced desire to get drunk in order to blot out unpleasant emotions. I did not encounter anything as strong as the baclofen switch that people talk about here however. I was taking 2 grams Campral per day (666 mg three times a day) with a body weight of around 80 kg so I think large people may find it less effective than I did if the effects depend on dose per body weight.

                    Does anyone still take Campral?

                    Hello Rudy,

I had a Campral prescription about a year ago and took it for a month or so. It upset my stomach and I found I could not quit drinking so i stopped it after reading that Campral can cause liver damage, especially if you drink and take it. I didn't notice it helped much at that time.

More recently here I've tried baclofen. I've been a bit of a dummy with stuffing up my dosages and that hasn't been that great either... but plenty of other positive stuff to read on that elsewhere.

Personally, Baclofen was good for my anxiety but it did not stop the cravings. I did not get to a veryeally high dose, only around 180 but I hate the SE's so thought it's not for me. I titrated down then rediscovered my Campral at xmas when I decided 2011 will be my AF year.

This time I started on Campral again and kept taking Bac at a low dose (around 80-120mg taken in a couple of doses around witching hour). I found the Bac was good for my anxieity (I always freak out when I get home from work - am single mother of 3 tweens & teens and this is the time of the day I get overwhelmed with anxiety & feel I can't cope so out comes the wine). And the Campral was good for suppressing cravings. It was working well, I've had some good AF stretches. But I've gone splat again because I forgot to take bac and got anxious again etc. I really need to be more careful!!

So! I think Campral can be good but only if you can get AF. I find it's still really annoying that my tummy is upset all of the time. I thought it's worth it while I am AF and have no cravings but if I forget bac and get anxiety then I'm stupid and drink. Then Campral's no help. If you can be AF I think Campral works a treat against cravings. So I guess it's all about WHY you drink.

Bac is helpful but you have to titrate up slowly and carefully... never run out! https://www.mywayout.org/community/f2...ons-47330.html

I'm now realising I need to stay at my current bac dose and probably go up a bit higher. Once I'm AF again I think the Campral is helpful to keep me there as it takes a while to reach a high enough dose of Bac to achieve the 'switch' people talk about where you don't crave AL.

Anyway, just my two cents worth. Hope that was some help!

                      Does anyone still take Campral?

I have been taking Campral for about week now and it works very well. Of course its not a magic bullet. You have to be serious about giving up alcohol for it to work at its best. It alleviates much of my desire to have a drink, but I still think about it on occasion, nothing like before though.

An earlier post mentioned that it causes liver damage, which is not true. It is well tolerated with very few side effects. Over 1.5 million have been taking this drug since 1989 and it is proven. It works for the majority of people who take it but not everyone. In my opinion if you are a "real" alcoholic it may not work very well for you. I was drinking about 2 liters of whiskey a week which is quite a bit, but not compared to others that I know.

I was a daily drinker for over 10 years and have been to 4 rehabs and AA. I just started taking Campral today and have completely lost the desire to drink. I can't explain why or how, I just simply don't crave or even want a drink. I finally feel like I can actually live without obsessing over drinking. I highly recommend this to anyone who is struggling with alcohol.
