    What to do with a sinus headache without benedryl? On BAC?

    I woke with a sinus headache this AM, and planning to head off any infection with the Neti, but in the meantime my head is about to explode. I know it's not just a bac headache because I own enough mucus to fill Asia. (sorry for the visual). It woke me up last night several times, clogging my breathing, suffocating me. What a wake up! Agggg.

    Bac is contra indicated in conjunction with benedryl, I believe NE said this. I am hypertensive so cannot take any of the stuff OTC that has epinephrine type drugs.

    What can I take for my sinus headache? Any ideas?

    In the meantime, I will use my Neti Pot and nasal spray ....

    Fletch, I can't find anything on epocrates about diphenhydramine, but I didn't look very carefully. I know I asked the good doc about it in one of our consults, because benadryl is my go to drug and I was very congested. He said, NO! Ibuprofen is okay, though, from all I can tell. (not a doc, medic or in the know, ftr. But I know I've made that obvious!)
    One of the common reactions listed on epocrates.com is nasal congestion. Mine moved into my chest and I'm still coughing up phlegm, though it's gotten better.
    I'm nervous enough about this that I've resisted taking anything that might interfere with the bac, other than the obvious , so I've stuck to the steroidal nasal spray (Dr. L said it was okay), the neti-pot and hot showers. Of course, the fact that I smoke doesn't help. But I know that's not a factor for you. (lucky girl.)

    It seems as though a lot of what's contra-indicated has to do with cns/respiratory relaxation. Including a lot of herbal remedies, ftr.

      So weird, that this could be a SE? I'm not sure I like the fact that my breathing passages are all compromised on bac. Snot and muscles that relax and cause sleep apnea, together it's quite a lot to handle. Can't breath through your nose, nor your mouth. I've had alot of sleeplessness because of this already.

      So does pretty much everyone get this and like you, it stays and stays? Throughout the road to the switch and back? You've been on bac for couple of months, right? Have you had this for a couple of months then?

        Don't worry Fletch, it doesn't stay!! Mine was annoying for a few weeks, but it did go away, even as I continued to titrate up. Hot steamy showers in the morning helped a lot to clear me up for the day. I tried my neti pot too, but sometimes it couldn't even get through my clogged up nasal passages. I wish there was an answer for getting to sleep at night, but without being able to take Benadryl, I didn't find anything that helped. Luckily it didn't prevent me from falling into a coma as soon as I laid down every night, but it did wake me up on occasion when it felt like I couldn't breathe sometimes. That was scary. But I reminded myself that nobody has ever died from taking baclofen. I was very glad when that SE went away.

        Switched at 180mgs of Baclofen on 1/31/11, and again on 10/8/11 at 200mgs.

            I've been wondering how these side effects all happen, just what the bac does to the body to cause them?

            For the snotting up, does the bac cause that by relaxing the lungs so they're not efficient, and how would that work to cause congestion?

            For the headaches, I imagine some of it is due to dehydration, but I manage dehydration vigilantly since I'm an alkie, just what does bac do to exacerbate it despite my drinking tons of water? I know my skin is dryer in spite of the omega 3 and coconut oil I've been using, and despite the H20.

            How does it cause mind fog and hallucinations? One night last week, I woke myself up yelling at something across the room. Confused all of us!

                            Lo0p, that's interesting, but maybe you don't get the side effects from the combination, just like you didn't get the SEs I get from bac. I know you titted up (sorry, couldn't resist) extremely quickly, and I've been trying to up my dose now for two months and still at 50.

                            I'm very sensitive to side effects of meds in general, and I'm on hypertensives (three different drugs), which probably has something to do with it. Too many chemicals, and no one knows how they affect a woman long term, much less in combination with bac and perhaps benedryl.

                            I was taking benedryl and having HORRIBLE SE's in combo with bac, which I didn't have before the bac - which is why I started this thread. I can ONLY take benedryl due to my blood pressure (no other OTC congestion drugs don't have epinephrine and WORK), so it's my go-to med when I have sinus issues.

                            I was really dumbfounded when I had a sinus issue caused by bac and Neva Eva told me it was contraindicated with bac, so I stopped, and the worst of the SEs stopped (they were keeping me prone and unable to work). I can't take them in combination apparently, perhaps due to my hypertensives, or perhaps not, since NE found the contraindication info.
