Hi there.sorry in advance if this post is all over the place......I'm just so confused!there is just so much information out there I don't know where to start.I've been readiing stories on this site for months now but have only just signed up now.I'm petrified that now that I have actually decided to do something about my problems with drink nothing will work for me and I will have lost my safety net of these medications actually working. I am a mother of two fantastic boys and need for something to work!they are too young to notice my problem just yet and the periods of severe sickness that goes with this illness but I can't afford for them to grow up resenting me or hating me.I think I need to try baclofen but I am petrified of the side affects or withdrawal symptoms.I don't have a lot of money either and therefore worry about months Maybe can't afford it and then start to have withdrawal symptoms.I'm so confused about how much to take or where to begin.please help with any advice....please!scared mother.xTags: None

Hi Sanity!
You have taken the first step by joing us and posting! It is scarry tho!
I recently just started on bac...I am a single mom and worried about affording it long term but I think the trade off of maybe more pb&j, meds and no drinking are worth it.
I have tried Nal and Campral...they did not work...I have been in AA, several rehabs, and therapy....they did not work...I am seeing more progress on bac than I have on anything else...
I am sure those with more experience and success will chime in and let you know what the wonders of this drug can do if you really want to do something about your drinking!
Welcome! and best wishes on your journey!"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sanity, welcome aboard!
Don't let fear of the side effects deter you from starting Baclofen. We tend to post a lot about the SE's on the message board just to share experiences. The SE's are manageable. Just start slow and listen to you body. You can always stay at a certain dose for a couple of weeks or move back down a little.
As for the affordability, I think if you sit down and calculate how much money you would save a week by reducing your alcohol intake only, say, 50%, you will come to the conclusion that Bac will actually save you money (not to mention the other benefits).
What country do you hail from? I only ask this because depending on your country there are different methods for getting Baclofen at a very good price.
Thanks for joining the board. You sons, if they knew, would be very proud of you!
Peace, GromGood judgment comes from experience; experience comes from bad judgment.

Hello Sanity, welcome!
Yes, it's confusing, but keep reading and reading and posting and asking questions. With the alkie brain, or maybe it's just mine, it takes a while to absorb the information and make sense of it.
I can say that having taken many different meds through my life, and usually being in the 2% who have an adverse reaction, that some people are more sensitive than others, and some meds work for one person and not the next, it's unpredictable. You just have to try something, give it a real chance to work, and if it doesn't work, try another.
If you do try bac, order ALOT, because when you start taking it and raising the dose, you'll need to have a supply whether or not you want to continue it, because you can't just stop taking them, you have to gradually lower the dose to ease your body out off of it. Abrupt stoppage can cause seizures or something like that, as withdrawal commences.
Welcome, keep talking....

Hi, for sanity.
I think we can all relate to wanting the cycled to end!
It would help to know more about you, which I know can be really hard to do when you're new. Some of the things I'm always curious about are: How much do you drink? (I promise not to add any, like the doctors reportedly do!) What have you tried before? What's the goal, moderation or abstinence? None of that really matters though!
Baclofen is safe, and relatively inexpensive.
We can tend to dwell on the side effects (that can be fun! ha!) but they're not unmanageable.
They tell me it works, lol, but I'm still on the path...
If when reading through the posts, you find someone you connect with, please feel free to reach out to them via private message or by posting on their thread. Or yours!
Weekends are quiet here, but trust me when I tell you someone will get back to you with a suggestion or some advice.
Good luck, hang in and keep talking. (No reason to be sorry, your post was fine, but then they all are.)
:welcome:

Uk, while I think your story is a valuable contribution to the discussion and a thorough understanding of the pros and cons of baclofen I will not have this discussion on a thread from a woman who has one post.
If you would like I can start a thread dedicated to just that, please let me know via pm, on my thread or yours.
Thank you for your consideration for her confusion. I'll not add to it.
I hope things have improved for you now that you're not taking baclofen anymore.
In all sincerity, best to you,
Karen

I bumped some threads for you, for sanity.
The main one is the information links thread put together by Zen. There you will find the links to a great deal of shared information, both objective and subjective. I think this will save you a lot of time. It is hard work, but if you want it, it's worth it, isn't it?Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Things have improved because I decided to pull myself round, I was fed up of feeling rubbish. I am still using Bac as a sleep aid but it doesn't appear to be working, perhaps I've got a dud batch!!!
I was only asking a valid question about your advice.

Sanity.
Not so much to say but welcome and I hope that Bac will do what it's done for me.
The trepidation with with what you are about to do is what should accompany a potentially life altering decision. Its real and this is the place to air any doubts, you'll get some very meaningful feedback.
I also moan about the financial costs but there is no compared to what alcohol has been doing to me and my family it fades to insignificance. I was appalled that I had to spend all this money on a drug that had no serious track record, was used off label and had no medical supervision available unless you were the type of person that could afford a therapist. I am so grateful that I decided to give it a go.
Baclofen by all accounts is an incredibly safe drug. Check for contrindications with any other medication you are using and go at your own pace but do go and keep progressing.
I wish you the best and it may help to see my log here

Welcome sanity (no pun intended)
As other wise posters have already mentioned, the relative cost is negligible. Wow, I'm really battling with spelling! (a Side Effect, but certainly tolerable) That's not much help if short-term wise, you can't afford it, but try to take the long-term view here. Many people have successfully cured themselves, supposedly an impossibility, and the money they no longer spend on a daily booze habit must be significant!
Good luck with your journey,
Cheers,
BleepHaving hit the switch, I now post under the username "bleep". Look forward to seeing you on the other side...

Hi Sanity--
If you call Dr. L, he is very willing to negotiate on pricing for his consultations. Tell him your financial info--he would likely discuss a payment plan that works for you! And re: baclofen prices, keep in mind that Dr. L uses Walgreens as his provider of choice (but he will use a different bac provider if you request). Walgreens has a "generic drugs club" that costs $20 to join, but once you do so, Bac is totally affordable! Bac is less than $15 for 336 10 mg pills on their generic plan, as of yesterday. No matter what you do, Bac will be more affordable than what you pay for AL. Hang in there, my dear. You have an end in sight. :h and :l
