Olivier Ameisen
In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"Tags: None

Double blind trials
Double blind rules out the 'belief' factor and I think makes any 'cure' for a disease which is as many-fold, as well as deceptive as alcoholism, even more solid. Ok this involves a high degree of risk, but the participants have the option not to take part - or to take part in the hope they do receive what may prove to be a cure.
I come from a scientific background and the double-blind would be my ultimate test, cruel in someways but how else do you prove it?
Anecdotal is fine but the majority who try it have been searching for some time, which shows some motivation for change. Others may be attracted for other benefits, yet find themselves somehow sober(which may or may not be baclofen related). To be a real cure I'd like to see baclofen used with random alcoholics, in double blind trials or just tell them they are trialling a special multi-vitamin or something.
I am still open to bac(no matter what some think on here, even though I continue to support them), I just want to see more evidence after my bad experience where it was ruining my life as much or even more than alcohol was in the first place.

Double blind trials
Ethical considerations aside for a moment, I wonder how a double blind study is performed for a drug with obvious SE's? Taken to the extreme, it's like testing a pill that makes you turn bright blue, and then go mad. It is immediately obvious that those who turn blue are not in the control group, and have been given the drug, so the whole premise of the DB test is negated?
Cool site, Otter, a lot of work must have gone into it. Busy going through it now...

Double blind trials
Firstly you would have a trial to isolate the SEs, then you could have trial with another drug that simulates the same SEs(I can think of all sorts of drugs/meds that feel like Bac already).
You also don't tell the subjects you are giving them Bac. For all they know the 'cure' being tested could be L-Glut, Topa, Bac, Campral, Something completely different.
The anecdotal is fine but always biased unless you don't know what you are taking, and you weren't looking for a fix anyway.
Bleep you've cut your drinking in the last week(haven't seen absolute figures yet though) but as a fellow alcoholic I know I've also gone through phases like that too - either because I've believed in something, or because it's just been the nature of the beast.
One study I found for bac only used 5 weeks sobriety as their success measure. Ahem I've acheived that several times with rehab alone, once with a home detox and will power plus 6 months minus 7 days via my own 12 step(none AA) and other dietary/behavioural remedies.
A proper scientific study needs to be made, as well as funded. Hey how about we try and contribute?Put money where our mouth is for future benefit, as well as ourselves?
I'm not terribly monied, as I say I only have me to support myself but I would pledge a decent sum and I'm sure everyone else would since we all say we believe in bac.

Double blind trials
I don't know - there was mention of a fund in another thread, but I would like to see some pledges since everyone here says they'd like a study.
I'm a sceptic yet I'd put large sums where my mouth is(and consider I don't have a supportive system, don't own a home nor have significant pension provisions).

I have found the thread here;

So what are we all waiting for?

Double blind trials
I agree with bleep, I don't think our donations would make a dent in the cost of a study. It sounds like a job for a government or nonprofit group. I'd suggest a petition, but I don't know how seriously it would be taken with signatures like "bleep" and "UKblonde" and characters from novels.

Double blind trials
I didn't say I wanted my signature to be used.
In the meantime I'm still interested in Bac and am seeking information on ANY rehabs in the UK who may use BAc. I've tried Pming Sunny V but her PM box is full.
Can anyone assist please?
