Snow is white. Mud is brown. "I'm dreaming of a brown Christmas" does not sound like a good song!

Hi space! I just read your thread too. What is a panto? (I think that's what I read!) I hope you are having a good day.

Bruun, I'm still thinking of you and hoping you are OK - especially since your knees were swollen and bruised shortly before your last post. Wishing you a Happy New Year!

Hello campers and lurkers and learers,

              Leerers? Yes, that's better.

Is, FOS is a prebiotic sugar, as follows its defined by Wiki. Think its helpful to the gut generally taken with probiotics and it is sweet so can be used in protein shakes but you should start using it slowly or you can have hershey squirts:
FOS serves as a substrate for microflora in the large intestine, increasing the overall gastrointestinal tract (GI Tract) health. It has also been touted as a supplement for preventing yeast infections.
Several studies have found that FOS and inulin promote calcium absorption in both the animal and the human gut.[5][6] The intestinal microflora in the lower gut can ferment FOS, which results in a reduced pH. Calcium is more soluble in acid, and, therefore, more of it comes out of food and is available to move from the gut into the bloodstream.
FOS can be considered a small dietary fibre with (like all types of fibre) low caloric value. The fermentation of FOS results in the production of gases and acids. The latter provide some energy to the body.

Pete, thanks for thinking of my BP, that was cool. Yes, I have magnesium in many forms (since the dietary supps can cause the squirts too). Did you know epsom salts, the stuff you feed your roses and you soak your tired feet in, is magnesium? A great way to absorb Mg without the dietary distress. Also I have a fizzy powder of it for drinking, and its in my calcium supplements along with D. And I still have borderline high BP! But... in January, around the 18th, I am going to start getting thinner (yes, another go-round on the dieting front). The weight loss project I started last year is still underway and a few bouts of intensive dieting are part of my strategy to be healthier on my 50th in August and to help my back and feet feel better. The weight loss should result in my being able to reduce from three to two BP pills a day, at least.

Space, I won't tell you about the weather here, it will just make you want to move. However, as Neva knows, this is not normal winter weather and I'm sure will turn to shit in a very few days.

DG & Space, my knee incident/tripping apparently sprained my back, ugh. But the bruises and swellings are going down quickly which means somehow I must be getting more vitamin C than I think. Maybe its in the ice cream?

Also, snow turns brown once its on the ground for a while, and is a sodden depressing mess. We obviously need more dogs around to yellow it up, such a prettier mood color is yellow over brown!

Bruun! Happy New Year! Friends and leerers too!!!

Wow you are such a wealth of info. Never heard of FOS before - will investigate more! I'm very sorry to hear about your back getting strained in the knee accident! Ugh.

Hey - what is this crazy talk about 50??? You ARE 29 just like the rest of us, right? Except Brenda who is at least 55....
                I'm IN for a great 2012!

                  Bruun's Titting UP

Pet Peeve: When some unknown cat comes into MY yard and beats up MY cat. Fucker.

Question: Anyone have a Kindle Fire? My mom gave me a Kindle Touch which I returned but am considering the Fire because it has color, web browsing, a usb port for charging and also transferring data, MPG player, movie/video player, ereader (although doesn't do ePub), wifi (but no 3G). It's only $199. If it had a GPS and 3G I'd be happier but it would be great for plane trips (WSJ and other content including library books). Any opinions? I don't want something just for reading, because I find actual used books cheaper than Kindle books even when shipping is included.

Edit: The Kindle Fire doesn't have text to speech (it doesn't read to you like other Kindles). HUGE disappointment.

I hope everyone had a great New Years. Mine was fun. Random people were commenting that I was the friendly/outgoing one of the bunch. I've never been the friendly one, before! :H

I just ordered from Amazon Make It Paleo cookbook. Does the recipe for Jamaican jerk salmon look delicious? Absolutely. Will it be improved by making it with wild Alaskan salmon caught by yours truly? As Sarah Palin would say "You betcha "

Bruun, I haven't heard anything good about the Fires, except that they're super cheap.

Oh and it looks like we have an army of Germans in here. I'm only a quarter German so don't really count. When I tell people what my country of heritage is, I usually get a blank look, which I find extremely rewarding. I almost always win my personal game of most obscure ancestry.

Why don't you move then Space, or get a SAD lamp, maybe that will help it be less dreary. One thing I have learned is location isn't happiness. On the other hand, relocating can be exciting, at least for the first couple of years.

Can't comment on the Fire. I got the Touch for Christmas and am digging it so far. I tried out the text to speech functionality - from what my Kindle told me, it's a prototype sort of thing that they are testing? And you can give feedback if you like it. Thing is, it's like a computer program that sounds out the words, and it doesn't have any kind of tone or emphasis. I found it more confusing than anything, and can't see myself ever using it.

Woo hoo! I started getting some comments like that as well, once I got on HDB and hit the switch.

You'll have to let me know if that cookbook is any good. I think for now I'm just going to stick w/the Primal Blueprint one that I got for Christmas and whatever paleo recipes I can find online (of which there are tons!), before buying anything else. Besides, I need that money to be able to afford grass-fed meats!! Love that you're planning to catch the salmon yourself! I've got an Excalibur dehydrator if you want to go in on some jerky making together.

Ok, you've piqued my curiosity. What's your country of heritage?

I figure I'm about half German, and the other half is a mish mash of Western European. Which basically means that I'm a mutt.

Thanks for the info about FOS, Bruun. It sounded familiar, but after reading the info. you provided, I don't think that I have heard of it before. I keep reading that paleo helps put autoimmune disorders into remission, so I'm just going to concentrate on sticking to it for now, which has been really easy to do! Then at some point I'll reintroduce kombucha and see how I react to it. I'd love to be able to make it part of my daily health routine, especially now that I know how easy it is to brew! I can't believe I was so intimidated by it for so long.

Happy New Year to everyone. I've never cared for making a big deal out of the new year, I view the 1st as just another day. And every day is a chance to make a change or a fresh start or a resolution. 2011 was definitely a year of change for me. It didn't quite go the way that I had expected (then again, when does that really EVER happen?! :H). But I'm positive that even the "bad" experiences served/are serving a purpose. Through them, I've learned a whole heck of a lot about myself, which actually was something that was on my agenda.

                            And now, back to work!

                                Bruun's Titting UP

Hi Bruun and Friends! Bruun - I saw that timer idea you and Space were talking about on her thread. I need to do that a time or 20 before school starts again!

Is - what kind of stuff are you liking to make in your dehydrator? I've never tried jerky but would like to. I'm not a huge jerky fan myself - and can definitely take a pass on the regular store bought stuff. But Mr. Doggy is gluten free now so jerky is becoming more of a staple. (stuff he can keep in his truck in lieu of fast food!) I'd like to make my own I think - without gluten containing soy sauce, MSG, etc. Have you made jerky? If so, any recipes you like?

Pete - that was an awesome compliment on New Years! It's funny how AL fools us. What I *thought* I was like when drinking was not the reality. I'm sure too if the Bac is helping reduce social anxiety, that's a plus!

So Space. What you're saying here is that you are also 29? FABULOUS!!!!

Finally got the decorations off the tree today. And I will confess. I himmed and hawed about putting up the Christmas Village and in the end, didn't. And today I was glad for that! :H

I'm sort of getting excited to get back to school. WAY more fun than year end book keeping is going to be the next 1.5 weeks.....

                                This semester:

                                Family Dynamics & Counseling
Diversity in Addiction Counseling (same teacher as Dual Disorders so this will be good!)
                                Treatment Delivery Models
                                Group Counseling
Psychopharmacology - YEAH!! Everyone says this is really hard but the teacher is awesome. I can't wait. I will be handicapped by my deteriorating memorizer, and I'm sure the offsetting improvements in my bullshitter probably won't help in this class as much as some others. But bring it on anyway!

So what new stuff will be going on in 2012 for you all?
