Bruun's Titting UP
How great to see everyone back and the fire roaring. Let me just tuck in between you guys and get some warmth in my bones.
SP, of course I still love you. Ne, crashing after eating is usually caused by too many carbs and not enough protein, but other than that, I don't know. You can also try probiotics, the expensive kind. If you have a worm, try DE (food grade only) and any parasite you're studying will be afeared of ya. Diotomaceous earth, DE. Good fiber and parasite killer as well as dog wormer. Much better than chemicals.
Re gluten, it's not that hard! At least I didn't think so. I cut out all grains too though and THAT makes things difficult if you like the comfort of some quinoa or brown rice sometimes. Check out SMARTCARB bread by Julian Bakery. Its like $7/loaf but there's a no carb and also a no gluten variety, usually found in the meat/freezer section because it spoils fast (maybe because its real food?). If you're bread addicted, it can help you through. Want posted a thread about it in Holistic last year.
Red, my house is a headache financially too, I'm so torn. I'm not underwater but I've lost half its value and I still owe $260K! All the years of mortgage payments and I owe what its worth, just about. PLUS they're putting our dead end street through to the freeway, expect 10,000/cars a day to pass by in a year or two. Time to sell? I need to update it to sell it so that's frustrating too. Also, I don't know what product has more probiotic but I think they all have different stuff - the pills come in various combinations and complement the kefir and kombucha. Remember that kefir from the store is pasteurized so not all the goodies are in there. I'd definitely add raw whole milk to whatever you try. Its the only thing in the store not pasteurized. Uhoh, no casien though? Maybe get a small container and drink it when your son can't see. Its medicinal! Last on that - raw milk is less problematic than pasteurized because it has all those probiotics in it, it causes less digestive upset for lactose intolerant peeps and probably would be an interesting first step if you end up adding dairy back in your son's diet in a few months. I'd try the raw milk/raw butter for a month before adding other dairy back in, and then switch and see if there's a difference for another month. THAT would be good research!
Life, nice to see ya. Hiya Nut! LOL
Lush, my heart goes out to you. :l:h:h

((((((Lushy)))))) I don't even know what to say except I'm still thinking of you and just hoping you can find a way to move through this time in your life. :l
Pete. :h That is all.
Ne if you suspect blood sugar issues (up, crashing, etc.) as part of the problem, it's pretty cheap to get a blood glucose meter and some strips and just test yourself and keep notes. There is a web site called Blood Sugar 101 or something like that which I found very informative when i was concerned and got my own meter. We're not our own doctors of course (are we???) but those meters are a handy way to get some idea whether you need to see a doc or not related to blood glucose.
Mr. Doggy's issues finally got the best of him in late 2011. He ended up in the emergency room. Turns out he had been diagnosed with dairy alergies as a child but had always ignored that. (I had no idea) Ate all kinds of dairy. LOVED dairy. Binged on dairy. Until his body said NO MORE. His digestive systems rebelled and also decided it wasn't going to put up with gluten any more either.
Now that Mr. Doggy has been off of dairy & gluten for at least a month now, all kinds of stuff he would have NEVER attributed to food issues have cleared up. Including his hemeroids. (sp) It's actually very logical the impact that food (nutrition) has on us. So why do I continue to want to throw garbage down the hatch?
Anyway....I'm always glad to pull up a seat at the campfire and learn something new about food!!! Is anyone outside of california able to by raw dairy easily? The only way you can get it in IL is to join a co-op. So basically you are part owner of the cow. Cannot touch raw milk in a store. There is some commerciald "raw milk cheese" but I'm quite sure that is pasteurized within an inch or more of it's life.
Wow - that was long. Sorry! The night class schedule is kicking my ass. Still waking up at 3 and 4AM. I hope my body adjusts soon!
Good to see all you fine folks! And Brenderella too. My house could use some cleaning. chop chop!!! (says the evil step sister! :devil

Holy cow, the ER? Poor guy! I didn't know food allergies could do that! Was there any permanent damage? Do tell all! I know you're willing to share the dirty details, dirty girl! I'm sure Mr Doggy is glad this is an anonymous forum since his hemorrhoids (what a tricky word to spell, I looked it up and still questioned it) are now public knowledge.
Raw milk is available in some states, but its tricky. Lots of time you have to buy a cow share. California made their requirements tighter in the past couple of years and sometime during the holidays they had to pull all the product from hundreds of stores at a great cost. All because ecoli was found in the calf field, which is not connected to the dairy cow fields.

The ER thing happened back in....November perhaps? One Sunday morning he was SO sick. **gross out warning**
Stuff spewing out both ends and HORRIBLE abdominal cramps/pain. All he could do was lay on the floor in the bathroom writhing. Nothing in our medicine cabinet helped any of those symptoms. After hours of this he agreed to go to the ER.
They tested everything blood wise, looked for signs of kidney stones, gallstones, etc. etc. They could find nothing wrong. What helped him "feel better" (comparatively speaking) was the very strong pain killers in the IV bag.
Since they could find nothing wrong they wanted him to follow up the next day with a doc. So we went to the doc (with him very weak, but not in pain and spewing since he had eaten nothing!). The doc couldn't find anything either - had no ideas at all - and sent him to the hospital for more tests. They couldn't find anything either. So back home we went.
By Tuesday or Wednesday he felt like eating again and ate his normal crap and voila - sick again. In the mean time of all this, I had been chatting with friends on another forum and started suspecting dairy and/or gluten intolerance. Mr. Doggy did NOT want to hear any of that, but due to the pain and misery, he became willing to consider the possibility of a dairy intolerance. Through trial and error he figured out that these days, ANY dairy - even the smallest amount - makes him sick. This was all trial and error over a couple months time.
Then he got really sick again one night after NO dairy. That's when he became willing to consider the possibility that he is now gluten intolerant as well. Now he eats no gluten or dairy and feels better than he has in YEARS. He is realizing he had all kinds of less "emergency like" symptoms going on for years. He just didn't realize "feeling that way" wasn't normal. He would almost always experience discomfort after eating. ALWAYS. Can you imagine? He had bead GERD and ate rolaids by the handful. He doesn't need those any more. Some minor skin irritation issues have cleared up, etc.
It's been a miracle really. He really poo pood the idea of the issue being dairy/gluten at first. But pain is a powerful motivator (as we all know around here). Now he thanks me for pushing it. And now he is on board with eating healthier, ranting about Monsanto, etc. A true convert. :H
What is amazing to me is that the hospital / doctor bills (thank goodness for insurance) for that episode were thousands of dollars. And NOT ONE DOCTOR even hinted this might be related to a food tolerance issue. When they could find nothing wrong among the things they were looking for, they just shrugged. Amazing. I still can't believe some doctors really don't believe in this stuff.
What is also interesting in the broad context of cravings, etc. is that Mr. Doggy WAS TOLD HE WAS ALLERGIC TO DAIRY as a child. All these years he was having low level symptoms of that. But he CRAVED dairy. LOVED his dairy. He used to chug a gallon of milk standing by the open refrigerator door. CRAVING what is harming us. Sound familiar???? What complex physical/psychological creatures we are.

It sounds like you're a wonderful pair, DG, he stood by you while you were consumed in your cravings and you rescued him when no one else could. Thank God for the internet, eh? If only we'd had it twenty or thirty years ago when so many of us needed information and help. We could have been like Lo0p or Isolde and rid ourselves of the disease before it took over our lives.
I remember in my early 20's, this would have been late '80s, my friend's dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. There was NO information about it available in libraries, and book stores didn't have cancer books to help her understand and see what she could do to help. My mom worked in a hospital and was able to request a search on the topic which provided information that was practically impossible to discern. There was no internet to help understand the information contained in that sheaf of papers, of course. And there were no progressive ideas about what causes cancer, alternative therapies, etc. What a different world it is now! How easy to research everything, compared to how it was then.
I was struck by how similar the issues actually were, between his GI issues and mine, and all alcoholics with their cravings for the poison that is slaying them. Us.

Bruun,
I am reading and you are right; why did it take us so long? (The young ones recognizing alcohol as a demon?)
Anyway, moms' MRI looks like everything has become frozen in time! This is good, it is giving her time!
This came on Monday and her attitude and mental state has adjusted dramatically!
I will now try and get back in the threads. Where is Brenderella? :-(
Love you guys!

The other day I picked up some raw milk straight from the farm. It tasted great but the container stank out the fridge; everything started to taste of cow poop. Ho hum!"My fault, my failure, is not in the passions I have, but in my lack of control of them." Jack Kerouac

Hey Pete, I have been muddling the same issue for months. My ADD is particularly bad right now. As is my depression!
Brender, you might want to wash the container. If that doesn't get rid of the poop smell, you're drinking poop-contaminated milk. That's not such a big deal if you don't mind the smell. Dairy cows usually don't have ecoli nor samonella but their calves do, I've lately heard.
Hi Space, I'm behind on most threads too, don't worry about it. We all are, it seems. About depression, I am deep mired in it too. Gabapentin seems to help but its not deliverance all the time, just eases it. I find I have to do "day improvement" stuff like make a plan to be busy enough so that I'm not alone all day and all night. Made a list last night of stuff I want to get done today, because yesterday I accomplished little and read alot and watched TV all night, it was depressing. So today's list includes dinner with a relative, which will end the day and before that, I have a list of about five things I need to do. So I won't have time to focus on alienating and anxious thoughts and regrets.
Lush, really so glad about your mum. :l And your AF accomplishment!
Now, I resist but I force myself off the computer before I derail my plans for the day. Have a peaceful and productive Sunday, all, and no regrets!

Hey Bruun and Space, sorry to hear about the depression. With this new(ish) job, what I'm finding that helps pick me up is just going out there and talking to people, as strange as that can be for me sometimes.Knowledge of what is possible is the beginning of happiness.

Hey Campers!!!
Lushy - so happy to read the good news about your Mom!! Hope things continue in the positive for her.
Brenderella, about that poop smell at the fridge. Oh....never mind.
Pete, :h
Hi Space, Bruun, Is, Red, Ne, anyone else who I forgot or who is lurking or who happens along sooner or later!
I do not suffer from clinical depression (that I know of). But just in general, when I *think* what I want/need is a day holed up to read, watch TV, etc........ that usually makes me feel worse. If I feel like isolating, I feel worse by isolating. I'm with you Pete - when I feel like that I usually feel better if I make myself go do something around people. Seems so opposite!! Go figure.
OK - back to the homework!
Love the fire as always Bruun!
