OMG I can't believe I left that off my list!!! I've been taking Krill Oil but am about to switch back to cod liver oil for the winter. (more vit D)

I don't supplement any extra Vit D because my levels get tested every 6 months and I stay at the high end of normal.

That's an interesting article. I've been reading lots of debunking lately about the whole "breakfast is the most important meal of the day - eat 6 mini meals - hunger immediately slows your metabolism" stuff. Intermittent fasting is an interesting concept. I may dabble with that a little more after I get the sugar monster back out of my life.

I bought a blood glucose monitor too this week so I can have the facts about that rather than just make assumptions about what my BG must be doing. And also get my head out of the sand relative to my higher diabetes risk since it runs in my family. I think that facts about BG will somehow help me as I explore some of this stuff and figure out what works for me and what doesn't. I find it interesting that for many people who adopt some form of intermittent fasting, they have BG crashes initially but for many (most?) that sorts itself out.

We are encouraged to eat too much! And I've really fallen prey to that. Interesting discussions here as always! Thats again for that link.

DG, you should always take the fish oil, krill is overfished and our fish will have nothing to eat if this keeps going on!

Love that everyone here seems to tune into NPR. I used to get CarTalk and Terry Gross interviews on podcast but have forgotten how to do it. My MPG has radio, yay, hopefully it gets a signal here. I have yet to try it. I have my hypnotherapist sessions on it and a couple albums. And yes, DG, tomorrow is the perfect day to start your exercise/diet/etc. LOL

Okay, Grommet, I had to answer this too - and to tell a little story about shitcakes.

I was at a restaurant some ten years ago with my goofy dad and family, and Dad says he'll have the Shitcake Salad. Seems he got hysterical laughing about shitakes and decided to have fun with it. LOVE my Pops, I do. Shitakes, by the way, are one of the medicinal mushrooms you should incorporate into your diet along with Reikis (I think that's correct spelling) - google them for health benefits. Anti-carcinogenic shitcakes, and more benes besides.

Top three would be ALL-ONE, Fish oil (3-4 caps/day) and a B complex. And C. And fiber supplement and probiotic.

Personally I take C, All-One when I remember, Niacin for my cholesterol and its growth hormone benes, tryptophan sometimes, tyrosine in the AM with CO and chromium and B complex. D at night with melatonin, and a calcium supplement that has magnesium and D. I also take a magnesium drink a couple times a week. All this is in addition to the miscellaneous stuff like zinc, copper, B12, green tea, dandalion tea (good for liver), and a host of other crap. Sometimes I take nothing because its all so overwhelming. That's when the ALL-ONE becomes most important, because at least if I take that with my fiber, I know I've had something good that has multiple aminos and vitamins in it. Also I use celtic salt because of the minerals in it that haven't been refined out, organic foods, and my green smoothie. Sorry Grommet, I hate to say there's even more bottles of stuff around here but since its becoming a novella here, I'll just stop. I do think the D helps with my mood.

When I first poured the threads and read about coconut oil I was thinking pool girls. Then I googled it as a health supplement and was ashamed at my shallowness (well, not really.., ).

So, as a blank slate, give me your top 3.

howdy all! i've missed you much during my time of being side-tracked (3 whole days!). just wanted to hop in and say hey and hello and howdy doodie. you're reminding me with this discussion not to take my health for granted ~ i've got to get back on track and start eating more of those oils and such. i think, too, that intermittent fasting -like intermittent sprinting tee hee- is good for you. i've been doing it unintentionally for weeks, and i feel good!

Bruun, in the podcast today he was talking about leaky gut, and actually one of the whole reasons to eat a Paleo diet is to avoid the gut inflammation caused by, among other things, lectins and gluten found in carbs, dairy, and more. Have you looked into that stuff?

Top 3, huh? Ok, here we go:

                      1) Omega 3 supplement (I take krill oil, but also supplement with ground flaxseed, chia seed, Udo's Choice on occasion, and I try to eat a serving of salmon and a can of tuna each once a week)
                      2) Astaxanthin!! I'll take this stuff forever. Here's a great article on the benefits of astaxanthin by Dr. Mercola - Astaxanthin – A More Powerful Eye Antioxidant
                      3) This one is a toughy. I'm going to go with coconut oil. This one's a personal choice for me, because it keeps me from having to take meds for my blood pressure.

I think I really need to get into listening to NPR. Treat me like I'm 5 and tell me about it somebody, wouldja? I'm getting a new iPod for Christmas which will have a LOT more memory than my tiny little 8 gig that I've got now, so I'll have room for podcasts and audiobooks and all kinds of other things. As I no longer have Dr. Berman to listen to Oprah Radio on XM on the way home from work, I could use something else that is educational and enlightening!

                      SP, :H @ Sacajawea!

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in the States. And happy Thursday full of gratitude for everyone else! :l

I'm working from home for a few hours today, which basically consists of monitoring things and making sure there are no fires to put out. Which means I'll be on MWO a lot, and reading SP's article on Ghrelin, and listening to the Lovingkindness meditation that NE posted, and basically researching the crap out of everything, as usual!

And I remember you asking me a few days ago Bruun if I was working on Friday. Yup, we don't get Friday off, the market is open. Trading is only a half day though, the market closes early, so I most likely will be able to get out a little bit early tomorrow. I don't mind, it's so quiet it doesn't feel like work anyway! And because I'm working (kinda!) today, I'll get a free vacation day to compensate. So all in all, not a bad deal. I can smell the pies baking.... mmmm!

                        Bruun's Titting UP

Just read the Ghrelin article. I can certainly attest to the mental sharpness. I was doing intermittent fasting for a couple of months, fasting 16-18 hours a day. And usually after about 14 hours, I would start to feel wired and focused. And once that kicked in, I felt like I could just keep fasting. The problem for me is that once I broke the fast, I crashed. I also became obsessed with food. If I was still hungry at 10pm, I would think, "If I eat now, then I can't eat until 2pm tomorrow." Or sometimes I would eat more at night, even when I wasn't still hungry, because I felt like I had to eat enough to sustain me for 16 hours.

Maybe one day I'll try it again. There is a blog called The Lean Saloon that looks at IF differently. Rather than trying to fit in everything that you would normally eat in a day in your 8 hour window, you just eat what you normally would eat during that time, which would typically be 2 meals. So you are basically cutting your calorie intake that way. There is the school of thought that calorie restriction leads to longer life. And I've read studies where rats on a calorie restricted diet did live longer and were healthier. If I try IF again, I think I'll do it that way. Me and big meals just don't get along.

By the way, I read the comments at the end of the Ghrelin article, and SP, every time you linked the article here, it somehow showed up in the comments!! :H

Bruun, you may want to watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQtqP7ShwVQ[/video]]Gelatin..the other white powder? - YouTube

As of yesterday, I started taking gelatin. I read that it actually helps to rebuild cartilage in joints. That's what I need for my knees. I just picked up some Knox gelatin from the baking aisle, but they also make a product called Nutrajoint that I ordered from Amazon. I'm just taking the packets until my order gets here.

So I was wondering what other benefits gelatin might have, in addition to helping my knees. And I came across the above YouTube video. He says some suprising things about Tryptophan and melatonin. I know you said you can't watch YouTube videos on your work computer, so here's a link to the article that pointed me to that video:

Hi Pete, yes I went gluten free early this year and dairy free at the same time for this purpose. I also stopped eating any grain/bean. Months later, no difference. Did I miss something - is lectin in other stuff I may have inadvertently eaten? Thanks for thinking of me.
