    Bruun's Titting UP

I'm very bummed out and figure this is a good place to hear others tell me they have the same issue so I will feel in good company...

I found out last night that I have degenerative disc disease and my last disc is practically fused to whatever is under it. It looks like a tail in the xrays but when I try to wag it doesn't work.

Apparently 15 years ago when my back went out, my dr did not do anything like tell me to go to a back dr or get PT, he just gave me muscle relaxants. DUH. If he was still in practice I'd shoot him a nastygram. Now all these years later, I may need surgery if it gets any worse. Great news especially for a single woman who will be on paired down medicare by then. WTF!

dammit, bruun, that sucks!!! i am so sorry to read it! (gee, i wonder why he's not still in practice! maybe he sucked so badly that someone else did more than send a nastygram. or maybe he just got old and died.) your experience reminds me of my father's gp, who told him not to bother with the prostate cancer screening, as it wasn't reliably accurate. twenty years later, dad found himself w second degree prostate cancer. oops. well, it got him to stop drinking, so that is something. (the same dr, when i asked him at about ten years old why my breath sometimes skipped on the exhale -like the oppsite of what happens when you cry really hard- told me that my breathing was off because i was weird.)

i can't believe that, after however many years you've had in banking, you'd be pared down to shitty medical insurance! (wait, yes i can! i've been showing the parts on 9/11, guantanamo bay, and cuba to some of my classes, so i should be damn well aware of how effed up is this country's health insurance system! i take it back!)

aww, bruun, the optimist in me (most of me) wants to tell you that something will come along and make the prognosis better. ...so i will. somehow, this is not a sentence
      , per se.

That's the irony Roo, I have good insurance, PPO, I pay up the ass for it too. I can choose my own doctor in or out of network, and this guy was kind, caring, methodical, careful. But western medicine! They think chiropractors are quacks but if I'd been to one fifteen years ago, I'd be okay now. NO WONDER I'm afraid I'll fall all the time, my back only bends certain ways for load bearing and that includes dog leash load. Shit.

Oh well, could be that I never got it checked at all and just fell apart one day in the future.

Thanks for your support!!!! Arg. I need it.

dammit, dammit. does your insurance pay for any chiropracty or however you call it? mine does, by some miracle. (damn, i have it goooood!) maybe you could get some adjustments now... maybe you could do something preemptive? (ha ha, 'preemptive'!) argh is right! sorry about the dog-pulling-challenge, the inflexible back. yes, 'tis good that you know about it now, and aren't in the future falling apart. (you won't be, either.) i'll give you all the support you need, woman. wish i could share my genetics, too (minus the alcoholism, of course).

                Bruun,

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear about the back. The good news is you and your doc figured out now when you're young and virile.

Just being aware of the problem will allow you to change things around a bit now, rather than when things get really bad. Like putting one of those muzzle things on your dog when you take him for a walk (ftr I freakin' HATE those things, but with a 100 lb lab that is dumb as a doorknob, and a knee that was reconstructed 25 years ago, I'm starting to learn to suck up my pride).

ImHereNow, thanks for checking in. For some really cheap thrills I recommend you check out L0op's porn thread - I thinks its "The Sexual Side Efects of Bac" or something like that.

Hi Ru, I have a $1000 deductible but yes, that's how I found out about the issue, through the chiro, and yes, I'm going to spend wads of dough working on this to make sure it doesn't get worse.

Wish I could have pre-empted this! Effing doctors.

My kombucha got mold and the big old mother just disappeared. I threw it out in the garden and there was nothing but the tea and a blob of mold on the new little scoby.

Hmmmm. Guess I'm too lazy even for kombucha making!

                          WTH is Isolde?

Edit: Also thought I should add that after the diagnosis regarding my spine, I realized again how much the baclofen helps with the sciattica. I was calling it sciattica in my head but hadn't been diagnosed with it so just thought it was due to lack of stretching but no, it's real and the baclofen helps tremendously.

And the gabapentin not only lifts my mood but helps tremendously with my foot pain.

Incidentally, both of these drugs are miracles for PMS and cramps.

I'm sorry to hear about your back. I can recommend some exercises but your doctor is probably better qualified (my husband is an exercise physiology professor).

On the other hand, impressed you're making komboucha, even though my first taste of it was nasty stuff...

Hi Sabby, try to find the GT brand (or is it GTS?). You can take a bottle of it and drink 2/3 of it then make kombucha from the rest. Its easy to get it going, at least where I live, the house never gets colder than 50F inside. Actually, I wonder if the mother died because it got too cold and somehow that let mold in? Or else something got into my container. I'm going to start again maybe this weekend.

Thanks for the offer, I have exercises to do but will hit you up if I don't get better!

Odd, very odd behaviour. Reminds me of witchcraft: all you women sitting around talking about your potions. I'm off now to Google "how to make a ducking stool"
