The chemicals and the processed food have alot to do with the fat in the US, in my opinion. There's so much toxic build up Consider the local deli counter, or the local subway restaurant (sandwich chain) - all the meats have nitrates and sugar and more stuff that make it fattening. Sugar = fat. Starch = sugar = fat. Starch is in everything - canned soups, to thicken them up, even some cheeses are adulterated by the stuff. And of course, we haven't even broached the GMO aspects of frankenfood on our bodies.
I couldn't agree more. I also believe that all of the processed food is a huge contributor to cancer. Just my belief. And in that vein:

We raw feed our dogs. Mr. Doggy did the research on it during one of the big dog food recalls about....5 years ago maybe? Our dogs have done really well health wise eating that way. Especially our older beagle - he was starting to have some health problems and the raw feeding took YEARS off of him. Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats was a basic book on the subject that even I could understand while swimming in vodka.
My boxer eats mostly chicken (because it's cheap!) but she also gets organ meat and fish mixed in regularly. On occasion she gets a treat of a turkey leg, which takes her FOREVER to eat, or some beef, or pork, or tripe or tongue or whatever. Depends on the sales!
