    New Bac User

I have been lurking on this site for a couple of weeks, and just joined today. :new:

Without getting into a long winded spiel, I was once a fairly successful trial attorney down here in Texas. As a result of my crack addiction, I am now a disbarred lawyer, a convicted felon and an ex-con.

I had given hope of ever conquering my mental obsession and the cues which triggered it. Providentially, I happened to watch the segment on the HBO documentary about addiction, where I heard about baclofen for the first time. I finally felt that someone actually understood what I had to endure.

I immediately went to my GP, and he agreed to write a prescription for baclofen, and titrate my daily dose to 80 mg. It seems to curb, but not suppress, my carvings at this level. After reading Dr. Amiesen's book and some of the threads on here, I have decided to ramp up and hit the switch. I have been holding at about 140 mg per day until I address a a few issues.

I am a little nervous. I weigh around 280 lbs, so using the 3.7 mg/Kg formula, I might need a HUGE amount to hit the switch. I worry about the safety of that.

Also, my GP won't go above 80 mg per day. I have been trying to find a nuerologist or an addictionologist who will try it. If I can't, I will have to go it alone.

Thanks to all of you for this community and the wealth of information you provide. It is a blessing.

You are in the right place.

The ole' 3.7mg/kg formula is false. Ameisen no longer uses that.

Weight and sex is not a factor. Apparently, according to out latest knowledge "addiction level" (someone correct me maybe) and genetics are the main factors.

Someone will chime in with a video about baclofen and cocaine craving for you to watch if I don't find it in a few minutes (it might be a part of the HBO documentary that you've already watched though, not sure).

    :welcome:

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byain0Vo5mo[/video]]YouTube - Baclofen dramatically reduces cocaine craving

edit: Go and find your switch! Others will chime in on how best to convince your doc to go higher OR score some more through international pharmacies.

Thinking out loud here: Wouldn't Dr. L be amenable to convincing other docs like PbarE's to go higher?

Don't worry about the weight thing. Loop is correct in that they are now saying that a certain mg/kg of drug to reach the switch doesn't seem to be the case. Actually, Dr L said it is genetics only that dictate what dosage you will need. So, unless you have a family memeber who has done this, you will be the pioneer my friend. Good luck to you and we are here to support you in your journey.

        Welcome friend.

Others have posted about the lack of correlation between weight and baclofen - I believe it as well.

You are in the right place, all addictions are the same, if you believe in the baclofen cure,

Good luck, will be very interesting to follow your progress...

Go well, PbarE, here you go!

Welcome PbarE! I also had a problem with cocaine, crack, and amphetamines (far more so than I ever did with alcohol) -- and that is mainly what I'm using bac for, even though most of the info around here is about alcohol -- I do think it works just as well, and the original article that spurred Dr. A's interest in baclofen was about a cocaine addict who happened to take baclofen for spasticity (or something) and noticed that it reduced or eliminated his cravings for cocaine. (Oh, sorry, I see you've read the book so you already know that...)

Also, my doctor is only willing (at this point) to prescribe me 80mg (as he says that is the FDA limit on safe dosage), but we've only just started out on the bac journey, so I'm still hoping to convince him to work with me at higher levels. I am bringing him a copy of Dr. A's book next time I see him and other info from this wonderful forum about dosages and titration, etc.

In the meantime, I have ordered extra bac to supplement the prescription from an overseas pharmacy.

          Best of luck to you!

Thanks so much to all of you. I have already picked up some good tips after less than a day. It is a comfort to have people who have already done this on your side.

I had the same worry. I weigh(ed) 260 lbs* when I started and was also concerned about having to go to an insane level to hit my switch. I made it to 225 mg for a few days and I think I was there or really close. I had to temporarily go back down to work out an unrelated health issue, but I have a good sense that my switch is somewhere in that vicinity.

The one positive about having your GP prescribing Bac for you is it will be in your medical record if a meteor ever fell on your head. The other possibility is to enhance you GP's scrip with self-prescribed (just make sure the mix is always consistent as they most likely will be different brands), or contact Dr. L for a full strength scrip.

              Welcome aboard and good luck!
