liver function test before taking antabuse?

I was wondering if any one here who takes/ has taken Antabuse had to have a liver function test before their dr would prescribe it to them. I'm afraid I'll have some liver damage (which is of course bad) and then won't be able to take AB. I think it is the only drug that will work for me. I am almost certain my dr. will not prescribe Bac, and campral didn't work for me.

    Thanks,

Yes, it is necessary to get a liver test to see if the liver is strong enough to metabolize the antabuse and to establish a baseline liver function level so that if it gets worse you can tell what is causing the problem (alcohol vs the Rx). They can still prescribe it in most cases even with some moderate damage but will follow the levels more closely or adjust the dosing accordingly. Follow their recommendations to the best of your ability. Good luck. Why do you believe that your doc won't prescribe the bac. It is safer for your liver (but not tested much)
