Baclofen works...so we won't be using it.

I don't know whether this research has been reported here or not, but I just spotted this on the BBC news website:

BBC News - Drug relapse brain region found in rats

The fascists at the BBC sometimes block their content from overseas IPs, so if you aren't able to follow that link here's the text:

Scientists in the US have identified an area of the brain which makes heroin-addicted rats relapse.

The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, showed that part of the medial prefrontal cortex was activated.

When the researchers blocked nerve cells in the region, there were fewer relapses.

Experts in the UK said the study was a technical 'tour de force'; however, it did not promise new treatments in humans.

The study worked on the idea that when addicts stopped taking drugs, but then returned to the place they were taking drugs, they were likely to relapse.

Rats were trained to take drugs in one environment, where they were delivered a dose of heroin.

The rodents then "went to rehab" in another environment where the feel of the floor, lights and sounds were different and there was no access to heroin.

Once the rats were "clean" they were returned to the drug-taking environment, where they demonstrated heroin-seeking behaviour.

By examining the rats' brains, the researchers showed increased activity in some neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex.

They then used drugs, muscimol and baclofen, to selectively inhibit this region. Heroin-seeking activity was then decreased.

Dr Jennifer Bossert, from the National Institute on Drugs Abuse in the US, told the BBC: "There are two main implications, at a research level we've demonstrated this cause/effect relationship in a specific set of activated neurons.

"In the clinical setting, heroin relapse is different to cocaine relapse so drug relapse is probably caused by different circuits for different drugs, which would have consequences for medication."

She also warned about transferring the findings into humans, saying: "You have to be very careful, you can't. Human addicts are very different to rat models, they're often multi-drug users, they're complex."

Ian Stolerman, Emeritus Professor of Behavioural Pharmacology at King's College London, said: "It's a considerable achievement, it's a research tour de force, which sheds new insight into the nerve cells in the brain which are important for drug-seeking behaviour in animal models.

"It doesn't, however, suggest a route for new treatments in the near future."
So, they've shown that baclofen prevents heroin addiction relapse in rats, but don't see any reason to try it on humans. WTF?

But anyway, good news for the rats I suppose. :nutso:

      Hey. Nice job Murphy.
It was reported here on NPR as well. The researchers were VERY clear that these results were not to be applied to humans. It was too early, blah, blah, blah.

Glad that Dr. OA had the foresight to apply for the patent. Now when they prove that his treatment works, they'll have to pay him!
      Woooohooo.
Wish they had to pay us, too. For being ten steps ahead and slogging through! It's been fun, though, hasn't it?

        Hi, Marie.
        :welcome: to the meds threads!
A lot of people get their bac from online sources, shipped from overseas pharmacies.

It really depends on where you are and what your goal is.
You may be able to get a prescription from your doctor, but probably not your addictions counselor.

There are a ton of resources here to answer just that, and help you make the decision.
        Best to you!

If my mind COULD be more fucking boggled at the stupidity and general (not always, but usually) stupidity of the medical profession this would do it. However, I passed that point a while back. But thanks for posting this Murph. Will go in my bookmark annals of "Important MWO."

MarieC. I now get my baclofen from Dr. Levin in Chicago: https://www.mywayout.org/community/f2...sen-41531.html

I started a long time fefore that with baclofen I ordered from Prescription drugs, Generic medicines, online indian Pharmacy

There are other posts about other pharmacies. This one always worked well for me.

Good Luck!!! You're heading in the right direction.

I feel really guilty to say it, but yeah it really hasn't been too big a hardship for me. I'm titrating down, no SEs to speak of and no cravings.

Pah, I don't know what all this alcoholism fuss is all about. Just pop the tab and it all goes away.:H

                It's all a bit confusing.

Here you have a drug that cures rats, and is relatively harmless to humans. It is readily available, and indeed humans have been taking it for various reasons for nearly 100 years. Over here, in the dark, gloomy corner, you have Steve, the twitching, sweating heroin addict who has tried ten times to stop, and failed every time. Steve will die in the near future, it is obvious to everyone, even Steve. Still, Steve is a complex organism, who probably has several addictions, so don't dare risk curing him of the obvious one.

You'd think some brave soul would just think fuck it, I'm going to give this a bash and see what happens. Oh, wait...

I don't understand this problem at all? It makes absolutely no sense to me, and is very frustrating.

Wait a minute, Batman! I thought this whole industrial scale animal torture stuff was all about adding to our collective knowledge 'n shit... you know, learnin' stuff we'd never have known before, like Shampoo Hurts When You Put It In Your Eye - (though I believe the jury is still out on that one so we might want to check it out on a few more million bunnies.)

But, let's get this straight -- what you're saying is, all these experiments don't really tell us jack shit? Holy fuuuck! Now what you gonna tell them rats, they died in vein? (They died looking for a vein, geddit! Heroin addicted rats! Check 'em out! They're hilarious! The ones on Meth are even funnier! No teeth, ha ha!)

Cos if the results don't tell us nuthin' - well, I'm scratchin' my noggin trying figure out what the fuckin' point is in this here research. But I'm a simple man. So long as I don't get that damn shampoo in my eyes, I'm happy...

I think we should start a thread where we develop a press release or an email that we can send out like some pyramid thing. Send it to your mailing list like people spread jokes around the office. That would do more for Baclofen than these ridiculous studies on rats.

Actually, my rat hit the switch the other day and he has not had a drink since!

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

My rat is still a hopeless drunk. But it's okay, he has no angst, or moral defects, he just enjoys himself, plastered out of his little rat brain.

You all better get your rats to a Methadone clinic!

Actually I think it's kinda cool these scientists are willing to give their time to help poor little junky rats. The research apparently can't be used to help humans, so it's entirely for the love of rats. Yay for science!
