    Respiratory stuff and blaming bac

I tried this before and crashed at about 90 mg because I just couldn't breathe at night. Went off the bac, slept with the window open all winter. Gotta love my hub because he put up with it, with two electric blankets and a humidifier running. I had a sleep study thing done in January, and it showed only nine episodes during the night - that's nothing, but I was not on the baclofen in January. The breathing problems stopped. Now, I'm back up to 60 mg, and the apnea came back with a vengeance.

I was talking to a neighbor today (not about the bac stuff, just the apnea) and she said that she puts a cold washcloth over her face and sleeps with a fan blowing in her face. It occurred to me that maybe the reason the apnea got worse is because it's getting much warmer at night. Maybe it was the cold air blowing in my face that made it better, and maybe the baclofen had nothing to do with it?

I reckon it's the baclofen for sure. I get it too, as do a lot of people. Waking up sitting bolt upright gasping for breath. My wife says I still do it now, occasionally.

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant, and your intercostal muscles and diapragm are all muscles. They relax, so you breathe a little shallower, especially at night for some reason. The result is that unpleasant massive drawing in of breath every now and again.

Nobody has, so far, relaxed enough to die, so it's nothing to worry about, it is just really unpleasant. Did you find yourself not able to sing along to songs, running out of breath before the end of the line?

Thanks Bleep. Now when it happens,I'll remind myself: "This is just unpleasant. It's not dangerous." It does kind of freak me out when it happens. Last night was fine. The night before, it happened several times an hour - not all night, but for a while.

I haven't been singing lately. Maybe I'll give it a go after some coffee.

        And I just keep learning.
The biggest reason for me to stop taking bac was because I found I lacked ambition and drive to do anything during the day (as well as loss of sex drive). I was completely off bac by about mid October last year but the lack of desire and drive didnt seem to disipate. My wife then told me that she thought I had sleep apnea because I would all of a sudden take a big gasp of air throughout the night. I have just recently taken a sleep apnea test and actually going to see my Dr about it tomorrow. I will enquire as to the effect that bac may have played in this. If anyone has any other questions pertaining to this, let me know and I will ask.
Something else I should mention - I started drinking coffee in the evening (1 cup) and I was wondering if even though it didnt keep me awake at night - if it might be disrupting my sleep enough to make me tired during the day. I cut out the coffee about a week and a half ago and I have noticed a little bit of energy bac but not where I think I should be.
Thanks Triple T for bringing this up!

I'd heard that sleep apnea can cause sleepiness during the day, to a dangerous point and that some sufferers get so bad they have to wear an oxygen mask in bed.

I read somewhere that apnea is often the culprit in chronic fatigue syndrome, and a lot of people don't know they have apnea. They don't wake up completely but are being constantly yanked out of REM, so their quality of sleep is very poor.

Good luck at the doc, Road. Let us know what he says.
