Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

I downloaded a paper today "Evidence-Based Treatments of Addiction" by Charles P. O'Brien (and I cannot reproduce here due to copyright). I had hoped it would say something helpful about baclofen. It only said that bac showed promised based on a study we already knew about. The interesting part was this: I had ordered modafinil in order to counter the side effects of somnolence and lack of focus produced by baclofen, so I was surprised to find modafinil written up as a promising treatment all it's own for cocaine. I am reproducing this part of the paper, and if someone comes and kicks my butt for it, so be it:

"Another recent novel approach involves modafinil, a drug that produces alerting via a complex mechanism involving enhanced glutamate activity. As mentioned in paragraph, BLOCKADE OF EUPHORIA, modafinil partially blocks cocaine-induced euphoria in the laboratory. In a randomized clinical trial, Dackis reported that modafinil-treated subjects significantly reduced their use of cocaine when compared with placebo-treated subjects (Dackis et al. 2005). Modafinil is currently under intense investigation as a potential first-line treatment for cocaine dependence . . . Given these findings, the pharmacological reversal of cocaine withdrawal symptoms with agents such as modafinil may improve clinical outcome (Dackis et al. 2005)."

My thought is that if modafinil can successfully counter the side effects of high dose baclofen - and can produce an anti-craving effect of it's own, this could be a boon to a to me and maybe others. I know nothing about medicine, it's possible side effects, contraindications, or other risks and am NOT posting this as advice or suggestion, merely as something to think about. The full paper is available here:

    Evidence-Based Treatments of Addiction -- O'Brien 9 (1): 107 -- Focus

My modafinil probably won't be here for another week or two. I'll post an update about how it effects me.

Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

I was on provigil for about a year. It didn't work on my cocaine cravings, but that's not to say it won't work for someone else.

But I love your theory that it could counter the SE's of bac. You think outside the box, my friend. The only potential drawback could be the cost. If I remember correctly, it was expensive.
Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.

Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

hmmmm. After seeing your post about it on your thread, Tracy, I got very excited and went to pubmed to get some more info.

      It's habit forming.
It's got a lot of the same SEs as bac. I wonder if it would exacerbate those sides?
It's contraindicated for people with a lot of the things we often have: depression, mania or psychosis. (I have experienced all three, some rather dramatically, on high dose bac.)
Also, heart, liver and kidney disease.
Also, of course, you shouldn't drink while taking it. :H

There is a larger issue, though. No-one really knows what is contraindicated with high-dose-bac-treatment, because the FDA approval is only up to 80mg/day. The way we take bac is to make significant changes in our brain chemistry, not to relax spastic muscles.
Modafinil is contraindicated with a lot of the common drugs used to treat comorbidities of alcoholism. SSRIs, benzos, MAO inhibitors and much, much more.
Be careful my friend. Eyes on the goal. Trust me when I tell you that the fuzzy-headedness doesn't last, nor does the sleep disruption.
Quite the opposite. The clarity and focus I have now astonish me. My sleep is a beautiful respite and I can't wait for it to be over so I can greet the day!

Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

I sometimes took modafinil while on very high doses of baclofen when I was sleepy and had to work. It perfectly counteracts the somnolence as expected. The abuse potential of modafinil is pretty low compared to stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin. It mainly does what it should: Reduce the need for sleep. Side effects were very tolerable, a little bit nervousness when I took higher doses. There was just a minor increase in blood pressure and pulse rate.

For cocaine and amphetamine abusers the combination of baclofen and modafinil could act synergistic to reduce cravings. Modafinil does not reduce the urge to drink alcohol so the combo will likely not produce better results here.

Thanks, Ne. If it only helps with the apnea, that would really be something! That is by far the worst side effect I'm having now. It can be quite severe.

I will be careful and I very much appreciate your concern.

As it is, one member already had some on hand but had not thought to use it while on baclofen. I am anxious to see what affect it has on him.

Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

Hi Tracy: Just one teeny-tiny thing to say about modafinil. I use it, so it's not a precaution against using it; however, know that it is likely to increase your blood pressure. It certainly does mine when I take it and I believe it is listed as a possible side-effect. That's all. Good luck.

Thanks, RedThread. I haven't had a problem with high-blood pressure. Hopefully, it won't be an issue. I am really looking forward to trying it, but I will be very careful.

Modafinil Bac - Could be a Double Whammy

                  Hi Tracy.

I was on Modafinil for a while for ADD/Daytime sleepiness. It had some positive effects on the sleepiness, but it made me nervous and gave me headaches.

Still got a bunch of em. Thinking I might try one today to counteract the bac sleepies.

I don't think the headaches are a common side effect by the way, I was just unlucky with that one.

Started baclofen on February 16th. Now at 210mg divided into six doses per day. You do the math.

Thanks, Edo. I talked to the doc. He said that the two meds will not interact and it's okay to try it on an "as needed" basis. He is curious to see how it affects the bac treatment also.
