    Side effects of AA

Sheri;1077493 wrote: Could things be done better in AA? Absolutely, but I don't believe that AA kills people..

We're going to have to agree to disagree on that one..

AA clearly doesn?t work for everyone but neither does medication or MWO or SMART . . .
Well, if such a thread existed critiquing SMART, there would not be all this drama or criticism of the thread because it does not hold "golden calf" status. I think such a post would be ignored.

Also, SMART simply is not harmful. AA is harmful to a lot of people. The incredible energy exerted on this thread in its defense is proof in itself of what a powerhouse it is, IMO.

I'm glad you found your way out, you sobriety tart.

Sorry, X Post, John - your response goes before mine I think.

I'm very health conscious and never stopped to think about alcohol on a deep level as it pertains to a healthy body (until now). Teaching me this in high school or college would have been much more beneficial than a lot of what I was taught! I don't know, maybe they're just now understanding the link to cancer.

I believe that some of the advice I received in AA was profoundly damaging.

AA clearly doesn?t work for everyone but neither does medication or MWO or SMART or therapy or whatever else is out there for us to try. I personally used a multi-faceted approach for myself and believe that?s what gave me the best chance to succeed thus far.

However AA tend to present themselves as the only game in town. Rarely are alternatives offered or suggested.

Thats, talllaght man. My neck of the woods. You really want to spend your days at AA meetings with a guy who got a suspended sentence for molesting a 5 year old child?
I find this post totally inappropriate. Just because one man was an alcoholic and a pedophile does not mean that every man who attends AA is. Longshot, you are completely out of line here. I know several men who are and have been members of AA and sober for many, many years. And they are fine, loving family men and an example to others since finding sobriety. They have shown that this disease can be beaten and that an alcoholic can get and stay sober and go on to live a healthy and productive life. You have no right to throw them all in the same pot and claim that they are all perverts just because of one man.
Sobriety can be achieved by many ways. I've been reading the posts on this thread and I am appalled by the intolerance of some posters towards the beliefs and methods of others and I am appalled by the sarcasm and meanness that I see in so many posts. If it's Baclofen or Topamax or whatever substance that works for some, then good for them. If AA works for some, then why bash it? If you don't believe in it, don't go to the meetings. If you've managed sobriety by means of your own self-will and the support of people on forums such as MWO, then who has the right to tell you your way is wrong? Besides appalling, I find it very sad that the MWO forum has gotten to this stage. Members lashing out at others because they are using a different method to find or cling to their sobriety. This is supposed to be a support forum and at the moment, it is very far from that.

My mistake. I confused you with someone who has "sobriety tart" in her sig line, someone else who uses a pastiche of methods in her sobriety journey. I think maybe it's CF. Certainly no offense was intended.

Where has any member here lashed out at any other member here because of their choice of method? You people keep coming in and posting this stuff. I keep asking: show me proof. So far, not one person has. So, DarkOrchid, please show me where any member of any method was *attacked* because they chose that method. I think what you will find is a lot of criticism of AA, the institution. An awful lot of people take that criticism personally, but that is their deal. If you don't like the thread, why on Earth read it? I cannot imagine a scenario where I would drop in on an AA thread and insist that the thread should not exist.

Did I say anything of the sort? Read my posts, and re read there. Where? Exactly Where? Do I suggest that every AA male member is a paedophile?

Longshot, you are completely out of line here.

But I never suggested anything like what you are accusing me of.

Well my issue with this gentleman is that the case was heard in my local court house, and he would have attended AA meetings in my local.

The idea that I think all AA members are paedophiles, is incredibly bizarre and as tasteless as your font colour choice.
