    Anyone tried phenibut or ad's

I wanted to ask if anyone here has tried using phenibut to stay off the booze. Also I wondering if any antidepressants can help with craving in any way that anyone knows of. I take citalopram 60mg a day right now but am going to ask my doctor about combining this with wellbutrin tomorrow because I know my depression and anxiety can end up in my picking up a drink again. I am 2 weeks AF today.

spacebebe, congrats on two weeks! I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with the meds you are asking about - but wanted to say "BRAVO" on the two weeks.

      Space,

There used to be discussions here about Phenibut many years ago. Not sure about recently.

      xTexan tried it, I think..

If you do try it and find it helpful, please post.

I recall, though, it only works for a while and then loses efficacy.

      Kind of like alcohol. :-)

Glad you are here and big congrats on two weeks sober!! Keep it up and :welcome:

I've tried phenibut, but not the way I use baclofen. I was worried about tolerance and addiction, so I only used 0.5-1.5 g two or three times a week in the evening. It felt remarkably similar to the way baclofen did the first time I used it. It made me very restless, so that I couldn't sit still. I was afraid to take it in high doses because of the horror stories I heard about the hangover. It didn't seem to make me drink any less.

I have also taken Paxil for SA twice. It did help with the SA when I got the dosage right, but it didn't help with cravings at all. I couldn't stay AF long enough to give it a proper try. It decreased my nausea threshold once I started drinking heavily again, so that throwing up in the shower multiple times was part of my daily routine. I got hypnic jerk really bad too. Definitely don't take ADs if you are currently drinking.

I was prescribed many antidepressants during my drinking career, due to depression and anxiety being pre-existing problems. Unfortunately none that I tried helped, but that's just me. Many others probably do benefit. It all comes down to individual reactions to these drugs according to my addiction specialist. Having said that, most antidepressants don't actually have much of a record as alcoholism treatment methods when used by themselves. I recall having looked this topic up many times while still drinking and no particular antidepressant seemed to stand out as having helped all that many alcoholics stay sober. Even so, almost anything is worth trying as a way of ditching alcohol.

I was going to try phenibut too but ended up getting scared off by the stories about its quick tolerance. For some reason that nobody has yet seemed to explain, phenibut and baclofen are different when it comes to tolerance, even though both act as GABA(B) agonists. I'd guess that phenibut must also affect the brain in some additional way. There are some reports about it also affecting GABA(A) receptors, so maybe that's where the tolerance comes from. Even many drug users seem wary of phenibut.

I don't know about phenibut, but Wellbutrin did help me a ton. I cut down on my booze but never stopped entirely. My psych told me that Wellbutrin works very well for people who abuse alcohol. Again, congrats girl. That is absolutely awesome!

P.S. One A/D I wasn't tried on is bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) and it works differently to the others on the market so it could help some who have not benefited from the rest. I haven't seen any information saying that it actually helps in alcoholism, just pointing out that its mechanism of action is different. The only reason I wasn't prescribed it is due to it not being approved as an antidepressant in this country for some reason; it is only approved for smoking cessation treatment, and even then only as a short course. Also I have never taken MAOIs so can't comment on them either. Like other antidepressant types, bupropion and MAOIs can both have various side effects, but it all comes down to how the individual reacts to them.

P.S. Sorry redhead, we posted together apparently and just happened to be thinking about Wellbutrin at the same time. Very interesting to hear that information about it!

Thanks for the replies, I am definately going off the idea of even trying phenibut but still going to try to talk to my doc today regarding the wellbutrin.

Spoke to my doc,Wellbutrin isnt licenced here as an antidepressant only as a stop smoking aid and then it isnt really used as champix is used instead so no joy there. Still AF though and still going to continue reserching and perstering my doc until I find what is best for me. I have been looking at ordering baclofen on-line (no way my doc will prescibe it for me) but am getting worried about the whole situation of buying on-line, running out of baclofen, side effects, maintenace dose and withdrawals, so intend to carry on reading posts and try to find out more. Anything has to be better than returning to al though which s definately killing me so still keeping an open mind to any help I can get. Thanks

RE combining your SSRI with wellbutrin: There's no problem (AFAIK) mixing the two classes of ADs in fact lots of men are prescribed wellbutrin to counter the retarded ejaculation SE of prozac.

You can buy wellbutrin on line if you can't get it from your GP.

I am going to go back and ask my doc again if he will prescribe the wellbutrin as a smoking cessation aid for me and try to get it that way. I am unemployed right now so money is short but have been looking at the cost of bac on-line, dont think I can afford to buy both on-line.
