    Scot started Baclofen

I haven't posted for a few months, though have been reading the threads fairly regularly.
Been taking Naltrexone now for 14 months as in the sinclair method and although I never experienced the benefit some have on Nal, it certainly has stopped my addiction from worsening which is more than can be said of any treatment I have had on the NHS........which is not difficult given my experience!

I started bac in January and was at 40mg a day but stopped after three weeks due to a health problem which I put down to bac, though I am sure now it was not related.
So now back up to 40mg in two days, no real side effects except a mild vacant feel? hard to describe but it's not a problem.
I have put off taking bac for sooo long now due to fear of side effects! Interesting that I drink around 130 UK units a week and smoke but I am scared of side effects of a drug that could in effect save my life!
I am currently taking pacifen, bought online as my GP stated that in no way would he prescribe me baclofen, even under direction from Dr Chick who is an addiction specialist here in the UK.

Best of luck Scot, you might want to get to Dr Levin who helps people use baclofen correctly.

Welcome back aboard the bac train, Scot. That's not the first time I've heard about GP's in the UK being unwilling to prescribe even with Chick's approval. Otter got around that somehow, and he does have a GP who will prescribe up to 150 mg through NHP. Might want to PM him and ask about it.

I am well and truly in recovery, I thank Baclofen, the good people of MWO and my love of spirituality, the combination of which have helped to guide me out of the darkness in the last couple months. Cheers to that.

Thanks all I plan on taking it fairly slowly from here on, and I am drinking so will be interesting. I just need to make sure I stock up on bac so I don't run out.

Well that was me on 60 mg, bailed out again today as the SE's were not getting any better.I did try go up to 80mg but popping all those pills at the right time was difficult, particularly when I was busy at work, so I ordered 25 mg tabs and one 25mg tab floored me on a single dose, thankfully at the weekend so I just went to bed.

It's funny how some days seemed not so bad and others I felt spaced out and very tired, possibly due to my inconsistent dosing I expect.

To be honest not sure where to go with this now. I got to 40 mg no problem but thereafter things got more difficult. I had to reintroduce naltrexone as my AL consumption was increasing on bac.....strange maybe, but true.
The other interesting SE was an increase in anxiety! I did not get the reduction in anxiety that so many report, even in small doses........I always knew I was odd!

Anyway will have a think now on whether to give it another go in future or just try white knuckle abstinence again.ants:

                  Cheers

                    Scot,

I am sorry it didn't work out for you. I truly believe, though, that there are people who cannot do Baclofen because of the SEs.

As has been posted ad nauseum by some here, OA didn't suffer some of the SEs others have.

You know what you can and can't do.

It sounds like you are taking Naltrexone, though. Are you up to trying TSM?

This addiction is so hard to beat. I am "white knuckling" myself as I titrate up. I can't stand the SEs of drinking and doing Baclofen.

Keep posting, Scot. Your story is important to all.

                    Love,
                    Cindi

                      Thanks Cindi,

I followed TSM religously for over a year, the first 2 months were amazing, but sadly increased almost back to original levels after this. On the plus side though Nal did stop progression and drinking on it was way better than before I started.

Yeah I am really not sure about Bac for me, I haven't given up but going to take a break....again, and maybe make an appointment with Dr Chick and see what his views are.

I think you may be doing this right Cindi by not drinking while increasing your dose, I may have to try it this way in future.
Best of luck to you, I am sure you will get there!

My advice would be to keep at a lower dose longer and spread it out through the day as evenly as possible. It took my wife 18 months to hit the switch and there is still work to be done. It is a long hard slog for some people. The side effects do go away. The anxiety is likely to be a withdrawal effect because you may not be taking enough. When you feel that way take more Bac.

                        Just a suggestion

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Sorry to hear that you're having to try a different route.

I'm truly a bac convert so glad to see that you are going to continue investigating the possibilities of baclofen. I think as Otter, pointed out, that its just a case of finding a way around or through the SEs. Maybe with Dr Chick supervising you this will be more likely.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Thanks all, I will give bac another go but will work out a dosing schedule and try and stick with it.
I do believe this stuff works, as is evident by many on here, so going to stay positive about it.
