    Beneficial side effects of Baclofen

I thought I would start a thread about the positive side effects I have noticed with Baclofen.

Here are some. I will add some more when I think of them.

This is the behaviour which Baclofen has changed:

Obsessive compulsive behaviour has gone, ie., buying clothes every day until the whole floor of a bedroom was covered with shopping bags of clothes which took three hours at Marks and Spencers to return for refund.

Violence. Reduction in violent outbursts which had resulted in broken windows, ornaments, remote controls.

Stops self harm. Stops incidents of self inflicted harm such as wrist slashing, attempting to jump off piers, cliffs, jump into water, stand in front of buses, wander into traffic.

Ends drinking binges lasting 8 to 10 days followed by days of recovery on librium.

    Largely eliminates PMT symptoms.

    Eliminates depression.

    Eliminates fear.

    Aids sleep.

Gives a general sense of well being and optimism about the future.

Allows one to cope with considerable stresses and anxiety.

Sharpens the mind, allows one to focus on things, rather than being distracted by anxious thoughts.

Better relations with family and neighbours.

    Increases confidence.

    Reduces irritability.

    Reduces speaking volume.

    Better sex!

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Wow Otter, if half of those things happen to me after my struggle with titration I would be in heaven. Can it be true? I must admit I am a skeptic as far as beneficial effects of bac.

      Hi Otter,
I think it is a very scary, dangerous SE.

Much more even temper; I no longer feel the need to get my retaliation in first.

The only beneficial effect of baclofen for me is indifference to alcohol and the way it makes drinking less than pleasant. I still get anxious and worried, but I am *unable* to use alcohol to cope with it. I think that that's a good thing. I wonder if some people are attributing beneficial effects of booze abuse-free living to the mechanism of baclofen itself????? -tk

I noticed a reduction in anxiety and some improvement in wellbeing even at a low dose (25 mg). It also seemed able to reduce tiredness for a few hours when I was tired due to lack of sleep the previous night.

                Hi Terryk
                You're right.
I have experienced all the + Otter has mentionned during long AF periods. It was even better than on AF due to bac periods.

Was the elimination of fear scary and dangerous then too? Or just because of the baclofen?

I've experienced many of the SEs mentioned by Otter to more or less extent depending on where I was in my titration/taper.

The overwhelming one is the reduction of violent response, physical or verbal. This is what sold me originally on the idea of baclofen as a treatment and is without doubt a positive influence for me and my surroundings. Mostly now I don't get near to feeling backed into a corner where the only sensible thing to do is lash out. Well before that happens, I can see alternative options. I say "mostly" because I have noticed that I've become a bit more of my explosive/unreasoning self since reducing to a maintenance dose of 90mg, but this has only manifested itself in being snappy! I'm working on it!
Started Baclofen 3/9/10 Hit my switch at 250mg on 21/11/10 Present maintenance dose of 50mg : started drinking after 1 year, upped dose to 80mg and stopped: Tapered to 30mg, started 6 months of drinking, upped dose to 240mg to stop 12/7/12

Ditto Otter on shopping, fear, anxiety, optimism, stress . . . and sex!

Would add that bac has allowed me to utilize self-managment "tools" that I never got back to even during three years sober without it.

And, within 2-3 weeks after starting bac I picked up my professional work at a level and pace that exceeded what I was able to do even before I became "alcoholic," - when I wasn't drinking at all. Nada, nothing, ever, for at least a decade.

Makes sense - peer to peer counselling can be remarkably effective! (I say that as an M.A. in English . . .)
