Beneficial side effects of Baclofen
Otter;1101671 wrote: I thought I would start a thread about the positive side effects I have noticed with Baclofen.
Here are some. I will add some more when I think of them.
This is the behaviour which Baclofen has changed:
Obsessive compulsive behaviour has gone, ie., buying clothes every day until the whole floor of a bedroom was covered with shopping bags of clothes which took three hours at Marks and Spencers to return for refund.
Violence. Reduction in violent outbursts which had resulted in broken windows, ornaments, remote controls.
Stops self harm. Stops incidents of self inflicted harm such as wrist slashing, attempting to jump off piers, cliffs, jump into water, stand in front of buses, wander into traffic.
Ends drinking binges lasting 8 to 10 days followed by days of recovery on librium.
Largely eliminates PMT symptoms.
Eliminates depression.
Eliminates fear.
Aids sleep.
Gives a general sense of well being and optimism about the future.
Allows one to cope with considerable stresses and anxiety.
Sharpens the mind, allows one to focus on things, rather than being distracted by anxious thoughts.
Better relations with family and neighbours.
Increases confidence.
Reduces irritability.
Reduces speaking volume.
Better sex!
I can relate exactly to the items in bold above...exactly.

Beneficial side effects of Baclofen
Yesterday my daughter sprung a surprise visit on me. ( In the last few years, the visits have been...well, I'm sure you can all imagine what they were like! Let's just say I feared for her life. ) She bounced in with flowers from her garden and warm hugs. A short and sweet visit, but considering where she's been at, it felt like a miracle. I am proud of her taking the bac journey, and perservering with SE's. Her drinking is a lot less and the family are enjoying the good benefits of bac. as listed here by Otter.
I dont know where the journey will finish, but daily, I am enjoying the good SE's.
hang in there all, and be the blessing to others you always desired to be! And thanks to those of you who have pm'd and supported us.

Found this from back in the days:
ignominous;971705 wrote: I also see some amazing positive SEs
1 Optimism (first time in log time with regard to my future)
2 Thoughts are of better quality. Rather than get caught up in my old destructive thought patters, I can circumvent them and actually think on a reasoned level. Maybe adult level ("I'm OK, your OK" anyone read that book)
3 Patience. I'm becoming saint like in by ability to look beyond the immediate.
4 Eat less but more frequently. Good or bad, I don't know.
5 Sleep less at the beginning but now I'm up to about 5 hours a night which is about usual. But I sleep in two 2.5 hour shifts. Strange. However I'm sure the quality of sleep is better. More REM or something. Even on small amounts I feel refreshed.
6 Unfortunately lower libido
7 My buzz hangovers, heightened by bac are like my face has swolen up.
8 Pins and needles when I wake up (due to heart slowing down?). I think I'm a good candidate for a heart attack so a little worried about this .Started Baclofen 3/9/10 Hit my switch at 250mg on 21/11/10 Present maintenance dose of 50mg : started drinking after 1 year, upped dose to 80mg and stopped: Tapered to 30mg, started 6 months of drinking, upped dose to 240mg to stop 12/7/12

Good thread Otter. I hope you have a good holiday, and that neither of you get run over.
I noticed most of the effects you listed, barring the PMS one. Many of them, I still feel, despite the SE's having worn off. I have lost my road rage, which used to be one of my defining features. I am much more efficient at work than I used to be.
At first, I thought that baclofen had made me whole again, but it has done more than that. It has actually made me more than I used to be. I am grateful. I actually forget the major effect, which Cindi pointed out. It helps me not drink.

Yep. I would agree with most of those positives. But before anyone starts thinking this stuff'll turn you into a saint:
I still can't stand it when people in front of me aren't in a hurry, because I always am. grrrr. I haven't pulled out a big gun to deal with Ma and Pa on a Sunday drive in the left lane since I started bac. But I hadn't done that before either. I still honk, though, and then feel bad about it for a split second.
Also not sure I'm not a little less pleasant when I'm pmsing. But given the fact that I'm normally so mild-mannered it shouldn't really matter.
I'm not convinced that it eliminates fear or depression for me. I am still wary of spiders, but I can kill them now. I don't even need the long handled vaccuum for the purpose. But I prefer it. My fear doesn't seem to be irrational, anymore, though. (Still not sure I'm willing to risk swimming in the ocean, though. Sharks are scarier than spiders.)
A lack of ice cream in the freezer last night made me irrationally idepressed. And in all seriousness, I think depression may be an SE, for some people. It may also be alleviated (in my case) by an adequate, regular, regimen of bac. Time will tell.
hmmm. What else? the sex! I'll save that for another thread. I don't think it's the sobriety factor, alone, though.
And you didn't mention the 'high' from exercise, which I'd not experienced in the same way, pre-bac.
