    Planning to try TSM Naltrexone

Open thread. Any input will be appreciated.

I have been an MWOer for nearly 5 years. I still drink although not nearly as much as I did when I first landed here.
I have been a daily drinker for 30 years, as the years went by my consumption went up as my tolerance did.
With persistence over 4 1/2 years or so, I have gone from drinking almost 3L wine daily for more than 15 years to drinking roughly 1 - 1.5L X 3-4 times a week.

My GP has agreed to treat my with Nal as long as my liver tests are good.

I saw a few threads on TSM here at MWO (most of them old)and know of the TSM forum, but because this site has more members, would like to hear from those who have tried it and whether or not they think it's worth trying.

    Thanks
    K

Oh, and I do relapse to drinking full weeks at a time, however I now manage to get a grip on it much easier and within a shorter time span than before.

      Hi Katie,
I too have been at MWO forever, and still struggle, quite a bit actually. I would like to learn more about Naltrexone. I did the Topamax briefly when I first got into MWO, but didn't stick with it, partially due to cost but a few other things as well.
Keep us posted, and good luck.

        Katie,

I posted this elsewhere but I don't recommend you even broach TSM with your doctor. She will give you a prescription that will cover daily use. You will just end up with more pills than you need.

It is highly unlikely that she knows anything about TSM and will not want you to try it.

        HTH,

          Hi CS (oldtimer)

I will post on my progress once I get started, from what I understand this process will take many months before noting a distinct difference. I will ask my GP to let me try TSM til year end.

Cindi, I posted this in subs today. BC is the province of British Columbia.
I truly believe my GP will listen to me and treat me accordingly. Well at least I hope so.

(Heidi Furrer, adult addiction counsellor with SHARE Family and Community Services, said alcohol is one of the worst drugs when it comes to physical health.

On April 1, B.C. became the first Canadian jurisdiction to recognize alcohol addiction as a chronic medical condition. The aim is to emphasize preventative measures while giving family doctors more resources to treat patients with alcohol problems.

“It takes a bit of stigma away from a person who says, ‘It’s a moral issue. You just have to have willpower,’” Furrer said.

“It’s a step up from the moral model to the disease model.”

Each area in B.C. has a government-funded agency that offers help for alcohol problems. Services can include individual and group counselling sessions, detox, rehab and out-patient clinics.

“We believe that recovery is individual,” Furrer said. “There are many paths to recovery.” )

                Cindi,
My GP is one in a million. She is open minded, caring, stern, and has a dry, no nonsense attitude( haha, she's British). If I ask her about something and she doesn't know, she researches it and gets back to me. I am blessed to have her looking after my well-being.

                    Hi Katie,

I know very little about Naltrexone, I just wanted to wish you luck. You seem to have had plenty of it when it comes to finding a doctor, yours sounds like every doctor should be. Sadly, as you say, one in a million.

Please let us know how you get on.

                        Thanks Bleep and Greg.
I know a lot of people in here are having terrific results using Baclofen. I did ask my Dr. about it too, but she had never heard of it being used for treatment of alcohol abuse and preferred to first treat me with Naltrexone and see how that goes. She has never prescribed this medication for alcohol dependency, so this will be new for her as well. I am hoping she buys into the TSM, I think she will, as she really is open minded.

Looking forward to Thursday, wish me luck on my liver function tests!

Katie, give it a go,there really is something to the Sinclair Method.
I'm in my eight month and now only drink once a week purely habit when we go to a party.
My advice is to not overthink it for the first few months and then just gradually think about cutting back.I realize I should have done this at month 4 when the wine and vodka tasted awful but I found if I drank more,it eventually tasted good and the buzz followed.
So a few months down the road, you have to put a little work in just breaking the habit.
                          Cheers Phoenix1

                            Planning to try TSM Naltrexone

                            Hi Katie,

I just finished week 3 of Naltrexone. I was able to ask my new doctor (who I originally went to to prescribe me Topamax) to prescribe it and she did. She wasn't familiar with it but I sent her links from the thesinclarimethod.net site and brought a copy of my book, The Cure for Alcoholism, with me to my appointment.

There's great info on the TSM site and great support as there is here, on the MWO site.

I'm down a bit from my pre-TSM drinking but also know that it is a long process so I'm riding the ride. The only negative I have had is a terrible hangover one day. Now, I make sure to watch what I'm doing and I track all my drinks.

Good luck! I'm feeling very hopeful about it for myself.

Thank Phoenix1, so nice to hear good advice from someone having success with TSM.

Thanks Doyourdream, I've been reading the boards over at the TSM website to get a better understanding of the process and what changes are to be expected along the way.

I have a good feeling that it will work for me too!
