    NAL disaster

i finally decided to try NAL last night and had the most awful experience. i dont know if it was the nal but it was the only thing i did differently.
ive been pretty worried about taking it so i only took half a tablet (25mg). i took it at 5.30pm about an hour before driinking, i was at home with wine. now i dont know if it was all in my mind, wishful thinking, but i think i drank more slowly, less great urgency to neck it as fast as possible. by the end of the evening i had drank about the same as i normally would on a binge, about 2 bottles of wine. as usual i cant remember much after the first bottle so i cant say how i was feeling.
i woke up this morning about 5.30 am feeling awful, shaking, very fast pulse, and began vomiting (in my cat litter tray,,,, poor kitty)
this continued for about 3 hours, i couldnt hold even water down and i couldnt get out of bed. i really felt like i was dying.
i always feel rotten the next day, and often stay in bed, but this was different. i havent vomitted from drink for about 2 1/2 years, and even then it was very rare. and i havent had shaking/withdrawal symptoms for well over a year.
it seems crazy to think that the nal has caused this as i only took half the usual dose, but everything else i did was the same as usual when i drink.
has anyone else had an experience like this? any suggestions what my have happended?
im really scared to try nal again as this was just so awful.
Today is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine

Sorry you had a rough time Spuddleduck. Some people have experienced vomitting on Nal - I think Taw posted she was sick when she took her first dose a few days ago(it's on her 'trainwreck' thread. I took Nal for 5 days before I first drank on it (although I did once try a 100mg dose mid binge some weeks before without effect), I did notice I feel nauseous for a couple of hours after I've taken it but am fine after that. Some say you need to take it a few times to get used to nal, you could try taking 25mg on a non-drinking day to see what happens then?

Hey Spuddle....I did vomit for 12 hours straight after my first dose...but I have taken 3 times since then and no problems at all!! And I did only take half of one and did not drink on it because if was vomiting!

I know the last thing you want to do is try it again but I did and was fine!

I know several others have said to take it with food, perhaps try that?

        Hi Spuds!

I took Nal for the first time last week, and I thought I was going to die. Seriously. It was horrible, and I only took 25 mg. The next night I took half that amount, and it was still terrible, but by the third time it was fine.

I have since discovered that this is not unusual at all. Hang in there! And good luck. :l

              ergh!, spuds.
good advice above. food sounds like a good approach. i took it once or twice with no ill effects except drinking wasn't enjoyable anymore so i stopped. imagine that! ...oh, and it made me feel kinda angry, or maybe i was just feeling angry? but i think you should plow on, with food, too, and let it do its magic. seems many are having good luck with it.
              good luck to you!

thanks for the info. i thought i had read up quite a bit about nal, obviously not enough as i wasnt expecting this reaction. at the moment i dont feel i want to risk it, but as has been suggested i may try 25g with food and no alcohol, just to see how i feel. i dont think ill be trying it for a few days tho, or drinking as i still feel pretty washed out from my lovely morning puking. have to admit i havent been able to face cleaning the sicky cat litter...... o dear poor kitty will have to find somewhere else to go.
thanks again, ill will do some more research on this reaction

                  Hi spuds
Sorry you had such a lousy reaction to the nal, I hope you give it another try. One good rule is to make sure you take it after eating a meal, at least one hour before you drink. I think that helps lessen the side effects. Starting at 12.5mg and working your way up slowly over a week might help too.

                      Hi Spuddle,

I didn't have terrible SE from Nal but have had some TERRIBLE hangovers. It seems like it can intensify the reaction to alcohol.

As other have suggested, start more slowly, on a full stomach and maybe try to drink less. I haven't figured out a rhyme or reason to it. I've felt sick when I had what was my normal 5 glasses of wine per night (pre-Nal) but also felt just awful after only three glasses of wine one night but having drank the wine later than normal and in only a couple of hours.

Keep good notes on what you're drinking and how much.

I feel very hopeful about Nal for myself. I'm on week 8.

                      Good luck!

ive been on the tsm forum for more info. i know a lot of people get nausea and it seems there are just a few that get such a severe reaction. im still feeling a bit rough today but i guess thats just from throwing up so heavily.
im going to go with what has been suggested and try 12.5mg with food and see how i feel. today is a tempting day as far as drinking goes as its a 'super sunday'... bank holiday tomorrow. bit silly as i dont even go out drinking anymore.(and no booze in the house) ill just see how it goes.
Today is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine
