Naltrexone...I am my own science experiment/project.

I know I already posted about 14 hours ago (it was 10:00 am Sunday am, and I was drinking my 4th beer. I am 30 days into trying Naltrexone to curb my decades long heavy beer consumption-past 10 years; often 18-24 light beers per day, all the while working at my job).

So, cut to the chase...I am well aware of The Sinclair Method. But since I have been taking the Naltrexone, I tend to drink the same. With Naltrexone, I can drink all day and not really get drunk, can function much better, I don't black out at night or cause arguments with my wife, and I do not have substantial hangovers. So, it seems like so far Naltrexone is allowing me to continue to drink heavily without the bad consequences (aside from what I am doing to my liver). I am 48, and I really have to quit or greatly reduce this beer thing. Been drinking all day...am strangely buzzed, yet clear headed. No anger. The ability to be compassionate toward others and their needs without going off my rocker in drunken angry stupor.

So, I am just posting my experience if this science /experiment project called "The Sinclair Method." I would be interested in anyone else's expression of their experience with Naltrexone. I have been through outpatient rehab and to AA, but those have not worked. I gave it a try, but did not get well enough from it. I don't like AA. So, hey to you out there>

    oh yeah...

I just posted that I was having my 4th beer at 10:00 am this morning. It is now 11:52 pm, and I have probably had about 20-25 light beers today. Please factor that into my just posted thread (to which I am now adding today's result)

      Bud-Man...what is it?

I am bud-man. I have to wonder why there are no similar stories from others, as per my comments on my experience with Naltrexone (30 days now). Nobody can share? I apologize if I am not using this forum correctly.

      Peace,
bud-man (as in budweiser light mega consumption)

...just cracked open what I guess is about my 26th-30th (light) beer in the last 24 hours. Yes, I did sleep for around 5-6 hours last night.

        Hi Bud,

I am taking Naltrexone too for about 4 months now, but I am not following the Sinclair Method (although I'm seriously considering starting).

Did you have the "honeymoon period" in the first couple of weeks? I though nal was a miracle for the first couple of weeks but slowly I am drinking as much (and sometimes more) as before. I have read that if you have that period in the beginning then it is a good sign that it might work for you, but I'm not sure if thats true just thought I would mention it.

        Hang in there :-)

          Hey Bud,

I'm not using naltrexone, but I feel for you - we are all science projects here!

There is actually some solid science behind Nal. With protocols and recommendations, based on real research.

The Sinclair Method is one way, and you'll find a ton of info about it on their forum. (Not that you're not welcome to share here. I like it here, too! You might be able to find some real expertise/advice on the other forum, though. Which, again, I hope you will share here!)

But there is other more recent and more reliable research related to Nal that you can find with a good (time-consuming, probably) search.

I, for one, do not particularly like feeling like a lab experiment, and I hated drinking exorbitant amounts of booze, so I hope that helps. I also hope you are taking care of yourself to the best of your ability and have some real-life support. 25+ was no joke for me. (ouch!)

              Hi Bud
I'm in my 8th week of TSM and am seeing distinct differences in my drinking. My physician prescribes Naltrexone and is following my progress.

As I understand it, most people will be able to drink as they usually would for several months and then because of the extinction process that goes on in the brain, drinking naturally tapers off to acceptable levels. Chances are you will succeed with TSM as you are having more clarity while drinking, such as no blackouts, arguments, bad behaviour. If you can commit for at least 6 month to a year you should see a significant change. The Sinclair Method forum has a ton of info.

I may not be there yet, but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

Naltrexone...I am my own science experiment/project.

Hi Bud man, I took Nal for just under a year following the sinclair method and while it made it possible for me to function without deterioration in my drinking, I ended up drinking the same amount but without the blackouts, and general despair at my life.

My first 2 months on Nal were amazing to say the least, vastly reduced consumption, and could stop after a couple of drinks on many occasions. Sadly it didn't last this way but was still a great benefit in keeping me functional.

I do not believe the 78% success that sinclair reports I'm afraid, I would reverse those percentages to say a 22% success rate going by what I have read on the TSM forum and here.
I hope this doesn't come across too negative, there are many for whom Nal works amazingly and you may well be one of them.

                Best wishes

Naltrexone...I am my own science experiment/project.

I'm now in I think my 10th week with TSM and have already experienced a great deal of success. I will say this however, I believe you have to make an effort with it. Nal won't work if you fight it, and also some people fail because they stop taking it too.

I've just had a very busy week which involved a LOT of socialising and whilst I did not have any cravings, I did actually let myself get drunk once as well as drinking on days that I really wouldn't have if I'd not had simply been in these social situation. I drank too much even though Nal was doing it's stuff - although apart from the blow out(oohh a whole 15 units), I easily stuck to 1 or 2 drinks each night, so I know it's still working for me. My point is if you are determined enough you can drink over Nal, however I really want to avoid ever going back to the sorts of places alcohol has taken me in the past, so whereever possible I will put the drink down. I'm looking forward to a week without alcohol now (until Saturday night when I do have a night out planned), and have a good idea it's not going to bother me!

Nal works if you work it (sorry I know that's an AA-type saying but it's the way I think it is!), not everyone can and it doesn't work for everyone.
