    PROZAC INCREASED ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION?

    Hi All,
I just got a smack in the noggin!
I've been on Prozac for over 10+ years, I did some research reguarding prozac & alcohol.
Guess what- alot of people started craving alcohol after taking anti-depressants.
Now I'm not saying that is why I drank. But Man,I sure craved alcohol alot more after starting Prozac. Maybe it's time to stop the anti-depressants.......

    Any thoughts?????????

      PROZAC INCREASED ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION?

I noticed increased cravings sometimes when taking L-tryptophan, which is a serotonin precursor. It didn't happen straight away, but more usually during afternoons after having taken the tryptophan at night. I thought I was only imagining it, or it was a coincidence, but some of these cravings were very strong. They may have been related to me not taking this supplement in regular, several times a day doses, i.e. may have been due to low levels of it after taking it bunched up as a night dose.

I have no idea why this happened to me, but I thought I'd mention it due to the serotonin connection between tryptophan and SSRIs such as Prozac. I didn't manage to take any SSRIs for long due to being unable to tolerate increased anxiety and insomnia from them, so can't say how they would have affected me.

A lot of people mention that increased serotonin makes them feel a bit emotionally dulled or tired, so maybe these increased cravings are a desire to balance that with enhanced emotions and energy? Such an effect is what alcohol and other dopamine-increasing substances can do, so maybe that could explain it, or partly at least.

        PROZAC INCREASED ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION?

        Hi HaveFaith

I can certainly attest to this. I found that when I was on Prozac my cravings for alcohol skyrocketed ...but then after prolonged use I also found myself suicidal. Guess prozac just wasn't for me. I was much better after I stopped the prozac and my drinking levels certainly decreased (although not to any "acceptable" levels - which should be nil in my case .

I took Prozac for 5 years, looking back however my Clinical depression diagnosis did co-incide with a definite increase in my alcohol intake. At the time I thought it was because I was a student, and simply joining in with the rest of them. Thing is yes the others did go out frequently, BUT they only had half the amount to drink I did over the evening. After a year of sporadic problematic drinking I then decided I wanted to go out and try recreational drugs, which enabled me to stay up all night and drink around the clock when I did so.

I did stop taking Prozac voluntarily when I realised my drinking has escalated to the point where it was negating the anti-depressant effect completely. I had no problem cutting my dose down - which I think is exactly because the alcohol had stopped it working anyway, and I just carried on drinking more and more.

Sifting through all of this I decided I don't think Prozac influenced my drinking at all, I was already becoming happily addicted - to the point where I overrode the medication itself.

This effect has been noted in the past with Celexa in particular. Didn't know about Prozac, thanks for the heads up.

Hmmm, the opposite happened to me. The first time I used Prozac (for about a year) I found I had much more control over my drinking. Probably because I was calmer and more centred.

HF, 10 years on Prozac is a long time. Ignoring the booze for the moment, do you think it is still working as it first did? If it has become less effective (lots of people report that with long term use it does) then maybe it is time to get off it. Maybe try something else?

Also a couple of other ADs. It's a good idea to check 'em out! Good for you Faith! Imagine what effect your current treatment will have if the prozac is contributing to the problem and you're able to get off of it.

That said, do you have a doctor that can supervise that? I'd think that would be VERY important after 10 years, you know?

You know the Gyno originally put me on Prozac for my PMS.
So maybe its time to try goin off it and see how I feel.
I can relate to the alcohol + prozac= more dreppression(when my drinking was at its worst,I felt suicidal as well)
                  Thanks for everyones insight...........
