Thank you bruun - just re-reading it again
How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and there will never be a time when it is not now....

Gabapentin for Anxiety and Alcohol Abuse

Ive just recieved my order of gabapentin, but they are 400mg capsules, and Im worried this may be too high and how am I going to split a capsule without throwing any away? anyway as I dont feel too bad today and I really got them too take only on my worst days I dont have to worry about that, but in true addict fashion I want to take one now to see what they are like, I will wait tho as I am busy with family today and tommorrow and dont want to risk strange side effects.

Hi Space, you should open the capsule and empty half into a shot glass or napkin and take it that way. If its a tablet, split it. You don't want to take high doses of this unless an emergency. It CAN be abused although I found that the "high" I experienced happened only twice so it wasn't addicting in that regard. It was addicting in my wanting to be happy. Maybe I'll take on this AM, I'm feeling like shite and nope, not hung over!

Thanks Bruun, I did have it, I opened the capsule and poured half into a rizzla then put back capsule together, I took the half in the rizzla and did feel kinda high on it yesterday but also just kind of drifted through the day and did in fact feel quite happy in that I had a nice day with my son and his friend who stayed over, we made cakes and watched a film together, I slept well last night and havent taken any today but think I can still feel an effect from yesterday. I do get what you mean about wanting to be happy could well be addicting and dont think genuine happiness is a bad thing to want at all, who wouldnt want it!
How are you Bruun? ok I hope, let me know if you want a chat and I will put the kettle on, you will have to put your own kettle on tho I cant send tea on-line it might break my laptop

Gabapentin for Anxiety and Alcohol Abuse

Hi Space, I'm okay, still drinking but not a ton, still too much. I had more wine last night after my dad left, and have been awake all night with stomach upset. I didn't have enough to have a stomach upset, its this GI thing I've battled for the last ten years, it takes less and less alcohol to set it off. Sort of acts like antabuse that way, makes you regret each glass right after. None tonight, for sure.

Can't do alot of chatting online these days, I'm having repetitive motion issues with both hands and wrists so I tend to jump on and then right offline.

              Keep up the good work.

Sorry to hear about your health problems Bruun, its good your not having wine tonight tho, but total crap that you have been sick and also having probs with your hands and wrists. I hope you get a good nights sleep tonight and that helps you feel better tomorrow, I dont know if it will but not sleeping cant help. I wish I could be of some help. Take care

Wanted to bump this thread one more time. Perhaps Gabapentin does work for some?

Gabapentin for Anxiety and Alcohol Abuse

                        Hi.

It's likely that this isn't the best thread to use as an example of Gabapentin working to treat alcoholism. It didn't help Murphyx, and he went back to using bac. Bruunhilde is still drinking, even now. Same with wanttobesober. The rest were actually posting that they used it for other reasons, with varying (or no) impact on their craving.

You might want to check out Windycitylady's posts related to Gabapentin. She started taking it when she stopped taking bac, and found relief from anxiety from it. She's the only example I know of from MWO that found some success with Gabapentin.

I'm not saying that it doesn't work. I'm just saying that there are better places to look for info.

                            Some interesting recent news:

Gabapentin for alcoholism | Baclofen USA - In memory of Dr. Olivier Ameisen

I was perscribed this med for Back issues.... and then discovered the AL component. Very interested in how it will work in me. I've only been on it for 3 days. So far I can't say what it's doing because I am also on a muscle relaxer for my back spasms. But as soon as I'm off those (a couple of weeks) I'll have a good handle on how the Gabpentin is working in me.

I was given Lyrica starting about a year ago for treatment resistant depression. It actually seems to work which is a relief after trying virtually everything that seems to be available and none of it worked. The Lyrica seems to actually work. I have noticed that I also really have no interest in drinking any more! I even went on vacation and did drink a bit in moderation (something new for me having been a professional binge drinker for years) and after vacation I really just did not have any interest in drinking anything alcoholic. Very strange feeling, The only side effect that I have noticed (450 mg / day doseage taken in the evening) is that I sleep like the proverbial log. And, no desire to drink.

I tired Pregabalin (Lyrica) a long time ago recreationally. Very strange drug. I also had no cravings for booze but that was probably down to me being to whacked out to care. Weight gain is a big big SE of Lyrica. I know lots of people who stopped taking it because of this. Not sure how Gabapentin fairs. I've also heard that tolerance is a problem. Not sure how this would work out with taking high doses for cravings.
