Here goes- Texie's balcofen diary starts today

    Hi all,
Got my prescription on Thursday, picked it up yesterday and took my first 5mg. dose this morning. I have decided I'm going to do my best to remain AF as much as possible during the titration up as hopefully that will minimize any SE's. Watching GMA this morning with back to back stories on Amy Winehouse and Diane Schuler helped reinforce the dire need for me to do this.

Took the first dose a couple of hours ago and feel something not quite unpleasant but a little like the brain numbing effect of about 1/2 glass of wine. Hopefully this will pass as the day goes on or as the week goes on. Also, my front teeth feel a little numb, something I've never seen mentioned on here. Weird.

Your posts have been so very helpful already as I have been glued to this site and have read for hours the past few days. Looking forward to your support during my journey.

    Here I go,
    Tex

Good luck Tex. Think you might be a little early for the SEs but never can tell. Keep us informed!

Good luck, you can do it. I'm following Dr L's advice and am currently at 90mg/day split into 9 doses to help with the somnolence. I have been getting much better sleep at night though, just need to stay awake during the day! Otherwise, a very nice side effect is that I don't feel the anxiety that was always there on previous attempts to dry out. Before, it would be like I was a raw nerve and very uncomfortable for the first week (or however long I could manage to dry out, shorter and shorter periods lately). Now I'm a lot calmer and can actually talk to people, before I tended to be reclusive because of my problem drinking. I'm now at the stage of "can this be real, can I really be a normal person who is not constantly thinking about my next drink?" So far, it's a yes, and I am thrilled. I haven't had any of the bad side effects you may have read about in some posts. I will be going up to 110 on the 29th.

Hi ignominious, I seem to be very sensitive to medication but maybe I'm just expecting side effects and getting what I expect. We'll see, I did do some "farewell to AL" drinking the last few days in anticipation of starting today so maybe that has something to do with it too.

Glad to hear you're doing so well HIA. I met with Dr. L on Thursday and what a very nice man he is. I'm looking forward to not having the anxiety. Hope that's a SE that I DO get. Keep in touch I will look forward to hearing about how you're doing.

            Hey Texie.

Fingers are crossed for you. It could well be SE's at this point, who knows. Doesn't mean they will be bad though. I had funny teeth issues, my teeth felt numb, or more sensitive, I couldn't work out which. I spent ages running my tongue over them trying to feel the difference. Was quite pleasant, if I recall.

              Day 2

5 mg again today. There were definatly se's yesterday. Feeling a little weird, couldn't concentrate as good as usual but I'm not too worried about these yet. Slept great and no desire what-so-ever for al. As I said, I'm kinda sensitive to medication and when I started Prozac years ago (no longer taking it) I felt like I'd been hit by a truck for the first week. And when I started taking Welbutrin (also no longer taking) I felt like someone had snatched my brain the first few weeks but those se's went away and I'm confident these will too.

Thanks for the support and well wishes, I'll keep in touch.

              Tex

Sounds good, Tex. Gotta tell you that I found the SEs at the lower doses much more noticeable than I did after about 70mg. I may be getting a little ahead, but didn't want you to wander off...

What happens, happens. Hopefully you'll be as sensitive to the beneficial side of baclofen as well. As you say, nothing serious yet...

                    Hi Texie,

I too had many side effects on the lower doses. I felt I couldn't function and decided to take a hiatus from work when on just 30mg. If you can, don't focus on the SE's too much. They won't kill you. And we all know alcohol can and will. As long as you can find a way to work/live while doing this, plug away.

There's some saying about what you focus on becomes your reality. Titrating up, I stayed focused completely on the positive SE's of bac, and how soon my life would change, and magically, I had a wonderful ride (for the most part).

I wouldn't sweat the small SE's like numb teeth, but instead think of the big picture, like how soon you will probably be free from the alcoholic prison. Good luck!

Hi Tex. Que sera sera with the SEs but they are not dangerous or permanent. (caveat: don't operate heavy machinery or with a scalpel). Keep Dr L informed about the non-existence of the SEs: many of us would live to hear his thoughts.

Btw what dos HIA stand for?

                          Thanks Redhead and SP,

Not really focusing on the se's, they haven't been bad at all. Just making note of them. Today I actually didn't feel much in the way of se's at all. The foggy feeling was pretty much gone, actually felt pretty good, clear headed and in a good mood. Got a ton done at work. Had only one flash of craving when I was leavng work (my weakest time) but it was managable and I'm on DAY 2 AF. Yea!!!
