What odd timing - I was just wondering what happened to you. Hopefully you can try again when your schedule is better mang.

I have been lurking here for while lately and decided to finally post. I discovered MWO a few years back and was actively participating in some of the forums... I got a lot of support and encouragement (what a relief to just be able to talk about my problem with other people who have dealt with similar issues), but ultimately I was unable to quit drinking, and finally resigned myself to having to suffer this disease for the rest of my life... I continued to research possible medical "cures" for my dependency from time to time though, and became aware of baclofen. I purchased some via the internet a year or so ago and tried taking small doses to help curb my cravings, and although, somewhat effective, it wasn't enough to help me quit. I was reluctant to try and self medicate high doses of this stuff without any guidance though, but fortunately I rediscovered MWO and have been reading a lot of great success stories here (as well as a lot of pansy ass whining about SE's from people that used to guzzle gallons of booze every day ... wtf? ;}... Seriously though, I really appreciate all of the great information being shared here.

      I was able to deduce the identity of the mysterious Dr L and obtained a prescription and am now happily titrating up (please tell me that is pronounced Tie - Trate ;}

Anyway, I have been up for hours with insomnia (Yeah I know, what a pansy), and decided to post and say hey.

      Hey
About the side effects thing...it's funny that it feels ok to have side effects from alcohol, because almost everyone gives you permission, but if you experiment with large amounts of something that is not nearly as dangerous, you begin to feel anxious about anything that feels slightly not normal.

I'm so ready to jump back in and try this again. The timing was just not right for me this time...

All of my SE were sleep related, and got to the point were it was just too much... I felt like I was on the verge of having a seizure ... Crazy weird energy just spinning through my head and it would just zoom through my brain, and then my breathing would go all weird ... shallow panting.... then I could literally feel all of my pores open up, and sweat would just start pouring out... This keep me up for hours then I would finally go back to sleep and sleep normally for few hours.
Meanwhile I had this insane work schedule that included a trip to Europe for a really important recording session, and a ton of music still to write.... I had to stop the Bac and just go back to the booze for a bit... SE's More predictable

I want to give this another try, when work isn't so crazy because I think that was a big factor in all of the SE's I experienced

          bac again

          hey all,

just logged on again today and. Wow a bunch of new stuff happening here,,, DR A and Dr L are my heroes. I am planning on giving baclofen another shot soon. I think the stress of my last deadline was the biggest contributor to my side effects. So I am hopeing to have a couple of months of downtime where I can try this again in a more calm setting.

            Hi MusicMan

Glad you're going to try again. To help prevent sleep related SEs, take your final dose several hours before you go to bed. I take my last dose around 6 or 7 pm and don't usually go to bed before midnight. Now I have absolutely no sleep SEs.

In future, if you have SEs, tell us about them and maybe we can come up with suggestions...and possibly rib you about your "pansy ass whining".:H

p.s. did you ask Dr L for a xanax script? I don't have access to it or him, but those who do, swear by it. They say "shit yeah, xanax is fucking great" arf, arf!

              Thanks Murph,

I appreciate the advice! .... Still trying to finish up one or two bits of work from this last big crunch, and then I am hoping to have some downtime where I can figure this all out.

I have been logging on from time to time here, and getting a dose of moral support from just reading through some of the posts on the forum.

Hi MM: Here's how I titrated up to 240 mg baclofen/day and never lost a full night's sleep - which may have contributed to the fact that I never suffered from "somnolence" during the day. I am NOT recommending this, I'm just telling you what worked for me. It's probably a total no-no on the drug-interaction list, but I was already taking the med to help me sleep before I started baclofen, and just never quit. And, thank God, I sleep like a baby and wake up un-hungover. Every morning. It's a miracle!!

I take 50-100 mg quetiapine fumarate every night. Brand name - Seroquel. It's an anti-psychotic. Maybe I'm psychotic and that's why it works for me:H Actually, I read that it's often prescribe "off-label" for sleep. A psych prescribed it for me a long time ago when I was in a big bender and couldn't sleep at all, which made we want to drink to go to sleep, which made me wake up, which made me want to drink . . . know the feelin'?

I haven't tried Xanax. Would if I needed it, but Seroquel is the bomb for me. Just make sure you're in bed 1/2 hour after you take it And don't tell anyone who suggested it to you! What is it "they" say - there's more than one way to skin a cat? Eeww, what a yucky to say! Good luck.
