Had a couple interesting finds this week in regard to 2 SE's: Sore throat/coughing/post nasal drip. Weight gain.

For about 3 months I've had a sore throat that was getting progressively worse. This accompanied by postnasal drip. The past couple months been having periodic "episodes" of throat burning/stinging. When the episode is happening I can't talk because of the pain and throat spasming. My eyes are watering more like waterfalls. A nightmare when you have to talk alot in your job. The episodes went from occasional to constant. Also would wake up choking & coughing from the episodes coming on during sleep. Finally go to a throat specialist on Tuesday. Diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. (LPR) Since I'm seeing a doc in the same medical group as my shrink who prescribes the bac, he can see all my records. The throat doc says, bac is a muscle relaxant. It has relaxed a band of muscle at the entrance of the stomach known as the lower esophageal sphincter. If this band of muscle is not functioning well, you can have a backflow of acid into your esophagus and into your throat and voice box. The acid refluxes into your esophagus (or food pipe) and throat. It pools there causing problems. As of now, the acid reflux has severely burned my throat and I can't talk. I'm now on medication for the LPR. Must make other lifestyle changes like sleeping with head 6 inches up; no caffine & NO ALCOHOL! (Both these produce lots of acid); and weight reduction.

This gets me to the second revelation. Since getting to around 200 mg of bac I've gained about 20 lbs despite no change in eating, in fact thinking I was eating less. This throws me into a frenzied panic so I go into operation lose weight which I'm pretty good at. I follow the Atkins diet plan which is losing weight by eating less carbs. Typically, I'd see a 4-7 lb weight loss in a week. Nothing. So now I'm really freaked. I go to writing down everything I put in my mouth (except water). Every pill. Every morsel of food. And I reduce the carb intake. And I test my urine at least twice daily using a Keytone test strip. The strip will change from beige, to pink, to various hues of purple if you are in ketosis. Ketosis occurs when you are taking in low levels of carbs resulting in creation of ketones. When you are in ketosis you're burning fat stores for fuel and not gluclose. The by-products of burning fat are keytones. Even after being on a drastically reduced carb level, after 4 days the test strips are barely turning a pale pink. My revelation (but no solution to the problem): The bac therapy is hanging on to the gluclose (I think). I'll keep testing and see if it improves. For the record, my average carb intake per day is 10 grams and avg calorie intake is 750. As for the bac, I'm starting to dose down. Was up to 270. Now at 200. Perhaps the lower levels of bac will start to shake it loose. Still indifferent.

    Hey Hopeful

Sorry you are having a bad time, I can relate to some of what you describe. I too had the teary eyes, and it caused some problems for me at work. I did actually find it was worse when I was in contact with strong perfumes - either on myself, or other people (and that includes aftershave which these days is technically 'perfume' anyway).

I'm wondering if you wear heavy perfume this could be making this side effect much worse, or I could be off track completely.

The acid reflux sounds scary and to me if it's doing serious damage to your body then I'm not sure if that then tips the cost:benefit balance.

    Regards the weight, I struggled with that whilst on Baclofen too. Now usually a reduction in drinking, guarantees weight falling off me. On Baclofen I did have AF periods but still remained bloated. I put this down to two things;

Water retention (I was very puffy indeed)
Lack of motivation to train/eat well consistently

Baclofen made me depressed, lethargic and plain just wierd. This meant I spent a lot of time doing nothing, feeling rubbish and generally moping around. I was very sluggish also and all of this really wasn't conducive to a serious weight loss plan. Since reducing to low dose, occasional baclofen I have noticed a massive difference. Obviously you need to find the thing that works for you though. If baclofen is helping you stop drinking then that should be your first priority, but obviously if you are having medical complications as a result it might be an idea to look at your dosing levels.

Hi UKBlonde, It's a relief to hear that since going low dose it's made a massive difference for you. That's what I'm hoping for myself. Since reaching indifference at around 250, went to 270 then started dosing down and now at 200 mg. Plan to go down 10 mg every 3 days to a maintence level. Today's been the first day I've actually felt good since the dosing down phase began about a week ago. Interesting about the perfume but no, I don't wear perfume at all. Just occasionally. The waterfall eyes are a direct reaction to the stinging/burning throat muscle spasm. I can literally hear my eyes buzzing when its happening. Weird.

I was the opposite of you. At the higher dosages bac made me euphoric. I could think more clearly and coherently as evidenced by some of the work I produced during this phase.

I had the latter experience, too, Minne! I miss it...

I hate that this is going to sound pedantic, but... Bac causes nasal congestion and post-nasal drip. Have you tried an allergy med? In addition to the other stuff, I mean.

Please, please, please dont say this.

Just as I was thinking I had a cure for my alchohol addiction, I am now really seriously consdering stopping.

For the last 3 days I have had what I thought was a throat infection and sort of a chest infection. However, after reading this maybe I havent.

I have a persistant cough that is getting more productive but is still not really productive, occcasional green crap, but only first thing in the morning (sorry to be so graphic)it is like a constant tickle that wakes me up at night and a burning, searing throat, to the stage that last night I was almost in tears, however, today the throat isnt as bad, but I do feel sooooo groggy, I could sleep and sleep. I have constant post nasal drip.

Since being AF 6 days today, I have felt so depressed and miserable, but this also coincides with all of my family leaving after a lovely week together for my daughters wedding and the weather turning really grey.

I thinki what I am saying is that I am unsure as to what symptoms are being caused by the bac, the stopping al or the infection/cold (if it is that at all).

          Help!

Dude. (I use that as a gender-neutral, ftr, and completely affectionately, as Americans are wont to do.) When taking a medication that may alter your life in a beautiful and profound way, as well as extend it considerably, it is important to try to FIX the things that come up before you throw in the towel, right? Okay, lecture over. Sorry for that.

My non-doctor suggestion? Take some allergy medication. Claritin works for me. And I also take Mucinex. Not Mucinex D or any other letter... Claritin stops the drip. Mucinex helps it all loosen up so you can get it out. This will take less than 2 days. (I'm sorry I don't know what the names are in Europe.)

Also, the foggy-headedness? You're taking an awful lot of bac in a short period of time. Take it easy a bit, will you? Chillax. :H That's a bad joke. sorry. But really, it WILL get better... Really.

I didn't gain any weight. Many of us don't. That's good news, isn't it? Check out Lo0p's exercise thread! https://www.mywayout.org/community/f2...ise-39134.html

Keep going until you get to the pix. If you're a chick, you'll like 'em. If you're a guy, you'll want 'em.

                Thanks neva

I am not really going to stop just like that. Was just a bit exasperated, sorry!

Firstly, although I have been 6 days AF. I have actually been on bac for 4 weeks, so i dont think my titration schedule is that quick??

Also I am going to take the advice to go for 6 doses a day. Tomorrow I will go to the chemist and get the drugs you spoke about - thank you. How long do I have to take them for?

Think I went into blind panic mode when I saw this post - apologies guys!!

Okay, so here's the deal. I was officially diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal Reflux. (LPR). The throat specialist said this happens when the lower esophageal sphincterby (a muscle) is not functioning. It wasn't closing tightly enough to keep the acid from coming up into my throat. There's alot of reasons this can happen but in my case the bac has caused the sphincterby to relax too much so its not doing its job. This was coming on slowly for the past couple months until it became such a handicap finally went to a doc. I was prescribed prilosec. Already seen an improvement. When this started getting really bad I too thought it was allergies. I tried a series of meds--benadryl, zyrtex. I was also taking doxepin prescribed by my shrink for sleep so I asked my shrink if it was okay to to take them all together. He said doxepin IS an antihistamine and interestingly many antidepressants are.

bottlestopper--all your symptoms sound identical to mind. Another is it feels like there's something stuck in your throat. My advice is go see your doc or throat specialist and find out for sure. If you don't great. If you do you can get started on the prilosec.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like everyone should abandon the bac ship. Bac has changed my life for the better. I don't intend stop it. But because there's so little known about bac therapy, there's no one to guide us through the ups & downs. We have to figure it out ourselves. Many are having SEs. Some are not. Those of us that do are trying address them but can't until we have an accurate diagnosis so we can take the right med (not an allergy med) to address it. I don't want speculation. I want a solid answer.

I am anticipating these are temporary SEs and will resolve on their own as I continue lowering my dose. (Reached indifference at 250 & so far tapered down to 200) I've heard many say this is the case for them.

As far as the weight gain. Some have it & some don't. Again, I'm looking for an accurate reason why this is happening. My test strips tell me glucose is not leaving my blood. Why? I don't know. Here's my theory: Bac is a muscle relaxant. Muscles need glucose for energy. The bac relaxes our muscles. Maybe my muscles are not using gluclose because they don't need it. One thing I'll tell you for sure. I DON'T exercise. Never needed to. Just started this morning with a 45 min, hard bike ride. If I can maintain consistency perhaps my theory will be proved true. I'll let you know.

                    Hi Hopeful,

Some strange things going on, but you seem to be handling them. I also got a cough at the start of baclofen, lasted about 2 or 3 weeks if I remember correctly. Went away of its own accord eventually.

I know that those people who do exercise on baclofen report great results, so maybe this is something to look into?

When I said this, I wasn't directing it to anyone on this forum. It's directed to the medical profession. I'm frustrated with them and their unwillingness to explore better ways to address addiction. They are so fricken SLOW while they want to hang tight to their decades old rehab treatment methods. I found baclofen therapy through a series of lucky circumstances. After my brother died from hitting his head after drinking a liter of vodka, my own drinking problem got really bad. I won't go into the gory details but it was enough to put me into a frenzied search for something more effective than what I would get from a traditional rehab program. I found a book called "A Cure for Alcoholism." It was about the Sinclair Method. TSM uses naltrexone under the premise to take it one hour before drinking. I started TSM in Sept 2010. Getting on naltrexone took quite a bit of ingenuity. When I went to my primary care provider she'd never heard of the medication and thought I was talking about antabuse. She was ready to write me a prescription for the antabuse but when I asked for the nal she said she couldn't because I might go into DTs & die. She referred me to an alcohol screening counselor who said they didn't prescribe medication just assessed for a problem & referred you to a treatment program. Next stop, I called the University of MN substance abuse program. Uof M has a great marketing line about themselves: "Driven to Discover." But apparently they are not driven to discover more effective ways to treat alcohol addiction. They told me they didn't use treatment methods beyond their current protocol which is to my understanding traditional rehab. After all this I did more online research & figured out you can order nal online from foreign pharmacies. Which I did. Initially, with TSM I noticed a reduction in my drinking but it wasn't the "cure" described in the book. When I passed out from drinking too much during dinner I told Dr. Willenbring (shrink) about it. Oh by the way, I found him online on the TSM forum. Someone in Washington DC had him as their doc & said he was moving back to MN. So I got in as his patient and didn't have to order my nal from a foreign pharmacy anymore. When I told Dr. W the nal wasn't as effective as I'd hoped he suggested a number of medications including baclofen. Bac sounded like it had fewer side effects so went with this and started it Feb 7, 2011.

So, again sorry if I seemed like I was lashing out at you.

Oy. I felt so badly about my comments. Thing is, and you wouldn't know this, I was really reacting to another thing that came up on another thread. (I was also particularly grumpy yesterday. Still am. What're you going to do, right? Sorry, though.)

I'm really glad you've got the ability to get answers, Hopeful. That's so huge! I can join you in the frustration factor about the sad state of affairs for treatment of our people. I'm very sorry about your brother. So many tragedies related directly to the treatment travesty.

Also, it's really good to know about that SE. Several people have experienced stuff that sounds an awful lot like that... I imagine it will really help the people that come behind to know to look out for it.

That drives me crazy. My husband had NO side effects, with the exception of taking bac erratically in the very beginning of his titration, which contributed to some major anxiety.

A couple of nights of weird dreams. That's IT. I'm still incredulous. And though relieved, it's a little annoying! To add insult to injury he has a bunch of the really good ones. Increased focus and clarity, at the moment. I suspect he's a little euphoric... Color me jealous, for sure. And again, happy for him!

I'm with you in looking for solutions, though. Hang in.

                              Hi Hopeful!

:welcome: I too started bac on February 7th. :H. It appears we have a few things in common. My brother is still alive, but may not live a long life if he doesn't do something about his drinking soon. My mom died of alcoholism related causes. I have a whole slew of other family members who have died (and very young, an uncle at 37), due to alcohol. All smart, good people. Traditional treatment methods didn't work. At least not long term. It is so hard and sad to see the ones we love, and in my case, it is seen in generation after generation, get taken down by this disease. I hit my switch at 200mg in mid April. I had tons of SE's. I didn't have the severe GERD you mention, but so many others, that I came down and mighty fast from my switch dose. I was no longer indifferent to alcohol. I'm now doing a very slow climb back up (10mg a week, sometimes less), trying to again find indifference. I'm doing it slowly in hopes of avoiding some of the worst SEs that I experienced before. It seems to be working...kind of. It depends on the day. :H

I also gained weight. I gained about a pound a week, to total about 12 lbs. I WAS not eating 3500 extra kcals a week. I will admit I
stopped working out due to the side effects. I then started exercising, and bac does wonderful things for endurance and the avoidance of
muscle fatigue. I also went crazy on my diet (which I know you already are). The low carb lifestyle works well for me too. Something completely changed as far as my metabolism because I've now lost a solid 25lbs since May. I'm not far from the weight I was in high school!

So stay hopeful, Hopeful. I know I'm not the only one who has gained on bac, only to turn around and get better, and more fit, than they hoped for in adulthood.
