    Katie's Naltrexone update

    Great update, Katie!! :goodjob:

I am watching you very closely because Baclofen is simply not an option for me.

Nal is my next try but I have to get to a doctor to prescribe it.

    Keep on truckin' girl!!

    Love,

      Katie's Naltrexone update

Uk those extinction bursts are a bit worriesome when they happen. I always get a little concerned that TSM isn't working and then reassured that things are going along accordingly when I drop back down.

Cindi, I will keep posting updates on my progress good or bad. So far it's been an easy trip, the hardest part is having the patience to see it through and not give up too soon.

      Stay happy

        Katie's Naltrexone update

        Hello friends!

        TSM week 37

I haven't posted in a while, been busy livin' life. Mid Nov I attemped to do 50 days AF after being on TSM for 29 weeks.
It wasn't a total success, but a success nonetheless. I am convinced that if one continues to have high levels of drinking after 30 weeks or so on TSM, chances are they are drinking out of habit. That pathway is well worn into our system and it's tough to reroute it.
Although I did drink on occasion, always following TSM protocol, during those 50 days, I concentrated on getting myself out of the "rut" by breaking habitual patterns that are deeply ingrained after doing the same thing over and over for 30 years.

The hardest challenge was my after work/ shopping/ housework drink, my down time, my "treat" for getting the job done. When I was ready to stop and have my ritual drink...which would always result in many more than just "one"....I made myself do something else that I liked instead of drinking. I tried to find something I could substitute as a reward that was relaxing, creating a good meal, making myself a large cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream, even sitting down and reading the newspaper helped. Making those small changes, changed my course. TSM rewired my brain, I just needed to put in a little effort to break the habit.

I haven't had a drink since New Years Eve and I don't care if I ever have one. I don't think about it and I don't miss it.

Medication and alcohol free, can't beat it.

        TSM works. Period.

        xo KS

          Katie's Naltrexone update

Wow, Katie! Great job at seeing the main point. Habit has to be changed along with any of the meds. I think people can drink through just about anything - maybe antabuse (SP?) excepted. I tried TSM and had a good honeymoon period but kept drinking for months while taking Nal. I never worked hard enough to get rid of the habit of drinking every night though so the habit stayed. Eventually I stopped taking the Nal, and kept the drinking!! Congrats to you.
Ask yourselves, would you rather be a non drinker with an occasional desire to drink or a drinker with a constant desire to stop doing it?

            Hi MWOLady, thanks

Yes, one can drink through the meds. I sure did at times, but I kept my focus on what I wanted as an end result.
I loathe myself as an alcoholic, in so many ways it has wrecked my life, my true self. I want that person back and I want her to start living life again, not holing herself up at home night after night drinking herself into oblivion.

TSM is working, I could not be more grateful.

              Katie's Naltrexone update

It's very nice to read this, Katie. I have been considering the idea that drinking out of routine is a bigger part of the problem, once you get to a certain stage in the treatment. bleep said something similar, talking about Baclofen.

                Katie's Naltrexone update

                Hi Nutshell

Medication is a wonderful tool in aiding recovery. I can't say enough about it. 7 months of taking Naltrexone and somehow I am "free". Amazing stuff.

I believe if the "habit" is deeply woven into a persons brain, such as decades of repeated pattern, one must put some effort into changing that habit. Really, I can't believe how easy the transition has been once I made the decision to try to change direction.

For me, saying "I'm not going to drink tonight" didn't seem to work. I needed to find something else to replace the "first pour", something I could look forward to when it was time to relax. I rarely treat myself to sugary things like hot chocolate, so coming home and making a big cup of hot chocolate with a big gob of whipping cream and settling in to read the newspaper was all the diversion I needed.

I honestly have no inclination to drink...it's the oddest feeling.

Haha MWOlady....Thankfully I can limit my hot chocolate intake to "one". I'm starting to substitute it for herbal tea to avoid calorie overload.
I do post on the TSM forum, once I get some serious AF time in I will add myself to the list. I am cautiously optimistic about staying alcohol free...it seems too easy and I am all too familiar with falling off the AF wagon. Time will tell.

                              Thanks jessie
