Advice on doseage of Bac please!!!!!

Hola!

After 6 weeks of sun, sand and plenty of sangria .... am having at least a 5 week trip on the wagon ..... will be the longest time since I can remember (even during pregnancies ) but have come back from Espania with over the counter Bac supplies - 25mg's. From doing research on various sites on the Internet it would seem that a high dose right from the start??? Is this right???

I'd really appreciate any help from anybody who can give it along with your experiences (good and bad!)

Hi Photogirl and Welcome!
The most popular starting dose for bac is 5mg x 3 times per day. Now you have 25mg tablets so some how you need to try splitting the pill. I would try that dose for about 3-5 days and if all is well, add about 10mg to the day. Others will chime in with their thoughts as well but you are making a life change for the better here!

Not sure I understand this. Is it your intention to beat your alcoholism for good or are you attempting to use bac merely to assist with a short period of abstention?

Hi Murphyx - I'm wanting to challenge myself to an AF month and then hopefully this will then help me moderate. If I tell myself "right, that's it, not another drop will pass my lips" then, I'm afraid, my personality is such that I'll think "what the hell, I'll have a drink ....... and another, and another ....". The most important thing for me, now, is that actually I have wanted to make a change in my habit and if I set myself a realistic goal of getting through September until my birthday, in the infamous words of ODAT, then I think I will get there. After that - who knows but there's not point in setting myself unrealistic goals because I know I won't achieve them and, failure, is something nobody needs when they're trying their hardest is it?

OK PGirl, I get it. A couple of things.

Bac won?t necessarily help you at low doses. You may get lucky and feel a much decreased craving for booze from the first pill (it happened to Redthread I think) but you may have to wait until you?ve titrated up to over 300mg per day before you get any sort of positive response.

Dosages: I would start on 2 x 5mg (or as close as you can get by splitting the 25mg pills). Next day go to 3x5mg. After 3 more days go to a total of 25mg (split as evenly and often as you can) for a week. Then add 20 mg per week (or 25 in your case). I know it sounds slow, but it?s the best way to get to the goal without massive side effects. The side effects can really put some people off but if you go slow, they should be hardly noticeable imo.

Also, I know you've decided to do it this way, but I would strongly argue against starting off with abstinence. I don't think it's a good time to put extra pressure on yourself when you've already decided to go through what is quite likely to be a very stressful time already.

I believe you are correct - trying to tell yourself "Never" is usually more than the AL brain can handle! 1 month is the perfect goal! You can always re assess after 30 days. So you took 25mg today - maybe if you dont notice any bad SEs, you could continue with 25mg a day? I wouldnt go higher though for about 4-5 days and then maybe split the pill in half and do 37.5 for a few more days. Just dont Rush to get to a high dose - that is usually a bad idea in terms of SEs. Keep us up to date and we are pulling for you!

Thanks so much you guys! That's really helped me. Took 1x25mg yesterday as you know and then, whilst I didn't have any "cravings" as such, because I didn't want to get any - I then split a 25mg in half so in total took 37.5 mg yesterday. SE's were actually not too bad .... bit "spacey" but didn't have a great deal to do as it was first day back from hols so could cope with them. This morning I've taken the other half of the 25mg so that's been 12.5mg so far and with it being a TFI Friday day I'm going to be nervous about having major cravings so will allow myself another 12.5mg later in the day if need be.

Anyway onwards and upwards and here's to an AF TFI Friday!

I may be contradicting Murph a little - no disrespect, Murph is a Champ and a valuable resource for Bac'ers but lots have hit a switch at a low dose (under 100mg) so please dont feel like you are inevitably going to have to shoot for 300 - just take it day by day, you will know when it happens!
Also (sorry Murph), I disagree about the abstinance thing. If you can do it - great. If you cant, it's not the end of the world but IMO - the switch may come quicker if you are not drinking. But again, as Murph said - it's not a deal breaker. 37.5mg is pretty aggressive starting out - please dont rush it. baby steps!

LOL thanks for the props, Gotta Stop. Sorry I've not seen you around before and I note you've only just joined the forum, so where exactly did you get your information from? Very few people will achieve indifference below 100mg, I can think of only 2 or 3. I think maybe you're getting your terminology confused, some people will find a reduction in cravings on LDB but they'll most certainly have to go higher than 100 to achieve a more complete indifference. Yes they may have to go over 300 but most will get there between 100-300. Don't stop reading the boards, there's a lot of information here about how to use baclofen successfully.

PGirl, slow and steady. Keep an even pace, split the doses as much as possible and don't go up one day and then down to a lower number the next. How much were the pills in Spain btw? Go on, make me jealous:H. How much supply did you bring back? You don't want to run out once you get going on baclofen, that can be dangerous.

I recieved my information from these boards and being on bac myself. Was on here a couple of years ago and I guess if you dont use it, you lose it - I tried to log in and was told my user name was invalid. Anyway, I hit became indifferent at 100mg per day and I have seen others here do it as well - point being - it's not impossible. I am sure there are those that do not want to spend the next 5 years wading through all the threads and posts on here to find what users see as "how to use baclofen succesfully" LOL too many people think that their experience is the right way, when at the end of the day - it is your body that will dictate successful usage (IMO). I am merely offering support and suggestions.

Hi guys and thank you!!!!! 1st AF TFI Friday since I can remember!!! Feeling good and have done 1 x 12.5 this morning and then as I was approaching TFI Friday witching hour I had a 25mg one - so same dose as yesterday. Will do the same tomorrow and then kick it up a stage on Sunday. That would work well as we are at the races then so will stop me quaffing Champagne ..... darling!!!!!!!!!!
