A Prescription Muscle Relaxer May Be The Wonder Cure For Alcoholism - Worldcrunch - All News is Global

The unexamined life is not worth living

    Yay! and grrrr.

I didn't know there was a study in France this year! Cool.

What a knucklehead this guy is:
Dr. Michel Craplet, a psychiatrist and expert in alcohol addition, say the drug has a psychological downside as well. He describes alcoholics who self medicate with Baclofen ?extremely lonely.?
?They lived for a while with what they thought was a miracle drug: alcohol,? he says. ?Today they think that another miracle drug, Baclofen, will save them from their illness. One illusion replaces another.?

Being lonely is just as dangerous, apparently, as being drunk all the time. Who knew?

I'm still living in that illusory world where a medication did actually save me from my illness. Glad there's no one around to pinch me. My friends won't be here for an hour. I'll ask them to help out. Oh, wait. I forgot. I'm lonely. Almost as lonely as when I couldn't get off of my couch, couldn't answer the phone after 7pm, and couldn't stand too close to another human being because I was scared they would smell the booze on me. At noon.

    Asshole.

omg. This is the guy's bio from Wiki:
Michel Craplet is French psychiatrist, an expert in alcohol related problems, their treatment and prevention. He is senior medical advisor of French Association Nationale de Pr?vention en Alcoologie et Addictologie (ANPAA).
Michel Craplet has been Chairman of European Alcohol Policy Alliance (Eurocare) since its creation in 1990, served as advisor to WHO's mission in Moldavia, and member of the expert group ?Alcohol and Health? of the European Union. [1]

Ne, I too was wondering about the French trial. So this IS a second trial then, right? That is good news.

Any word on the other trial? It hasn't started quite yet, right?

            Dear all,

Like in the Netherlands, I have indeed triggered a trial in France. We will use up to 300mg/d and include more than 200 patients.

            Best wishes,
            Dr Ameisen

              Baclofen News Article

PS I am pleased to announce that I am of course continuing to help Dr L. at his request for each of his difficult cases but that also that my treatment protocol is now receiving a lot of attention in the US and that the number of physicians using it keeps growing exponentially.
From 2009 on, I have been invited to lecture on my discovery in many universities such as Harvard in the US, Zurich and Berlin in Europe and each lecture led to more and more physicians who attended prescribing and spreading the word.

In addition, the media is conveying the information in a major way. In France, in the past weeks alone, the three leading TV channels have devoted prime time (evening news) to the fact that physicians using my protocol report results that they had could have imagined before. Same with the radio and nearly all the newspapers and magazine have written articles about my book, my work and the successes. More than fifty articles have been devoted to it in July and August alone. Academia and the media claim that it "is the first time that a book for the general public ("The end of my addiction") has changed the course of a disease."

As you probably know "Science" which, along with "Nature" is the most prestigious scientific international journal has devoted a full page in its May 6, 2011 issue (both on paper and online) with the focus on my book and its repercussions worldwide (article by Martin Enserink).

I have not posted on MWO in 18 months and will continue to not post. This forum is "your" battlefield.

Mine is to prescribe, to teach colleagues, to publish in medical journals and to answer the media about my current work.

I just thought that this update might help you keep your spirit high and continue your struggle.

              Best to all,
              Dr. Ameisen

                    Hello Dr. Ameisen,

Your book and your discovery have saved my life. Baclofen has and continues to cure me and it is because of you and this website that I discovered it.

These studies and your selfless work bring solid hope to the alcoholic community.

Thank you with all that I am.
Indifference is in your future with Baclofen. It works!

My frustration with Baclofen, which is shared by Dr. Oliver Ameisen, is that because Baclofen is an off patent medication there is no profit motive for drug companies to support clinical trials that would demonstrate its efficacy in treating addiction.

Yes, thank you Dr. Ameisen, for all you have done, for all you are doing, and for contributing periodically to this forum. You and baclofen saved my life. The only thing I think of to do in return is to inform and help as many people - addicts and professionals who treat addicts - as possible. It's such a tiny drop in the bucket of misunderstanding the horrors of addiction, but it is what I can do . . . now.

Okay, Ne . . . let's take a closer look at the somewhat disturbing French trial. Pure irony is one of life's pure delights. I mean, what could you really expect from Dr. Craplet?

                        Thanks for that Dr A.

The article is pay per view only, but there doesn't appear to be anything new in it. Here's the summary:

Anonymous Alcoholic Bankrolls Trial of Controversial Therapy

Increasing numbers of alcoholics have been demanding that their doctors give them prescriptions for baclofen, a decades-old muscle relaxant that mimics the action of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain, to treat their addiction. But hard evidence for its efficacy has been lacking; a handful of trials have generated conflicting evidence. Now an anonymous Dutch donor has given the University of Amsterdam a half-million euros to conduct a rigorous placebo-controlled study of the drug.

I have Kaiser and I went to their drug and alcohol treatment center and asked for Baclofen. They would not prescribe it because it works on the same receptors as alcohol. It was crazy. So I guess they would rather have me drink close to a 5th a night than prescribe it to me. I am still working on them. It has saved my life. I feel cured! How can that be? I have trouble sleeping but I take Trazadone and it really works for me. I have been able to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner and have no desire to have anything else to drink. My doctor who deals in addiction (had to go outside insurance to get the meds) told me that her patients have me to thank. She would have never know about it had I not pushed her on the drug. I have been on the drug now since July 10th and only now do I feel like I am at a good dose and the only side effect I deal with is lack of sleep and some constipation.

                          Thank you Dr. Ameisen
