    baclofen may cause internal bleeding

Hi, I started baclofen for the second time. My first experience was bad due to titrating too quickly (for me). I restarted about a month ago and titrated slowly up to 80mg without much trouble with blood pressure. However, I did notice I had started to have blood and mucus in my stools. This increased as my bac dose went up. I recalled that I had bleeding first time round too but it went away when I stopped baclofen. Again, it is reducing as I titrate off it again!I then looked into this and there is evidence it can cause bleeding in those with history of peptic ulcer disease. Early onset alcoholics should read and take heed as we type B's are known to have gastric problems due to drinking from an early age I.e. heavily before age 21.

I'm due an endoscopy tomorrow - ouch! - so I will have a better idea if my hunch is right.
I'm considering starting on pregabalin as I am definitely coming off baclofen which is a shame.

I have not attached a Link for references etc as using my smartphone and don't know how to copy and paste on it yet! Just Google 'baclofen and blood in stools'.

I'm not sure which of your threads I should reply to. Do you think galoot, when you post something such as "baclofen may cause internal bleeding" that you should already have your reference ready? It's a pretty effing serious post. You still haven't posted it hours later. These kind of posts cause distress to some of us. It turns out baclofen could cause false positive guiac or occult blood, in the test that measures this. This means, it does NOT cause internal bleeding, but the tests used to measure if one is internally bleeding, may falsely appear positive. If you have something that says differently, then I'd love to see it. I will be surprised. And even saying baclofen causes internal bleeding when you have underlying peptic ulcer disease is wrong in my opinion. A lot of things cause bleeding when you have peptic ulcer disease. How in the heck could you be sure it was bac?

      Good luck with your endoscopy.

OK Redhead, I should have been more clear....it may aggravate bleeding. Please note I did say 'may' anyhow before you start your ranting. I did say I am having an endoscopy and will know more afterwards. Anyway I also said I have a smartphone I'm trying to get the hang of....

As I said the bleeding has occurred only whenever I tried baclofen (twice) and increased and decreased again according to hether I was titrating up or down. What oes that tell you???

Next time you go to the bathroom check your stool....well you should check regularly if you are an alcoholic.

So much for passing on my experience lol.

        Check this out redhead....

Thanks for the Wise Geek article. The listed side effects aren't referenced, and neither the author or the editor are doctors but I'm willing to bet my life it must bet an authoritative report because there's a photograph of a doctor next to it.

Based on that, I'm flushing my baclofen down the crapper along with my potentially bloody stools.

Thanks for the heads up galoot. Have you seen my thread "Baclofen MAY cause aliens to burst out of your stomach

haha.... I have been for my colonoscopy (it felt like I was being experimented on by aliens! Probes up the backside are usually whathey get up to.) and the increased bowel movements may have contributed. Bac makes me go!

I do appologise about the header as it reads worse than what was intended. I guess when you have sh*t loads of blood coming out of you you tend not to think too straight.

I've been on here a while and usually try post relevant info on my experiences - good and bad.

Sorry about the probs Galoot. Having colonoscopy sounds crappy, oops I mean it sounds awful, a real bummer, err I mean. You know what I mean.

Seriously though, I hope you get it sorted. Not nice and very worrying for you I'm sure.
