    hello all

Hello all, I want to start by saying that I do not believe that I am an alcoholic, but I do occasionally binge drink (usually once per week)and I have a history of drug abuse to cope with severe anxiety. I also fear that eventually I will become an alcoholic.

I have had issues with anxiety, social phobia, mild depression and insomnia for as long as I can remember. In high school I experimented heavily with ecstacy and methanphetimines. I believe my previous drug abuse was a result of coping with anxiety issues, as is the occasional binge drinking. Thankfully I am now 29 years old and have not touched ecstacy or amphetimines for about 9 years, and I hope to keep it that way forever even though the urges have come and gone. I have in recent years gone on opiod binges as well.

For some reason unknown to me my anxiety and social phobia spun out of control about 1 1/2 years ago, and for the first time I sought medical treatment for these issues as I could not bear the incredible panic attacks I was having over and over again. Since seeking medical treatment I have been put on and tryed many different medications to help resolve these issues. First of all I tried all of the commonly know OTC meds to help with sleep and anxiety such as diphenhydramine, doxylimine, and various herbs and extracts like valarien, gaba, 5-htp, melatonin etc. of course none of these helped at all. So I was then put on paxil, and this medication made my insomnia and anxiety so much worse that I did not sleep for days, and nearly lost my job. I was then put on amitriptyline and buspar, which I believe helped the depression but not anxiety or insomnia. So next I was given various prescription strength antihistimes, and none of them helped, so my doc gave me propanolol which does help a bit with controling the physical symptoms of anxiety but does not last long or help enough. I was also put on ambien for sleep, I took ambien for about a week before I had side effects so bad I couldn't take it anymore, so I was switched to lunesta and this did the trick for good sleep, however I have recently switched yet again to sonata because the lunesta costs me $100 a month even with insurance and I can't afford it, so far the sonata is working OK.

Untill a couple of weeks ago when I discovered phenibut, I had been basically living with severe anxiety on a daily basis, and I have nearly lost my job and my wife and child several times because of it. Oh the magic of phenibut, it actually takes away my anxiety! I feel like a "normal" person when I take about 1000-1500 mg. Now I should say that there is a possibility that benzodiazapines could help with my anxiety, but I have never asked for them, and never been offered them because of my history of drug abuse this is not really an option. But never before I found phenibut did I feel such relief from crippling anxiety, even my non-benzo sleep pills have not worked as good as phenibut. So I believe that I have finally found the cure to my anxiety, but wait, then I find out I will become tolerant to the phenibut and it WILL stop working, this was devistating. So I went on a mission to study what phenibut was and how it worked, thats how I dicovered what a gaba B agonist was, about baclofen and this forum.

I know that many people on here also suffer from severe anxiety with thier alcoholism, and that baclofen has been a life changing medication for them. I have also found that there are a small number of studies done that prove the efficacy of baclofen for anxiety. I hope to find a way to get a script for baclofen, because I believe it will save my job, marriage and my life like it has done for many of you. This forum has inspired me and given me hope that my future may not be as bleek as I had once thought, and I thank all of you troopers for that.

I hope that somebody would be kind enough to give me the contact email address and information for dr. levin in chicago so that I may try to pursue getting a script from him. I live in new york, and have not found any doctors around here that would be willing to try this medication. I asked my doctor on my last visit to let me try gabapentin and he scoffed at that, so I will not even bother asking him about baclofen.

Thank you to anyone who reads this post and may be able to offer me help, god bless.

    hello all

welcome boosted! so glad you found us!

ok, so, first: there are a few threads here that specifically address anxiety, and i think they're still on the first few pages. check those out! if you post on one, it will immediately jump to the top of the list and you'll probably soon get some great responses. but read through a bit first, as i bet that way many of your questions will be answered.

now i gotta go take a quick re-read... (that's why i always do quick reply, folks. so's i can scroll up and know what i'm responding to. w regular reply, i don't think i can do that.)

    i'll pm you dr L's #'s. he's truly great.

and it's also great that you are getting a grip on this BEFORE you are an alcoholic! props to you, young man! and that you're doing it so young. there's SO MUCH hope for you! slippery pete is a beloved wonderful presence around here. he's in seattle and about your age, and he just hit the switch on baclofen and his life is transforming before our eyes. check him out.

i, too, live in new york. i was in loisada and brooklyn for 11 of my formative adult years, then moved 100 mi north to a beautiful spot in ulster cty. give thanks. where are you (if you care to share)?

stick around. you won't regret it. and WELCOME!

      hello all

      Rudy, you're too kind :l

Boosted, excellent research in finding GABA-B and baclofen's role in anxiety. I too tried many meds for anxiety, along with exercise and breath control, and whatever else was suggested to me that would help. Nothing has come even close to what baclofen has done for me for my anxiety. The fog has cleared, and it's incredible.

BTW, I'm guessing you have a B16A2? Hopefully Electron Blue Pearl?

My first car was a 95 GSR with a B18C1, with the usual add-ons like cams and headers and suspension. That was the funnest car ever...I can only imagine it with a turbo

        hello all

Rudy, thank you for your kind words, and I would much appreciate doc L's email addy, I just hope he will take well to someone seeking medication mainly for anxiety rather than alcoholism.

Slippery, everything I found seems to confirm that gaba-b is THE best anxiolytic available for so many people, I have confirmed this with my use of phenibut. I want my life back and I hope this could be "my way out" so to speak from a life of misery with anxiety. Oh and nice to see another enthusiest. I have owned a total of 5 DOHC vtec hondas, and they have all been fun. 3 different crx's all with B16a motors, and the last one being turbocharged, and yes it was stupid fast. I have also had 2 Integra gsr's with B18c. However these days I'm driving the family mobiles, a 2001 honda accord and a 2008 honda accord, but some day I do plan to build another turbo honda that is insanely fast because they are so much fun and really the hobby is like therapy for me!

Hi Boosted. We are all different, but my son and I have recurrent generalized anxiety issues and less than wonderful success medicating with alcohol. My son has been on bac since June with terrific results. Dr L is his doctor and he certainly understands the significance of anxiety in my son's case. Please do call him. FWIW, everyone on this board has to dig back through thousands of his posts to find Dr L's telephone number, but if you want it faster just google his name and baclofen and "312" (the area code) you'll find it pretty quickly.

I have been collecting stories published about anxiety and baclofen on the following thread:

and encourage you to post yours if you decide to try bac.

            hello all

Shit. I've got a b18a1 inside of a '91 integra and I didn't think it was anything special. The kids who had it before me put some headers on it so it sounds like a bumble bee. That thing is way testier than any girl I've ever had. She's got the normal weekly upkeep (I have to show her how much I love her. I have to listen to make sure her heart is beating regularly and her breathing is steady every time I'm inside of her. I basically have to diagnose what's wrong with her and make sweet, sweet love to her every two weeks (and it's different every time) in order to keep her on the road.

I keep my entire tool set in the trunk and when we end up on the side of the road (which is often) I have to spend an hour of quality time and either fix her right there or call triple A so we can go back home and spend a couple of days together (it's about 50/50).

Oh and the $$$...my goodness, don't get me started! :upset:

edit: but it does have somewhere around 300k on it and the engine is still strong...

No disrespect to your girl, but she's... um... EASY! After you know how to turn her on (she can be a bit tricky with figuring out which buttons to push!), she will let anyone take her for a ride! I barely had to caress her clutch and she was all GO!
Of course, you're the only one that can keep her happy long term.
