    Anyone taken Lamictal/lamotrigine for depression?

To any reading this - these meds are not to be ordered and taken without consult of a psychiatrist and preferably a pharmacology specialist/physician.

I am a drug rep and have sold SSRI's but I am also a bipolar 2 recovering alcoholic who went to a dual diagnosis treatment center and they got me straightened out. Not every one has to go to a treatment center but I saw some people go on and off all of these meds while I was at treatment because they had various reactions and interactions.

I developed the rare rash that can kill you on Lamictal within the first dose - fortunately I was there with 24 hour care and it did not get bad at all. The rash is a major concern in the first week and should be monitored closely if any concerns arise. However, Lamictal has great antidepressant qualities and is the bipolar/mood stabilizer of choice for those with depressive bipolar. Supposed to have few side effects.

A proper diagnosis is important. Taking antidepressants alone when you are bipolar can trigger mania and/or uncontrollable urges in alcoholics. This is how I suffered for about the last 3-4 years. Plus the Zoloft could not combat the anxiety because the alcoholism had screwed up my neurotransmitters and unless I was very drunk - I had some level of anxiety. The Zoloft was spinning the alcoholism beyond my control.

I went to psychiatrists who were not trained in dual diagnosis and they had no clue I had freaking bipolar. I am a classic case of bipolar 2 with depression being the main issue. Have had it since childhood.

Best of luck but do see a specialist and keep searching until you find one who can help. If you really have a chemical imbalance it will be VERY difficult to maintain sobriety through no fault of your own. But if you find the right medicine "cocktail" you will be AMAZED at how much easier it is and how normal you can feel.

I had not felt normal in years. I take zoloft and depakote. I do have some fatigue with the depakote but compared to the other issues I had it is minimal.

I should also add that many people suffer from depression and are very effectively treated with antidepressants with little influence by alcohol. Meaning drinking on the antidepressants will not send them into the oblivion I was in.

And too, some people have temporary depression and/or anxiety strictly from the drinking and can be helped short term with these types of meds.

Some people will do VERY WELL with supplements and natural therapies. I saw this at the treatment center, as well. This was after proper diagnosis though. Believe me, if I could go the natural route I would....

What MyFreeWill said, although don't want to hijack this thread into being about bipolar (as opposed to depression). I twice experienced the ill effects of being originally diagnosed with depression and being given an antidepressant, only to have things really take off for the worse from there. What does become relevant is the elusiveness of a proper diagnosis with respect to anything psychiatric. I wasn't diagnosed as bipolar until I was 45 and after seeing six therapists / psychiatrists. And now I have a non-MD therapist who is questioning the bipolar diagnosis and wondering whether I'm really bipolar! He thinks it the principal issues are anxiety compounded by alcohol dependence.

Oh, the humanity! Of course, it's all only relevant to the degree that one gets into the proper course of pharmacological treatment. I've also become convinced that talk therapy is essential -- there is evidence that talk therapy can, and when effective, does literally change your brain.

MyFreeWill -- maybe we should take this up through PMs, but are you now on Baclofen for the alcohol dependence? (I hate the words 'alcoholism' and 'alcoholic' -- because those words are ones that can be construed as defining us, as opposed to behaviors that are a manifestation of a part of ourselves.)

I take only the Depakote and Zoloft. I have not needed any anti-craving meds. I took naltrexone for the first three days in rehab and nothing since.

However, I was prescribed Campral to keep on hand if needed. I know everyone is different and my psych is very pro anti-craving meds to keep you sober and not regressing backwards.

I have been taking Lamotrigine OD 200mg for only 1 month and I notice a huge difference. I am finding joy in the things that I couldn't for years. My patience is so much better and the outbursts of anger have stopped already. I only hope that I don't start experiencing the side effects that I have heard about.
