    Xanax Question

So yesterday I went to my doctor who knows my whole history and has always been so supportive. I felt like I needed a little reinforcement?even after all this time, sometimes the beast still rears his butt-ugly head and brings on mild anxiety. She prescribed me a very low dose of Xanax (0.5mg). So long story short, I took one pill at around 10am and everything was fine. Around 6pm I took 2 pills for a total of 1mg (she said it was ok to take 2 in the evenings). I fell asleep on the couch by 7pm and when I woke at 8:30 I was SOOO groggy I couldn?t even shower and get ready for bed. I had to just fall into bed (at least I was already in my jammies?lol). Just wondering if anyone else had such an extreme reaction to such a (relatively) low dose? I used to be on Ativan and could take 1.5mg and still function throughout the day. Is Xanax that much stronger? I thought they were similar. Now I?m worried about introducing a new drug into my system, and I?m thinking I should just ride out my occasional anxiety. Any advice?

    Xanax Question

xanax works much faster in the system than ativan. I think its just an adjustment period. If you need it take it!

      Xanax Question

Hi K9! I have been prescribed 0.25 mg many times in my life, and rarely ever took more than one at a time (unless I wanted to have a "good time"), so I would disagree that you are on a low dose. Sometimes, I even cracked a 0.25 in half and that was enough to get me back to sleep in the middle of the night. I've never taken ativan, so I can't compare. Best of luck to you...anxiety is terrible. I am taking zoloft now, and doing talk therapy. I really think the zoloft is helping...not so sure about the therapy.

        Xanax Question

Yeah .5mg is not that low of a dose... I mean it's not high but if you're not used to it than sure, you will certainly react to it like that. The thing about Benzo's is that tolerance builds rapidly and in my opinion should only be used on an as needed basis. Unfortunately I've been on 1-1.5mg xanax per day for the last several months. The anxiolytic effects have seemed to taper off some so I've switched to Valium to taper off completely. In the future I will ONLY use on an as needed basis as it's a bitch to taper off this stuff.

          Xanax Question

1 mg of xanax will knock you on your a$$. That's equivalent to 20 mgs of valium. :H

Cut your pills in half. Or maybe ask for a less potent benzo.

            Xanax Question

Thanks for the info everyone. I only started taking them yesterday. It's just so weird to me that I am perfectly fine on 0.5 mg (I took it during the day, AT work!) but if I take 1mg I'm knocked on my ass (as Lo0p says...lol).

My doctor refused to give me Valium because she says it stays in your body too long. So I just accepted the Xanax since last time I was on Ativan I didn't find it that helpful.

              Xanax Question

This is true about valium and that's what makes it so much more useful for tapering off of benzo's after long term use.

I read your first post incorrectly and didn't realize that you'd taken 1mg at once... for someone not used to it, like Lo0p said... it's gonna floor you :H
