Disulfiram( antabuse) detection in blood and urine tests

    Hi Guys,

I would need to know if a doctor can determine that a patient used Antabuse from the Blood or Urine tests?

I did a search over the net but the information is not relevant. What I have found is the following :

transaminase tests (10 to 14 days) are suggested to detect any hepatic dysfunction that may be associated with disulfiram therapy.

or that the Pharmaco kinetics of disulfiram have not beed elucidated because there are no sensitive and specific methods of determining disulfiram and its metabolites. Disulfiram is a very difficult drug to understand, but we have described a method of measuring blood levels clinically. After oral disulfiram therapy levels of 2-8 mg'l were obtained and immediately after implantation levels of 1-3 mg/l were recorded. A final metabolite of disulfiram is carbon disulphide . This gas was measured in the breath of disulfiram treated patients and levels of 0.1-0.4 mg/m3 were obtained.

Any other information is very welcomed.

    Thank you in Advance,

    I.

Disulfiram( antabuse) detection in blood and urine tests

    Hello,

Unless blood tests are done specifically to find Antabuse, it will not be detected. Typically, drug/alcohol testing only tests for specific markers.

I find it hard to imagine anyone testing for Antabuse.

Although, without knowing why you ask the question, I can't really answer.

If someone is specifically looking for Antabuse, I am sure it could be detected.

Disulfiram( antabuse) detection in blood and urine tests

      Hi Cindi,

Thank you for your reply. I had some Antabuse intake for the last month and I did some blood and urine tests and I do not want for my wife to find out from the doctor about it.

      Regards,

      Ionut.

Isn't your doctor supposed to have a confidentiality commitment to you, the patient? Remind him/her of that and specifically state you want this private without your wife knowing.

          Hi,

The tests are done in public hospital so not in a private and the Antabus was purchased from the goldpharma.com. This being said , please let me know in more detail if this can be seen on a blood or urine test.

I did read in a website that the disulfiram will not appear even on drug tests.
