I started baclofen in Oct., '09. Poster child, here. Quit drinking all day, every day, the first day I took baclofen.
I rent an apartment over my garage to a man I met in AA several years ago. After a relapse, I tried, but could not make that program work for me again, and received the incredible gift of learning about baclofen on MWO, and have been free, free, free . . . . LIBERATED from the compulsion to drink.
He, on the other hand, dropped out of the AA program started drinking again, and lived the "textbook" version of returning to the depths of alcoholism. I gave him "the book" over a year ago. No interest. Then . . . drinking spiraled (as it always does, without intervention), he lost his job, he tried to trade me work for rent, which was a disaster - and showed me just how far down he was. This time, he had no option BUT to take the bacofen I offered him.
Day 1 was tough. I suggested 10/10/10, not realizing that he hadn't eaten in 3 days. It was, however, his first day of not drinking, because he felt so badly. We backed it down to 5/5/5. He then, with ease, had 3 days AF. We cried together. He's had a few beers along the way, but we are titrating up at his pace, and he tells me that he feels "normal" for the first time in years
We're now about 10 days into the protocol. I never told him not to drink, but when I found out that he had immediate relief from craving I told him sternly not to "overdrink" the results that he was getting.
As I've watched this forum for the past 2 years, the most difficult stories seem to come from people who continue to drink excessively, or "overdrink" the option to NOT drink with baclofen. I may be imagining this . . . but whether so or no, my tenant has had IMMEDIATE RELIEF from drinking all day, to not drinking at all, or drinking 1-2 beers and leaving it at that. Miracle?????? Miracle, if you're a "real" alcoholic.
And on another note, the D.O. that I introduced to baclofen and got to write my original prescription just sent me the 2nd client that she wants me to monitor and support through the baclofen protocol. She realizes that she doesn't really know how to tell people to titrate and manage side effects.
I am so utterly grateful for Dr. Ameisen, baclofen, MWO, and all you baclofentists who keep the story unfolding. Make another notch on your "lives saved with baclofen" belt!!
