LSD for alcoholism?
I've been goofing off on Google for alcoholism treatments and came up with several studies and articles claiming LSD is effective in treating alcoholism. Has anybody tried this and can you comment in it's effectiveness?

I think LSD is not unlike ibogaine, you might want to also research that. However, LSD can have some lifelong damaging effects if I recall correctly? You should research that too. And if you try it, make sure you have a buddy with you. I've never done it but if I did, I would do it with someone experienced.

I am not a doctor.
First, LSD is illegal and no one should be recommending using it as you could be accused of counselling someone to take it which is an offence. It does permanently affect the brain.
LSD was originally developed by Abram Hoffer at Sandoz laboratories and was used for alcoholism but it had hallucinogenic SEs so it never caught on. I heard a story about it on the radio. They found someone who agreed to take it and he had a bad trip but did permanently stop drinking. My experience with the drug is nil. Those people I have met in my life who have used it all seemed odd even though they were all very bright and highly educated. None of them had alcohol problems and all of them drank without addiction. I would not take it because the impression I got from these people is that it permanently changed their brains...but they seemed happy enough, one has gone on to be a QC.
Hoffer went on to develop Hydergine, an ergot used in treatment of Werner-Korsikoff syndrome and was a pioneer in the field of Nootropics, medicines which treat the brain as opposed to Psychotropics, which treat the psyche (wherever and whatever that is).BACLOFENISTA

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

Bruun, I'm not interested in trying it, I've just become interested in different things people have tried.
Bill Wilson was and avid supporter even!
Congrats on 14 days Balboa and like you say I be you are feeling pretty good.
Funny thing is reputable studies show LSD is not addictive and has no long term ill effects. They also state that tolerance is built up very quickly and the subjects quickly lost interest in continuing to take it.
Again, I'm not advocating it's use- I'm just googling things that have been tried as I was bored last night and after finishing all my housework, there was nothing on tele and my family are away for a few days.Diggin' being alive

Very interesting. People I knew who took it did not become addicted and were very high achievers.BACLOFENISTA

I've never heard of LSD on its own being used to treat alcoholism. Bill Wilson was interested in it for people who were already sober in whom he wanted to induce "spiritual experiences". Seems a little misguided now, but dude was trying, right? Reminds me of doctors in the 80's and 90's giving people Ecstasy so they could better discuss their feelings.
I'm not advocating LSD by any means, but I and all my now successful and still sane friends did plenty in our rebellious youths with no permanent damage."Yet someday this will have an end
All choices made or choice resigned,
And in your face the literal eye
Trace little of your history,
Nor ever piece the tale entire
Of villages that had to burn
And playgrounds of the will destroyed
Before you could be safe from time
And gather in your brow and air
The stillness of antiquity."

Here is the story of LSD treatment for alcoholism:
LSD - The Problem-Solving Psychedelic
This is a very dangerous topic because possession of it is a criminal offence.
Come to think of it though, I don't know if these people are happy or whether they have become alcoholics or what! A lot of high achievers are deeply unhappy.BACLOFENISTA

I keep coming back to this because I find it worrying. I am not a doctor or a scientist.
The worry I have is that people adopt this approach. I am not at all judgmental about drug use. The people I knew who openly admitted using LSD, and of course I am sure I know lots but they just did not talk about it, all seemed to me to be a bit altered in their perceptions and not what I would call normal. None of them seemed to me to have relationships or partners. I just did not like what I saw and it left me very uneasy about LSD as a recreational drug and, now, as a treatment. I felt that if I ever took it I would come out of it with an altered perception of life and I did not like the idea of becoming, effectively, a different person. The thought of taking LSD, to this day, scares me.BACLOFENISTA

I took a lot of LSD as a young adult. I don't think it had any long term effects but it is a drug that you need experience to handle well. Too much or a bad reaction while on it can have horrible consequences.
I can't get past the idea that the only method away from a dangerous drug (AL) is even more drugs. I have been prescribed more drugs in the last two years than I would have ever thought possible. To this day, however, I have not found that elusive doctors that is willing to prescribe LSD. if you find him, give me a shout.I refuse to be labelled or ashamed. Through my struggles I am achieving self awareness and clarity.

I've been reading one study from 1962 which has compares supposed success rates to such safe and effective treatmenst such as ECT (electro convulsive therapy, or electric shock treatment) and psychosurgical procedures (prefrontal lobotomy). Given a choice I think the LSD would win out.
These were all widely used treatments for all sorts of conditions.
I've also been reading Handbook for the Therapeutic Use of LSD-25 by some PHD guys. Fascinating stuff and it's available in pdf in the Erowid librairy if interested.
Tonight's research will be on ECT. I think I may be able to self administer that but the self-lobotomy may be a bit difficult.Diggin' being alive

Hi, Otter, I'm curious why it's such a dangerous subject to talk about just because possessing it is illegal. I know many people who took it who have relationships and partners and consider it the most profound positive experience of their life, "just saying".
