    Antebuse dosage

    Hi!!

I am about to embark on the antabuse journey (I cant wait!!) and have a couple of questions.

    - Does anyone know what the best dosage of antebuse is? or is it individual
    - is there a weaning on period, ie only take 10mg one day, than 20mg the next etc ?
    - are there any side effects in just taking antebuse?

I am so looking forward to being AF free... I posted about me on the newbies board if you want to read my ramblings Jo

Hi MumofTwo. I have not read about anyone titrating up on antabuse. Some people here are having great success with it, and their thread is here:

    https://www.mywayout.org/community/f2...e-4-54587.html

On the last page of that thread are suggestions for how to take it.

Your enthusiasm is great. Good luck with the antabuse.

      Antebuse dosage

Hi and welcome. I have been taking Antabuse for some time now, and am finding it effective. I am just not game to risk drinking on top of it. I started off with 1/4 of a pill, which was 50 mg, only because it was my first day of not drinking and I was nervous about alcohol still being in my system. I went to the local club and used their breathalyser a few times, until it said my blood alcohol level was zero. That's when I took the 1/4 pill. Next day I went up to a full tablet, 200 mg. Since then I have taken it every day, but sometimes only 50 or 100 mg, as I know it takes days (sometimes a week or two) to get the drug out of your system, so I know I would not risk drinking even if only taking a small amount. A couple of years ago I stayed sober using just 50 mg every day!

Many people recommend taking the full 200 mg daily, as a form of extra commitment to sobriety, and I don't think there are many frequent side effects. I have also seen it suggested that Antabuse should not be taken until 48 or even 72 hours after last drinking. That would definitely make sure alcohol was well out of your system, but I am not sure there needs to be such a long break, since a person could easily be tempted to drink again while waiting all that time. I did not notice any problems taking 50 mg once my blood alcohol level was 0, the day after drinking.
