    Baclofen Usage - I overindulged...

    Hi there!

I am very excited to have found this site and I know it is going to be amazing to have a safe forum to share what is going on with me and to hear other peoples stories.

I have always been a social drinker and really up until 3 years ago it was always social. Anyway, it just got progressively harder and harder to be at work and to function in the mornings after I had drank 9 cans of beer. I don't feel sorry for myself, it is what it is.

Anyway, I read Dr. Arnesian's article in the Guardian about 19 months and it was scary how similar all the symptom's he described were to mine. I am super outgoing but have always been nervous and hypersensitive in social situations. My doctor was sympathetic but reluctant to diagnose. About a month ago I got him to prescribe 12 a week and it is amazingly incredible how effective it is..

I did though do something really stupid two nights and I can't figure out why....I took about 25 pills in the space of 4 hours or so. Maybe I thought it would help me sleep or get high. Anyway, was a self inflicted nightmare....I woke up and had no idea what was going. I then puked for 20 mins. Which I am sure was good to get it out of me.

I will read more posts on baclofen and getting to the correct dosage but if any of you have advice on that I wrote I would appreciate it. I know what I did was really stupid and I am lucky I did didn't hurt myself other than the thumping headache I had today.

Hi Dele, maybe you were looking for a high, or extra relaxation? Baclofen seems to take a while to have an effect and it can be very subtle, which has precipitated taking too much for me, in the past. Please be careful!

Thanks for your responses. I have no idea what I was thinking....I hope I learned my lesson about respecting a prescription drug.

          Hi Rangiatea!

I think your response was a bit mean and missed the point a little bit. I was so sad to have done what I did....baclofen made me feel better than I had in years. I was looking to share that story to ask for help and support as to what would have made me do that.

I have always felt that my drinking was attached to a self destruct button....that was the ultimate example of that.

I am still finding it hard to find a correct dosage that doesn't make me pass out in the afternoon. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

          xo

            Thank You

            Hi Rangiatea,

Thanks for your response. I need to pay more attention to the advice on here. I can tell you that the night I took the 25 baclofen was a total nightmare....I was staying at a work colleague's house, peed the bed, I woke up staggering around, I was lucky someone didn't call the police....

I am taking 12 baclofen a day and it seems to be working great. Thanks again.

              Hi Delecrosse:

Welcome to MWO, and I give you my full support regarding the use of baclofen as A way out. What you've come across is a veritable treasure trove of information and experience about baclofen, its effects, its side-effects, the many different protocols that different people have used to find freedom from the craving to drink alcohol dangerously, and against our will.

I have been taking baclofen, and free from alcoholic drinking, since Oct. '09. At that time, I was desperate. Desperate enough to read everything that had been posted on MWO about baclofen, buy Dr. Ameisen's book and read it in one day, and formulate my plan, based on what I had learned, to liberate myself from AL with baclofen.

It worked. AND it required all of my resources, which are considerable, to utilize baclofen safely and effectively.

I am not critical, but I am baffled by your posts. Have you read Dr. Ameisen's book? Do you and/or you and your Dr. have a protocol for titrating your dosage up in order to find the amount of baclofen that relieves you from the desire to drink? Bluntly put . . . do you know what you are doing and what your goal is?

I'm sincerely interested to know these things. Baclofen works, but it is not a "silver bullet" to be treated lightly. As you've already experienced, there can be massive and bad repercussions from using it inappropriately. There are TONS of knowledge and experience in threads of this part of the forum. If I had NOT read them, both before I started taking baclofen, and as I've continued my journey, I could be in a very dark place, indeed. I accidentally over-dosed myself after 2 years of well-maintained use. It was a mindless mistake. If I had not been reading EVERYTHING posted by others using baclofen for all this time, I might have made things much, much worse.

So, in a nutshell . . . hooray for you for tackling a cruel and baffling disease! But realize this - we are very much pushing the envelop of medical knowledge and the understanding of addiction. To continue to develop a path utilizing baclofen as a way out of addiction, it is of the utmost importance to be as fully informed as possible; and to approach baclofen with respect and gratitude.

So very many generations have passed with only the options described in AA for those of us who are true alcoholics . . . hospitals, institutions, and death. That's what I've seen happen in my own family, and continue to see it happen all around. You have come across a miracle. Please, use it wisely. And keep us posted.

                Hi RedThread12!

I can imagine why you were baffled by my two posts...I didn't write very much and they were probably quite contradictory.

I think it would be helpful for me to write in more detail about how I got here but unfortunately I don't have time right now! I will do it tomorrow with a nice cup of tea. I haven't read Dr. Ameisen's but I have read numerous articles about the treatment and about the good doctor himself. I read a long article about Dr Amesien in the Guardian about 3 years ago and it was shocking how similar his relationship to alcohol was to mine. The self loathing of being in business meetings knowing that I had drank 12 beers the night before....being hardly able to think but getting through it. I am taking 10 baclofen a day and it's working tremendously but there are still days when I think about drinking but there are other days when I don't think about it at all....it doesn't even cross my mind. Anyway, I need to plan what I am doing better and I know that My Way Out will provide the support and information to do it. Anyway, I am going to write in more detail tomorrow....thank you for your note. Cheers,

im not telleing you to do that, that would be irresponsable , im just telling you that is safe at high dose, nobady was died from baclofen en 40 years even even a girl that try to commited suicide at 3 grams at once and wasnt succesfull

never go up 300, but stay at the dose you need and target your cravings, feel your body
nobady can tell you the dose you need every case is differents but the average is 145 in the clinical trials in France
Do not do any of the above... ever.
